Probably a lot. To treat nearsightedness, many opt for surgery (选择手术). But is surgery a permanent (永久的) solution? People with nearsightedness see things as blurry (模糊的) because their eyes focus light incorrectly. Normally, light enters the eye and focuses directly on the retina (视网膜), which is the part at the back of the eye that sends images to the brain. In nearsighted people, light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it. As a result, distant objects appear blurry while close objects remain clear. Current treatments fall into two main types: laser eye surgery, which reshapes the cornea (角膜) using lasers, and intraocular lens implants (IOLs), which involve replacing the natural lenses (晶状体) found in the front part of the eye with clear artificial ones. The IOLs method is often used on patients with serious cases of nearsightedness. “After laser eye surgery, I can see very clearly, and life is more convenient without having to wear eyeglasses,” said Xu Jiayi, 19, who had the surgery five months ago. “However, it hurt a lot right after the surgery and applying medicine afterward was troublesome. At first, there were four types of medicines, then the number became six,” she added. These medicines help the eye heal after surgery and prevent dry eye and other eye problems. “Strictly speaking, the surgery just let you ‘take off your glasses’, instead of treating nearsightedness from the root,” said Wei Wenbin from the Beijing Tongren Hospital at a press conference (新闻发布会) in July. He explained that the surgery doesn’t fix the changes in the eye’s structure caused by nearsightedness. If you don’t look after your eye health, nearsightedness may return even after surgery. “After staring at the computer all day at work and then constantly (不停地) using my phone afterward, things start to look blurry to me again,” said Du Anni, 32, who had laser eye surgery nine years ago. A detailed eye checkup is also needed each year to catch any eye issues. 1.What occurs in near-sighted eyes? A.Eye muscles weaken. B.The retina gets damaged. C.Light goes past the retina. D.Light focuses in front of the retina. 2.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.The types of eye surgeries. B.The risks of eye surgery. C.The advantages of eye surgery. D.The process of laser eye surgery. 3.How did Xu Jiayi describe her experience with the surgery? A.Painful and frightening. B.Troublesome but effective. C.Cheap and convenient. D.Uncomfortable but quick. 4.What did Wei Wenbin imply about the surgery? A.It cures near-sightedness. B.It strengthens the retina. C.It changes the eye structure forever. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet. 7 Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 8 9 In this way, they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. D.Uncomfortable but quick. 4.What did Wei Wenbin imply about the surgery? A.It cures near-sightedness. B.It strengthens the retina. C.It changes the eye structure forever. He explained that the surgery doesn’t fix the changes in the eye’s structure caused by nearsightedness.(“严格来说,这个手术只是让你‘摘下眼镜’,而不是从根部治疗近视,”北京同仁医院的Wei Wenbin在7月份的新闻发布会上说。他解释说,手术并不能修复由近视引起的眼睛结构变化)”可知,Wei Wenbin的话暗示了手术治标不治本,不是一个永久的解决办法。故选D。 七、七选五 (24-25高一上·山东)There is an English saying: 5 Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 6 Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. A.Laughter can prolong one’s life. B.Laughter is the best medicine. C.If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial. D.They’ve found that laughter really improves people’s health.
