B “Your password has expired,” a message said on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn't seem like a big deal, unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, the whole password can't be fewer than eight characters. And I can't use any of the same passwords I've used in the past three months. Suddenly I was very angry. What didn't make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. Disbelief about what she had done to me was all I thought about every day. I remembered a tip I'd heard from my former boss. He'd said: “I'm going to use a password to change my life.” I couldn't focus on getting things done in my current mood. There were clear signs of what I needed to do to get control of my life again. My password became the sign. My password reminded me that I shouldn't let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it. I made my password Forgive@h3r. I had to type this several times a day. The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex - wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened and find a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt a slow healing begin to happen. By the time my server asked me to reset my password the following month, I felt free. One month later, my dear Exchange server asked me yet again to reset my password. I thought about the next thing that I had to get done. My password became Quit@smoking4ever. I quit smoking overnight. This password was a painful one to type during that month, but doing it helped me to yell at myself in my mind as I typed that statement. It motivated me to follow my monthly goal. One month later, my password became Save4trip@thailand. Guess where I went three months later: Thailand. Seeing how these reminders helped to achieve my goals kept me motivated and excited. While it's something difficult to come up with your next goal, keeping at it brings great results. 24. What does the word "expired" underlined in the 1st paragraph refer to? A. become due B. been renewed C. been mistaken D. changed 25. Which of the following passwords meets the author's company's requirements? A. buy@1ticket B. See@h3r C Course4$Saving D. Dream4future 26. What can be inferred about the author according to the text? A. He saved enough money to have 4 trips in Thailand. B. He started smoking to heal his broken heart. C. He finally recovered well from his divorce. D. He was always angry about his company's requirements for passwords. 27. What would be the best title of the text? A. Never to be a victim of others' faults B. To motivate yourself by setting your goals C. How to come up with a new password D. A new way of dealing with my depression C Have you ever wanted to share the taste of a delicious dish with a friend far away, only to find that words and pictures fall short of delivering the full experience? A new device called "e - Taste" can help. Developed by scientists at Ohio State University in the US, this device aims to improve digital experiences by adding "flavors" to them, reported Science Daily. Creating digital tastes is challenging. Taste is about "feeling" actual molecules (分子) that come out when teeth and saliva (唾液) break down food or drink, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The molecules "wake up" certain cells on the tongue and along the roof and back of the mouth. With different sensitivity, these cells respond to at least one of the five basic tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami (鲜味) by sending signals to the thalamus (丘脑). It then transmits the signals to other brain regions where specific tastes are identified. Since the full flavor is experienced only when these signals are put together, creating taste requires collecting all this information. The "e - Taste" device does this using a special sensor. Like an "electronic tongue", the sensor measures the levels of five chemicals in food or drink that contribute to the five basic tastes. Once gathered, the data is sent wirelessly to another part of the device. This part pushes up liquids through a gel layer that contains the five chemicals. By drinking the liquids, people can taste the food or drink no matter where they are. Real - world tests of "e - Taste" went well. It worked even when the device's two parts were placed in different cities thousands of kilometers apart. Volunteers identified foods like fish soup with almost 87 percent success, according to a statement by the Ohio State University. Looking ahead, scientists plan to "conquer" more taste sensations, like spiciness. They also want to study the device's effect on different people, given that taste is "greatly related to human emotion and memory", said scientist Li Jinghua in the university's statement. 28. What is the main purpose of the "e - Taste" device? A. To create new flavors in dishes. B. To identify different tastes of dishes. C. To describe tastes beyond words. D. To realize remote sharing of flavors. 29. What is the main focus of paragraph 2? A. The role of different parts of the mouth in tasting. B. The challenges of developing digital tastes. C. How the human body experiences tastes. D. How the five basic tastes interact with each other. 30. What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Gathering necessary data. B. Sending electrical signals. C. Experiencing the full flavor. D. Measuring the levels of tastes. 31. What can be inferred about the future plans of the scientists? A. Lowering its cost is their primary goal. B. Spiciness is their top research priority. C. They aim to stimulate a wider range of tastes. D. They will study the emotional impact of the device. D Making fabric from waste potato plants could offer a more sustainable alternative to pure cotton, as pressure grows on the fashion industry to reduce its environmental impact. Potatoes pose a headache for farmers. The tubers (块茎) are harvested and eaten, but the above - ground plant contains solanine, which is poisonous, so it can't be used for animal feed. Farmers usually remove this matter before potatoes are harvested. Now, a UK startup company, Fibe, wants to avoid this waste by extracting (提取) fibres from potato stems (茎) to make a sustainable fabric. In April, it introduced the world's first potato thread (线), a mixture of 75 per cent cotton and 25 per cent potato fibres. The approach began as a project by a group of design engineering students, including Gal - Shohet, at Imperial College London. Tasked with designing a sustainable business concept, the group investigated using waste plants to create a more sustainable alternative to cotton. The students chose potato plants because they are mass - produced all over the world, are rich in fibres and their leaves have no other practical use. They turned their idea into a business after graduating in 2022. Fibe primarily uses non - biological process to extract the fibres. "Once raw fibres are extracted, they are cleaned and graded to produce soft balls. The potato fibres are similar in quality to cotton," says Gal - Shohet. However, because the land is already being used to grow potatoes, potato fibres require 99.7 per cent less water and produce 82 per cent fewer carbon emissions (排放), as well as needing no additional land, according to Fibe's internal analysis. Muhammad Tausif at the University of Leeds, UK, who has worked with Fibe, says industry demand for sustainable fibres is growing, but the company will need to prove its potato fibres have the "length, fineness and strength" to compete with cotton. "For a fibre to be successful and to be made into a product, these are the key factors," he says. 32.What do the underlined words "this matter" in paragraph 2 refer to? A Pure cotton. B. The poisonous tuber. C Animal feed. D. The above - ground plant. 33. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4? A. Summarize the previous paragraphs. B. Add some background information. C. Provide some advice for the students. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion. 34. What does Fibe's internal analysis emphasize about using potato fibres? A. Its standard requirements. B. Its wide applications. C. Its technical barriers. D. Its environmental advantages. 35. What does Tausif expect of Fibc? A. It should demonstrate its fibres' competitive qualities. B. It should secure business partners as soon as possible. C. It should make a big difference to the fibre industry. D. It should launch appealing products into the market. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As humans, we're meant to be social creatures. In fact, being socially connected is key to our mental and emotional health.    36    This can cause us to cut ourselves off from others and gradually become lonely. Social situations can seem frightening, but the truth is never quite so black - and - white. People aren't thinking about you—at least not to the degree that you think.    37    Just like you're thinking about yourself, other people are thinking about themselves. They're not spending their free time judging you, so stop wasting time worrying about what others think of you.    38    When you're socially anxious, it can seem as though everyone else is fully confident. But that's not the case. There are still many shy people out there struggling with the same self - doubts as you are. The next person you speak to is just as likely to be worried about what you think of them! You don't have to be perfect to be liked. In fact, our imperfections can be pleasant.    39    If you can cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you'll likely find that others will, too. They may even like you better for it! It's okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; it's part of being human.    40    Your value doesn't come from being perfect. If you find self - forgiveness difficult, try to look at your own mistakes as you would those of a friend. Overcoming social fear requires practice. Don't expect to become socially comfortable without putting in the time. That said, you can start small. Take baby steps towards being more confident and social, and then build on those successes. A. So give yourself a break when you mess up. B. Many other people feel just as awkward and nervous as you do. C. The good news is that you can learn from them. D. People are much more confident than you think. E. Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others. F. Most people are caught up in their own lives. G. Yet many of us are shy and feel awkward around unfamiliar people. Francis Kéré is the first African to win the Pritzker Prize, known as the Nobel Prize of architecture. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do. The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.
