As I walked toward my kindergarten teacher's desk,I felt excited.Mrs Stuchio pulled out the little plastic
chair and told me to sit.I placed my workbook on the table and began."A pig can jig,"I recited."Excellent,"
she said."Go on."As I read the words and looked at the pigs,I felt strong,smart...happy.
I don't remember much else about that day in 1974 at the Hills School in Dix Hills, but when I realized
that sounding out letters on a page allowed me to read an entire story,I was attracted. When I was old enough
to read chapter books,I couldn't get enough of them,like Harriet the Spy,All-of-A-Kind Family,etc.Then I
graduated to Danielle Steel and Sidney Sheldon.Back then, the "young adult"type didn't exist;I went straight
from family breakfast scenes to love stories, like Evergreen by Belva Plain.
At junior high school,English became my favorite class.I have vivid memories of Mrs Ayers reading The
Cask of the Amontillado aloud as my eighth-grade classmates and I sat fascinated by her deep and emotional
voice. In following English classes,my teachers assigned demanding books such as The Stranger,A Tale of
Two Cities and complex research papers. For the first time,I felt book-related anxiety.
After getting my college degree in English and working at seventeen magazines, books called again:I left
to get my teaching certification. As a new English teacher in Manhattan,I stressed the importance of immersive
reading.Annotations ()I felt,broke the drive."Sustained silent reading",during which students spent
entire periods reading, was essential to my curriculum.
Today,as a librarian at Manhasset High School,I promote reading with enthusiasm. In a recent
ninth-grade class,I created a "reading workout".Students sampled books spread across tables and read with no
schedule.I'd never seen them more engaged. For now,I'll keep getting lost in reading and use my platform as a
librarian to share my passion.
24.What made the author first find reading attractive?

B.Critical reading.
C.Uninterrupted reading.
D.Relaxing reading.
27.How did the author motivate the ninth-grade class to read?
A.By setting a reading schedule.
B.By asking students to write reading notes.
C.By making students read aloud together.D.By supporting students in reading freely without schedule.

Researchers recently studied some newly discovered dark rocks from Mars and concluded that they were
likely laid down from the air, potentially as volcanic ash billions of years ago. However,no volcanoes have
been discovered at the site to date."There are no known volcanoes at this site, which means the ash probably
came from hundreds or maybe even thousands of kilometers away,"the study first author Emma Harris said in
a statement."It likely came from a really explosive volcano which launched ash high into the atmosphere and
the ash travelled this huge distance before settling at this site."
Researchers found there were strange light-coloured spots on the rocks, each surrounded by dark material
containing iron and phosphate ()"These spots are a big surprise,"said David Flannery at the
Queensland University of Technology."On Earth, these types of features on rocks are often associated with the
fossilized record of microbes (living in the subsurface."That is because the type of chemical reaction
that creates these sorts of spots on Earth rocks can also provide useful energy for microbes.
In the same area where the rocks are located, certain organic compounds that are often considered the
building blocks of life were also found. All of these together could be taken as a sign of bygone Martian
microbes, but it is far from a smoking gun."We should be cautiously excited and keep sensible,"said the
researchers.
To learn more about these rocks, the study authors mapped a region of 19,300 square miles using data
from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter,a NASA satellite. The dark rocks are theorized
to have once covered the whole site, but are now only found in smaller areas. The researchers propose that this
is because the ash was preserved in areas of lower altitude inside impact craters ()where it mixed with
groundwater."When the ash fell on these patches of water,it made them stickier and then more solid. The rest
of the ash which landed on the surrounding rocks may have just blown away and never preserved,"Harris said.
28.Why did Emma Harris mention "no known volcanoes at this site"?
A.To prove the site has always been inactive.
B.To make a guess about the source of ash.
C.To indicate the rocks are formed by impacts.D.To explain the reason for the special colour of the rocks.
29.Why were researchers surprised at the light-coloured spots?
A.They appeared in smaller regions than expected.B.They contained minerals previously unknown on Mars.
C.They challenged previous findings about Martian geography.
D.They might involve reactions often linked to microbial activity on Earth.
30.What does the underlined phrase "far from a smoking gun"in paragraph 3probably mean?
A.A direct cause.
B.Obvious misunderstanding.
C.Not strong evidence.
D.Not a problem.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Impact craters with traces of water on Mars
B.Martian ash:clues to ancient volcanic activity
C.Martian subsurface:proof of complex ecosystems
D.Rocks from Mars with possible signs of ancient life

Researchers at Columbia University have developed a new artificial intelligence(AD)method that can
accurately predict gene (activity in any human cell, essentially revealing the cell's inner mechanisms
)Detailed in the latest issue of Nature, this system has the potential to change how scientists study cancer,
genetic disorders,and other diseases.
"Predictive generalizable computational models allow to reveal biological processes in a fast and accurate
way. These methods can effectively conduct lots of computational experiments, boosting and guiding
traditional experimental approaches,"says Raul Rabadan, senior author of the new paper.
Traditional biological methods show how cells function or respond to changes, but they lack the ability to
predict these processes.Recent advances in AI and massive biological data collections are making this shift
possible. However, using AI to predict gene activity inside cells has been a greater challenge-until now.
Rabadan's team developed an AI model trained on gene expression data from over 1.3 million normal
human cells.Unlike earlier models trained on limited data, this system uses genome sequences(基因组序列)
and accessibility data to predict which genes are active in any cell. The process is similar to how language
models like MindLink,an AI chat tool, work:It learns patterns from data and applies them to new situations.
Testing showed the model could accurately predict gene activity in cell types it had not encountered, matching
experimental results closely.
The researchers applied the AI model to study pediatric leukemia,a childhood cancer caused by inherited
mutations ()The model predicted how these mutations disturb critical processes in cells,a finding
later confirmed through experiments. This understanding highlights the specific mechanisms causing the
disease. The AI model could also reveal unexplored regions of the genome, often linked to cancer. These
"dark"regions may play key roles in disease.
Already,Rabadan is working with researchers at Columbia and other universities, exploring different
cancers, from brain to blood cancers, learning the grammar of regulation in normal cells, and how cells change
in the process of cancer development.
32 What is a problem about traditional biological methods?
A.They are difficult to combine with AI.
B.They can't predict how cells work.
C.They are expensive in plenty of research.
D.They can't collect biological data effectively
33.Why does the author mention MindLink in paragraph 4?
A.To remove public doubts about AI chat tools.
B.To introduce the disadvantages of AI tools.
C.To explain the experimental results from Rabadan's team.
D.To clarify how the AI model functions
34.What does paragraph 5 mainly stress about the new AI model?
A.Its popularity.B.Its application value.
C.Its complexity.
D.Its design inspiration.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.New AI Model Exposes Secrets of Human Cells
B.Scientists Unlock the Secret of Blood Cancers
C.Advances in AI Fuel a Heated Debate in Biology
D.AI Tools Are Widely Used to Treat Rare Diseases

On New Year's Eve 2022,Heginbotham,86,was spending the holiday by herself for the first time. Her
husband died in June.
Heginbotham was feeling blue. The silence was almost unbearable and made the room feel colder than it
was
To cheer herself up,she decided to work on her holiday cards and send them to her friends and relatives.
She carefully selected each card, thinking of the joy they would bring to them. That afternoon, she drove to
Bethesda's post office to drop off the cards.
When Heginbotham was dropping off her cards,a kind-hearted man called Zein saw her and thought she
was too old to handle so many cards.Zein approached her with a warm smile.
"Ma'am,do you need any help?"he asked gently.Heginbotham hesitated for a moment,feeling a bit
embarrassed, but she was grateful for the offer.
Zein helped her fill in the addresses, chatting about holidays.Heginbotham felt a sense of connection, and
she showed great gratitude to Zein by sending a holiday card to him as well.
When Heginbotham returned to her car, though,it wouldn't start because of the battery,a problem she had
encountered before. There were two jumper cables (in her car.She just needed to connect the positive
and negative terminals (E)of the batteries of two cars. After the connection was made, she kept the other
car's engine running, and then started her car with a dead battery. But she was too old to manage it herself. Her
heart sank.
It was cold outside, and she realized that calling roadside assistance would likely take a long time,
especially on a holiday. It was getting dark, and the thought of waiting alone in the cold made her scared. So
she went back inside the post office.
The post office was nearly empty, with Zein and only a few workers finishing up their shifts.Heginbotham
felt a bit embarrassed, but she knew she had to try.
"Does anyone know how to jumpstart a car?"Heginbotham asked.

第一节(满分15分)
The topic of taking part in after-school activities is becoming more and more popular
recently. In my opinion, parents should go further and know what their children really desire for.
It is true that good hobbies make life more colorful and enjoyable. However, things are
different if children have no interest in the "hobby"that their parents choose for them.
Without interest as motivation, they will find it a burden rather than a hobby. My 6-year-old
neighbour always cries while playing the piano. She is busier on weekends than on weekdays
because she has to take part in many after school activities.
In conclusion, parents are supposed to help children learn some things that They are
interested in.From my point of view, only in this way can they learn well and be happy!
第二节(满分25分)
Without hesitation,Zein said right away,"I do."He quickly followed Heginbotham outside.
Zein began to work on jumpstarting the car and told Heginbotham not to worry. He prepared two
jumper cables and connected the positive and negative terminals of the batteries of the two cars.
He kept his car's engine running, and then tried to start the car. After a few tries,Zein finally
started the car.Zein then suggested that he follow her home to make sure she wouldn't face the
same problem again. For the next 30 minutes,he drove behind her, providing a sense of security.
They arrived at her home safely, and Heginbotham felt a wave of relief and gratitude.
Heginbotham warmly invited Zein into the house for a drink. They had cookies and tea and
engaged in a heartfelt conversation. Two strangers who really had known nothing about each other
became pretty close.Heginbotham shared that she worried about aging without her husband and
wondered what she would do next.Zein,in turn, shared stories of his own life and how his faith
had guided him through difficult times.Their conversation flowed easily, and they discovered
many shared interests. They became good friends and remain friends today.Heginbotham realized
that sometimes,a simple act of kindness could change a person's day and even their life.
