It was a beautiful spring day. The Earth was finally awakening from her winter sleep. New life was everywhere. The sky was clear and blue. The air smelled sweet. The sun was kissing the world with its warmth.
I was driving to pick my son up from the sheltered workshop. On my drive I saw the flowers opening in people’s yards. The fields were full of yellow dandelions (蒲公英) with some already turning into little white balls of seeds. The trees were starting to awaken too. The flowers on them were white, purple, and pink. The songs of the birds were in the air as well. I was feeling the love from the creation all around me. I longed to be a part of it and share my love as well.
I pulled into the driveway of the sheltered workshop and parked my car. As I got out, I saw a lost little caterpillar (毛虫) crawling the wrong way towards the sidewalk. He was just about to go under my tire (轮胎) when I reached down and picked him up. I held him gently in my hand and walked over to the grassy hillside on the other side of the parking lot. I sat him down and said, “You will never become a butterfly if you get run over, my friend. Please stay in the grass.” Then I walked off with a smile on my face and a happiness filling my heart.
A friend once wrote me and asked what he could do to make a difference in this world. I wrote him back and said, “Everything!” Everything we do makes a difference in this world. Everything we do can help all the creation in the world. Every act of kindness, every shared smile, every moment of love makes a difference. Even saving a single butterfly is priceless.

Nowadays, more and more people are moving to big, noisy cities from small villages. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.
In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a residential area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.
In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the USA, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.
But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.
8. Why do people move to live in cities or towns?
A. Because they would like to live a more comfortable life there.
B. Because they mainly want to find a job there.
C. Because they like noisy life better than peaceful life.
D. Because they are sure of having a better life there.
9. Which of the following statement is NOT true about the business district?
A. Big companies usually have their main offices in the business district.
B. Nearly every major city has its own business district.
C. A business district usually lies in the city center downtown.
D. The people working in the business district in America only need to travel a short way to work.
10. In the USA, many people ________.
A. work in the center of a big city but live in the suburbs of the city
B work in the suburbs of a big city and live there
C. work in the center of a big city and live there
D. work in the center of a big city but live in rural areas
11. We can infer that this movement from rural to urban areas ________.
A. has now stopped already B. will surely continue in the future
C. has been going on for more than 2,000 years D. may not continue in the future
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. D

【10题详解】

A famous springboard driver was defeated by his competitor in the finals of a world championship, offering congratulations to the winner and waving a tearful goodbye to the audience.
It is common in the athletic world. Sportsmen spend the best part of their lives on hard training and competitions. When it becomes evident that they are on the decline they still make great efforts to give their best so as to bring a satisfactory end to their career.
Chances to compete for the championship are few and far between. Life is short. Still shorter is the time for an athlete trying to win games. An athletic contestant really feels that there are so few opportunities and time flies. He treasures every minute, makes full use of it and tries to grasp any chance coming his way. He gets as much as he gives, winning honors not only for himself but also for his country.
To participate and to win——that is the Olympic spirit. It finds expression in the weak daring to challenge the strong, and the strong searching forever better performance. Ever better—the ideal always makes a sportsman forward. He will do everything he can for it, never relax, never give up. It is said that none of the competitors can avoid being defeated—even the best is bound to be defeated by someone still stronger. This is the rule of sports—thousands of losers set off one winner who in turn will eventually be replaced by someone on the honor list. However, he is always trying to do the best he can. When the time comes and he knows he can’t, he will step down happily to give place to the younger winner, aware contentedly of the fact that he has done his best for the “ever better” records of the Olympic Games. He will say proudly that he has not lived his youth in vain.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain a phenomenon.
B. To describe a competition.
C. To lead in the topic of this passage.
D. To express worries about sportsmen.
13. According to the passage, what kind of ideal pushes an athlete forward?
A. He wants to win people’s respect.
B. He wants to win honor for his nation.
C. He wants to make greater achievements than ever.
D. He wants to earn more and more money and fame.
14. What can be learnt from the rule of sports?
A. Whatever difficulties you have met, never give up.
B. Even the strongest athlete will be defeated one day.
C. You can’t live in the sports field without any effort or progress.
D. You are the winner if you are brave enough to challenge the strong.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Sportsmen’s spirit. B. Sportsmen’s life.
C. Sportsmen’s honor. D. Sportsmen’s pride.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. A

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf by accident. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued (用胶水粘贴) the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted (擦拭) the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, Ben said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. The cat ran around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, Ben found a note from his mother in his room, asking him io go to the study (书房) at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. Seeing her son push the door open and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him a chocolate.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reword for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now with a lot of chocolates in hand, Ben’s bad attitude disappeared.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Hearing this, Ben’s face turned red, and he lowered his head in shame. He knew his mother had seen through his lie. Then his mother took out another chocolate and said, “This one is for your quick repair work on the vase. You did a good job in trying to fix it.” Ben’s eyes brightened a little. His mother continued, “But, Ben, honesty is the most important thing. If you tell the truth, I’ll give you the last chocolate as a real reward.”
Now with a lot of chocolates in hand, Ben’s bad attitude disappeared. He took a deep breath and said, “Mum, I’m sorry. I broke the vase while playing basketball. I was afraid of being punished, so I lied.” His mother smiled warmly and gave him the last chocolate. She hugged Ben and said, “I’m glad you told the truth. Remember, honesty is always the best policy.” From then on, Ben learned the value of honesty and never lied again.

4. What can we infer about the author?
A. He preferred winter to spring.
B. He saw people planting flowers in the yards.
C. He went to the workshop together with his son.
D. He appreciated new life and desired to share his love.
5. What happened to the caterpillar?
A. It went the wrong way and was nearly injured by a car.
B. It was discovered by the author in the grass.
C. It was taken away by the author to his car.
D. It would soon become a butterfly.
6. Which word can best describe the author?
A. Caring. B. Calm. C. Confident. D. Indifferent.
7. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Explain his views on nature.
B. Give some advice to his friend.
C. Show his opinion on making a difference.
D. Stress the importance of saving a caterpillar.
