After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.
That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher”. I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.
There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet — no outdoor equipment for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace (火炉) down in the basement. Looking after the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down.
What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!
In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.
I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an effect on the world that will last long after I am gone.
4. Why did the writer feel her first day as a teacher frightening?
A There were so many students in the class. B. The situations were quite different.
C. There was no outdoor equipment. D. The students were curious about her.
5. What do we know about the school?
A. It was badly equipped. B. The playground was large.
C. It was once damaged by a fire. D. The students were of similar age.
6. What was a headache for the writer?
A. A Dutch family hated her.
B. The students preferred farm work.
C. The education officer offered little help.
D. Some parents didn’t care about their children’s education.
7. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?
A. They cared about each other. B. They had an effect on the world.
C. They laughed away bad times. D. They did well in almost every subject.

Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游) has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased ten times at a minimum. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit (两位数的) growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up to 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters.
Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As preventive measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing,” said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underestimated, lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
8. What do the statistics in paragraph 2 tell us?
A The popularity of travel agency in China.
B. The high income of hotels during holidays.
C. The contributions of tourism to the economy.
D. The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.
9. What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism?
A. The impact of COVID-19.
B. Holidaymakers’ changing needs for travel.
C. The lower cost of heading to less-traveled places.
D. The lack of innovative improvements in famous attractions.
10. What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism?
A. It will drop with the recovery of economy.
B. It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.
C. It is beneficial to spread local culture to tourists.
D. It blocks the development of some popular resorts.
11. What is Jiang Han’s advice on developing the tourism market?
A. Upgrading the supporting facilities in tourist areas.
B. Improving the management rules of tourist attractions further.
C. Exploring the potential and features of lesser-known attractions.
D Promoting the local characteristics of China through online media.

A recent study found walking 10,000 steps a day lowered the risk for dementia (痴呆) by 50%; the risk decreased by 25% with as few as 3,800 steps a day. However, if walking happened at a quick pace of 112 steps a minute for 30 minutes, it maximized risk reduction, leading to a 62% reduction in dementia risk. The 30 minutes of fast-paced walking didn’t have to be finished all at once either — it could be spread out over the day.
The new study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, followed 78,500 people between the ages of 40 and 79 from England, Scotland and Wales who wore wrist step counters for 24 hours a day over a course of seven days.
After counting each person’s total number of steps each day researchers placed them into two groups: Fewer than 40 steps per minute — which is more of an amble, like when you’re walking from room to room...and more than 40 steps per minute, or so-called “purposeful” walking. A third group was created for peak performer — those who took the most steps per minute within 30 minutes over the course of a day.
About seven years later, researchers compared that data to medical records and found people who took the most steps per minute--in this case, about 80 steps per minute — showed the biggest reduction in risk for cancer, heart disease and early death from any cause. There was a 62% reduction for dementia, an 80% decline for cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and death, and about a 20% drop in risk for cancer.
“This may be related with specific pathways by which physical activity is helpful,” said Pozo Cruz, one of the researchers. “It pushes the body in general: can generate more muscle, a bigger heart and a better fitness, all of which are known protective factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer, and other health issues too.”
12. Who is least likely to develop dementia according to the study?
A. Bob who walks 3,360 steps in 30 minutes. B. Tom who walks 10,000 steps a day.
C. Chris who walks 78,500 steps a week. D. John who walks 3,800 steps a day.
13. What does the underlined word “amble” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Slow walk. B. Rush. C. Jog. D. Quick pace.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The reasons for dementia. B. The purpose of walking.
C. The research way. D. The research results.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The best way to prevent cancer B. Quick walking can be dangerous
C. Walking cut the risk of dementia D. Quick walking VS slow walking
