At the start of my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me to write my name. After I put it down, he said, plainly: “Now I will teach you how to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an uneasy relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese but they didn’t speak Mandarin. Unfamiliar with Chinese characters, they used fortune tellers to decide my name based on the ideal number of strokes (笔画) for each character, which was calculated for the best fortune. Chinese names can be truly poetic. Not mine. Embarrassingly, the characters for my Chinese name mean, roughly, “old,” “barley” and “warm.” My personal and cultural histories were messy knots.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I embraced critical analysis and creative expression. It felt like a way to abandon the strict formalities that defined my early years in Singapore’s high-pressure education system, and with it, perhaps, parts of my identity. Suddenly, I felt the need to present myself in a way that Americans would accept. I put on an American accent and set aside my Chinese name. Ultimately, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate (复制) the old masters’ techniques, thereby enhancing your own. Every week, my teacher would evaluate my writing. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Your challenge is in producing a bold stroke.” For years, I had prided myself on developing an image of integration and confidence despite deep insecurities, but my writing betrayed me.
I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. That first lesson came with the terrific promise that what had been shameful in myself could be made beautiful—and that I could be the one to do that work. I know now that what calligraphy teaches me is not the value of replication but the possibility that I could know myself more fully.
4.What criterion guided the selection of the author’s Chinese name?
A.Poetic sound patterns. B.Ideal symbolic images.
C.Favorable stroke counts. D.Positive literal meanings.
5.Why did the author adopt an American accent?
A.To break with tradition. B.To fit into the community.
C.To achieve academic success. D.To facilitate language learning.
6.What have we learned about the author’s experience with calligraphy?
A.It revealed her inner self. B.It improved her public image.
C.It presented no challenge to her. D.It enhanced her replication skills.
7.What has the author learned from calligraphy?
A.Fortune favors the bold. B.Embrace who you truly are.
C.Our roots define our identity. D.Planning is good, but doing is better.

Understanding a simple-looking English sentence such as “I read this article yesterday” actually requires some complicated conceptual computation: a subject (“T”) performed an action (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). But the human brain routinely does this work nearly at once based on the language’s grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain can accommodate fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.
For a recent study in PLOS Biology, the researchers observed variations in Dutch-speaking participants’ brain waves while they listened to a Dutch-language audiobook. To visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (指标) quantifying how many new “predictions” the brain makes of words that could come next in a sentence. This framework was then tested against three different parsing (语法分析的) strategies, or linguistic models that illustrate how the brain builds information over time.
Previous English-based studies with a similar setup concluded in favor of a model where listeners “wait and see” how each phrase in a sentence will end before interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a highly predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head preemptively before it was complete. (A third model, in which listeners wait to hear all of the phrases in a sentence before interpreting any part of it, is seldom used in either language.)
In Dutch language structure, verbs come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, while in Korean, the subject is usually left out and in Arabic verbs often come first. So flexibility is vital in processing different languages simply because they have different properties.
The findings support the need for scientists to include more diversity when crafting linguistic models. “This is going to help us capture how the brain is understanding the structured meaning of language, and the social application of language,” Martin says. “There’s so much yet to be understood in the brain.”
8.Why does the author cite the example in paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a grammar rule. B.To analyze an English sentence.
C.To bring in a new research finding. D.To stress the complexity of human brain.
9.What does the underlined word “preemptively” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.By accident. B.In advance. C.On time. D.By mistake.
10.Which sentence can match the Dutch language structure?
A.Universe the about documentary saw. B.Saw I a documentary about the universe.
C.I saw a documentary about the universe. D.I a documentary about the universe saw.
11.What does Martin try to stress in the last paragraph?
A.The challenges of brain researches. B.The application of the present findings.
C.The purposes of different linguistic models. D.The necessity to diversify subjects in studies.

Does it often feel as if the world is getting stupider? Data released by the OECD suggests that a fifth of adults do no better in maths and reading than a primary school child. In maths, average scores have risen in a few places over the past ten years, but fallen in almost as many. In literacy (读写能力), a lot more countries have seen scores decline than advance, despite the fact that adults hold more and higher educational qualifications than ever before.
Demographic change offers some explanation — new immigrants often struggle with a new language while the native-born have ageing brains. Basic numeracy (计算能力) and literacy are oddly unfashionable compared with fashionable “soft skills”, like generative AI: Overstating the importance of times-tables (乘法表) seems even more boring when talking robots promise to do all the hard work.
Yet a century of technological development has not cut demand for people who are good with numbers or words. Adults who do badly in the OECD’s tests earn much less than those who top them. They are also in poorer health, less satisfied with their life, less trusting of others and more likely to feel that they have no voice in politics.
What to do? Improving lessons for children is the surest way of creating more capable grownups. England’s adults have gradually improved their position in the OECD’s rankings, mostly because the youngest ones are scoring better than before. The second task is to modernize outdated systems for educating adults. These give dropouts a second chance; they also serve people who change careers and help immigrants integrate.
In too many places, a craze for universities has cut back on funding and focus on the kinds of lessons that people aged 18 and above could be offered. Degrees are becoming less meaningful: the OECD has found that even some university graduates post numeracy and literacy scores that might embarass a child. Meanwhile, those adults who want to return to class without beginning with long, expensive university courses often find good alternatives are lacking. Faster actions to fix all these problems seem like a bright idea.
12.What does the data released by the OECD show?
A.Adults may be less literate than before.
B.The majority of adults are well-educated.
C.Children can have easier access to education.
D.Adults find numeracy and literacy less useful.
13.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The effectiveness of education. B.The role of advanced technology.
C.The value of literacy and numeracy. D.The decline in political engagement.
14.Why is England mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To criticize its outdated education system.
B.To reveal the decrease in its dropout rate.
C.To demonstrate its high ranking in the OECD.
D.To highlight the significance of children’s education.
15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.University students are financially supported.
B.Children are embarrassingly worse in numeracy.
C.Degrees and abilities are not necessarily matched.
D.Expensive university courses have good alternatives.

Sometimes it seems that we can’t feel any joy in life. We all have such bad days. However, an inability to feel joy is not the norm and requires attention. 16 Luckily, there are steps we can take to generate joy.
17 Learning to recognize emotions that inhibit (抑制) our ability to access joy. This can help us gain access to our positive core emotions. For example, when we feel anxious, slow down, breathe and name the emotion. Once the body feels calm, we get curious about the emotion’s meaning. We may ask, “What is this emotion protecting me from?” and “If you move this emotion aside, what’s underneath?”
Pay someone a compliment (称赞). 18 So witnessing someone else’s happiness can make us smile, too. Complimenting a friend or co-worker can help. Saying “It’s nice to see you today” goes a long way. They may smile or show appreciation for your kind words. Witnessing their joy and happiness will lift your spirits.
Enjoy small moments of pleasure. Imagine you’re a joy detective and try to identify one positive interaction that you’ve experienced recently. 19 When you notice a positive feeling, try to stay with the moment. In the long run, it will lengthen our experience of positive emotions.
Smile, even when you don’t feel like it. When we’re feeling down, smiling may be the last thing on our mind. However, turning up the corners of your mouth can lower stress and boost your mood. It is a good way to watch a funny movie. Notice what happens when you laugh or smile. 20
A.Get out of a bad mood.
B.Watch out for joy blockers.
C.Emotions tend to spread rapidly among people.
D.This may remind you of a past pleasant experience.
E.Perhaps it was a warm conversation or dinner with a friend.
F.Chances are that you’ll experience a wave of joy, even for a moment.
G.Joylessness can affect our mental health, relationship and well-being.

Emma, a fifteen-year-old girl, lived with her grandma on the farm. Every day she would spend some time in the woods nearby. Some birds even came close to her, pecking at bread pieces from her hands and singing away.
One evening, a young man carrying a gun approached their farm house. Putting down the gun, he said, “I’ve lost my way. Could I have a night’s lodging here?” Emma’s warm-hearted grandma agreed.
Then, the man introduced himself as an ornithologist, who collected and studied birds. “Do you put them in a cage?” Emma asked. “No,” he shook his head, “I shoot them and get them preserved. I have over one hundred kinds of bird specimens (标本) in my studio.” Emma felt her heart trembling as she imagined so many birds being shot.
“Emma loves climbing trees, just like a naughty monkey! And she knows a lot about birds, too,” her grandmother said proudly. The man became excited. “I have followed a rare white heron in this direction for two days. Have you seen it, too?” he asked Emma. “The heron has soft white feathers and long slender legs. It probably has its nest at a tree-top,” he added. Emma’s heart gave a wild beat. She had frequently seen the strange bird flying back to its nest on the top of a tall tree near the other side of the woods! The young man then stared at Emma with the hope of the heron being one of Emma’s acquaintances. “I would give one hundred dollars to whoever shows me where the white heron is!” But Emma somehow shook her head. He then sighed, “They have never been seen here. Perhaps it was only migrating, or had been driven out of its own region by some fierce predator.”
That night, long after the moon came out and the young man had fallen asleep, Emma was broad awake. Her mind was alternately visited by the bird specimens and her long-awaited smart phone one hundred dollars could buy.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Dear Mr. David,
I’m Li Hua, a student at our school. Knowing that our library will be upgraded, I’d like to offer some feedback. Currently, the library lacks enough comfortable reading areas, and many seats are occupied during peak hours. Besides, the book selection is outdated, failing to meet our diverse needs. Some books are even damaged.
My suggestions are as follows. First, add more reading desks and cozy sofas. Second, update the book collection regularly and repair or replace damaged books. These improvements will surely make the library more appealing.
Thank you for your attention.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【参考范文】
Finally, Emma made up her mind. She tiptoed out of the house, her heart pounding. The moonlit woods seemed mysterious, but she knew the path well. She hurried toward the tall tree where the white heron nested, her mind clear with purpose. When she reached the tree, she climbed carefully, her hands gripping the rough bark. At the top, the heron slept peacefully, its white feathers glowing in the moonlight. Instead of shocking it, Emma whispered softly, “You’re safe with me.” She gently carried it down, and placed it in a small cage she had prepared earlier.
Before dawn, Emma returned to the farm house quietly, holding the cage covered with her jacket. She hid the bird in the barn, making sure it had food and water. After the man left for several days, Emma released the heron deep in the woods, watching as it soared into the sky. Though she could have used the money, her heart felt lighter knowing the bird was free. Her grandma, learning what had happened, hugged her tightly and said, “Some things are more precious than money.”

4.细节理解题。根据第二段“Unfamiliar with Chinese characters, they used fortune tellers to decide my name based on the ideal number of strokes (笔画) for each character, which was calculated for the best fortune.(由于不熟悉汉字,他们让算命先生根据每个汉字的理想笔画数来决定我的名字,这是为最好的运气而计算的)”可知,作者的中文名是父母基于笔画的数量,取吉祥福气之意。故选C。
5.细节理解题。根据第三段“Suddenly, I felt the need to present myself in a way that Americans would accept. I put on an American accent and set aside my Chinese name.(突然间,我觉得有必要以一种美国人能接受的方式来展示自己。我带上了美国口音,把我的中国名字放在一边)”可知,作者说美国口音,隐藏自己的中文名,是为了融入美国的社会。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据第四段“For years, I had prided myself on developing an image of integration and confidence despite deep insecurities, but my writing betrayed me.(多年来,我一直为自己塑造了一种融合和自信的形象而自豪,尽管内心充满了不安全感,但我的写作背叛了我)”和第五段“I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself.(我一直在学习书法,试图与我的文化根源接触,但我真正寻求的是回归自我)”可推知,作者在书法练习中,重新找到了自我,认识自我,重塑自我概念。故选A。
7.推理判断题。根据第五段“I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself.(我一直在学习书法,试图与我的文化根源接触,但我真正寻求的是回归自我)”可推知,作者本来是想通过书法练习找到自己的文化身份,却在这一过程中重新认识了自我,接纳了自我。故选B。

【答案】8.C 9.B 10.D 11.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了语言学家Andrea E. Martin团队的研究发现:人类大脑通过调整语法分析策略来适应不同语言的基本语法差异,并强调科学界需在语言模型中纳入更多语言多样性。
8.推理判断题。根据第一段“But the human brain routinely does this work nearly at once based on the language’s grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain can accommodate fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.(但语言学家Andrea E. Martin表示,人脑通常会根据语言的语法规则几乎立即完成这项工作。而且,Martin的团队现在发现,人脑能够通过调整处理每个句子的方式来适应不同语言之间根本性的语法差异)”可知,作者开篇举例是为了引出Martin团队的新研究发现,即大脑处理不同语言的灵活性。故选C。
9.词句猜测题。根据第三段“participants tended to finish each phrase in their head preemptively before it was complete(参与者倾向于在短语未完成时preemptively在脑中补全它)”可知,上文“But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a highly predictive model(但在Martin的研究中,说荷兰语的人强烈倾向于一个高度预测的模型)”说的是参与者需要再头脑中补全每一个句子,下文说的是在完成之前,可推理出此处说的是参与者倾向于在短语未完成时提前在脑中补全它,可推理出“preemptively”意为“提前地”。故选B。
10.推理判断题。根据第四段“In Dutch language structure, verbs come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, while in Korean, the subject is usually left out and in Arabic verbs often come first. So flexibility is vital in processing different languages simply because they have different properties.(在荷兰语的结构中,动词位于句子的末尾,而不是像英语那样紧跟在主语之后;而在韩语中,主语通常被省略;在阿拉伯语里,动词往往放在最前面。因此,在处理不同语言时,灵活性至关重要,因为它们具有不同的特性)”可知,荷兰语结构为“主语+宾语+动词”结构。选项D“I a documentary about the universe saw”为“主语I+宾语a documentary about the universe+动词saw”结构,符合荷兰语结构。故选D。
11.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The findings support the need for scientists to include more diversity when crafting linguistic models.(这些发现支持了科学家在构建语言模型时需要纳入更多多样性的必要性)”可知,这些发现支持了科学家在构建语言模型时需要纳入更多多样性的必要性,可推理出Martin强调研究中语言多样性的必要性,故选D。

【答案】12.A 13.C 14.D 15.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要探讨了全球范围内成年人数学和读写能力下降的现象,分析了这一现象背后的原因,并提出了相应的解决方案。
12.细节理解题。根据第一段中“In literacy (读写能力), a lot more countries have seen scores decline than advance, despite the fact that adults hold more and higher educational qualifications than ever before.(尽管成年人拥有的教育程度和学历比以往任何时候都更高,但在读写能力方面,有更多国家的(读写能力)得分出现了下降,而非上升。)”可知,成年人的读写能力可能不如以前,故选A。
13.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Yet a century of technological development has not cut demand for people who are good with numbers or words. Adults who do badly in the OECD’s tests earn much less than those who top them. They are also in poorer health, less satisfied with their life, less trusting of others and more likely to feel that they have no voice in politics.(然而,一个世纪的技术发展并未减少对擅长数字或文字处理的人才的需求。在经合组织的测试中表现不佳的成年人,其收入远低于那些成绩优异者。他们的健康状况也更差,对生活的满意度更低,对他人的信任度更低,而且更可能觉得自己在政治上没有发言权。)”可知,第三段主要讲述的是读写能力和计算能力的重要性,故选C。
14.推理判断题。根据第四段“Improving lessons for children is the surest way of creating more capable grownups. England’s adults have gradually improved their position in the OECD’s rankings, mostly because the youngest ones are scoring better than before.(改善儿童教育是培养更有能力的成年人的最可靠途径。英国成年人在经合组织(OECD)的排名中的地位已逐渐提升,这主要是因为最年轻一代(的测试)得分比以前更高了。)”可知,提到英国是为了强调儿童教育的重要性,故选D。
15.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Degrees are becoming less meaningful: the OECD has found that even some university graduates post numeracy and literacy scores that might embarass a child. Meanwhile, those adults who want to return to class without beginning with long, expensive university courses often find good alternatives are lacking.(学位的价值正在逐渐降低:经济合作与发展组织(OECD)发现,甚至一些大学毕业生的计算能力和读写能力得分都低得可能会让一个孩子感到尴尬。与此同时,那些想要重返课堂学习、但又不想从耗时长久且费用高昂的大学课程学起的成年人,往往发现缺乏合适的替代选择。)”可以推断出,学位和能力并不一定相匹配,故选C。

故填where。
38.考查动词语态。句意:后来它被北方移民引入南方。此处为谓语动词,根据语境以及时间状语later可知,动作发生在过去,且主语it(指代舞狮)与introduce之间为被动关系,所以用一般过去时的被动语态,且主语为第三人称单数,所以谓语动词为was introduced。故填was introduced。
39.考查代词。句意:广东醒狮在明朝(公元1368-1644年)发展成其现代形式。此处修饰名词form,应用形容词性物主代词its,意为“它的”。故填its。
40.考查冠词。句意:在中国传统中,人们视狮子为勇敢和力量的象征,它可以驱邪,保护人类和牲畜。symbol为可数名词单数,空前无限定词,结合句意,此处表示“一种象征”为泛指,且symbol是以辅音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词a。故填a。
41.考查副词。句意:舞狮主要侧重于醒狮的表演,非常注重抓痒、摇鬃毛和舔毛等动作。此处修饰动词focuses,应用副词作状语,main的副词为mainly,意为“主要地”。故填mainly。
42.考查介词。句意:舞狮主要侧重于醒狮的表演,非常注重抓痒、摇鬃毛和舔毛等动作。此处为固定搭配attach attention to,意为“注重”,所以用介词to。故填to。
此处为非谓语动词作后置定语,修饰名词time,构成the perfect time to do sth.结构,意为“做某事的最佳时机”,所以此处使用动词不定式形式。故填to share。

Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 Finally, Emma made up her mind.

C
