An owl (猫头鹰) named Flaco escaped New York’s Central Park Zoo last week after his cage was broken. This set off a bird-hunt of police officers and park rangers (护林员). Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild. They placed some of his favorite treats in the open air to attempt to trap him.
Flaco was not fooled. Instead, he was sighted flying over5th Avenue, and Central Park’s skating rink. A number of New Yorkers came into Central Park to try to catch a glimpse of Flaco, taking photos with excitement.
But this week, zoo officials announced they accepted that Flaco remained in Central Park because he had been seen bringing up bones and fur from the park’s community of rats. “He has been very successful at hunting and consuming lots of rats in the park.” zoo officials told the New York Post.“ And that’s amazing. He’s hunting on his own. He’s flying better. Flaceo really seems to be enjoying himself out there.”
There is a caution attached to this story of an owl who is making it on his own in the city that never sleeps. Owls are nocturnal. They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of people who work the overnight shift. Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.
4. Why were zoo officials concerned about Flaco’s ability to survive?
A. Because his favourite food was too little. B. Because he might be attacked by police.
C. Because his cage was severely damaged. D. Because he was kept in his cage for long.
5. What can we infer about Flaco from the third paragraph?
A. He has adapted to the wild. B. He has found his previous home.
C. He still faces great challenges. D. He dislikes the rats in the park.
6. What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Scary-looking. B. Shy and quiet.
C. Active at night. D. Badly-behaved.
7. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the interruption to Flaco’s sleep?
A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Disapproving.
D 5. A 6. C 7. D
根据第一段中“Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild.(动物园官员担心,在动物园笼子里被关了13年的弗拉科可能已经失去了在野外生存所需的能力)”可推知,这只猫头鹰被圈在笼子里面过长了,可能失去了捕食能力。
根据第三段中“He’s hunting on his own. He’s flying better. Flaceo really seems to be enjoying himself out there.(他在独自打猎。他飞得好多了。弗拉西奥在外面玩得很开心)”可推知,他现在已经适应了野外生活。故选A。
根据划线词后文“They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of people who work the overnight shift.(它们在夜间四处寻找食物。他们白天睡觉,或者试着睡觉,就像很多上夜班的人一样)”可知,猫头鹰在夜间四处寻找食物,白天睡觉,属于夜间活动的动物。故该词意思为“夜间活动的”。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.(然而,据报道,一些不知道正确观鸟行为的纽约人白天看到弗拉克在树上睡觉,就开始对它大喊大叫。这打断了他的睡眠。弗莱克不能用纽约人传统的回答方式说“嘘,嘘”。毕竟,鸟不能给人竖中指)”可推知,作者的态度为不赞同。故选D。

The 2026 World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, organizers FIFA announced on Sunday. The New York held off a strong challenge from Dallas to win the July 19 game, the culmination (高潮) of the expanded 48-team tournament (锦标赛) being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
The competition will kick-off with the opening game at Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium on June 11. Atlanta and Dallas will host the semi-finals while the third-place game will be played in Miami. The quarter-final games will take place in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami and Boston. A total of 16 cities across the three countries will host games, while most of the matches will be held in the US.
The New York had lobbied (游说) hard on the city’s experience at hosting major international events and its position as a global city with easy transportation connections for fans. There is some compensation for Dallas with the spot being given nine total games — the most of any spot. Los Angeles had also thrown a hat into the ring, but the attempt struggled among disagreements with FIFA about tournament upgrades (升级) needed to National Football League playground, SoFi Stadium. The Azteca will become the first stadium to host the World Cup tournament games in three separate editions after 1970 and 1986.
The World Cup will take place during celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American independence. A round-of-16 game will be held on July 4, Independence Day, in Philadelphia, where the US Declaration of Independence was signed.
The expansion of the tournament to 48 teams from 32 means there will be an additional 24 matches, making up 104 games across the 16 chosen playgrounds. The tournament will take 12 groups, with the top two going through and the eight best third-placed teams. From there, the competition is a straight knock-out format until the champion is determined.
8. Which city will hold most matches?
A. Dallas. B. Azteca. C. New York. D. Los Angeles.
9. What made Los Angeles fail to host the 2026 World Cup final?
A. It has hosted the World Cup games in three separate editions.
B. It has no experiences in hosting major international events.
C. It isn’t a global city with easy transportation connections.
D. Its stadium doesn’t agree with the FIFA requirement.
10. What can we learn about the Azteca Stadium from the text?
A. It will host the fourth World Cup tournament game.
B. It is located in New Jersey of the United States.
C. It will host the first game of the tournament.
D. It will celebrate its 250th anniversary during the tournament.
11. How many teams will advance to the second stage?
A. 12. B. 24. C. 32. D. 48.
A 9. D 10. C 11. C

Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴), giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and acrospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary — like the wall of a box — it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
12. What makes the robot roll faster and faster?
A. The ribbon. B. The central axis.
C. The shape and material. D. The higher surface temperature.
13. How does the author introduce the new soft robots?
A. By explaining the robot’s working ways. B. By quoting experts’ opinions.
C. By making some comparisons. D. By offering reasons and results.
14. What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring- bots?
A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The New Soft Robots B. Ribbons and Their Rolling
C. Three Creative Movements D. Twisted Rings and the Axis
D 13. A 14. B 15. A

This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上(这个温度高于周围空气的温度)时,接触该表面的一段带子会变短,而处于空气中的那一段则不会。
根据第二段“The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.(这种新型软机器人被称为“扭曲环机器人”。它们由类似丝带的材料制成,然后在末端连接起来形成一个环状结构)”以及第三段“When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上(这个温度高于周围空气的温度)时,接触该表面的一段带子会变短,而处于空气中的那一段则不会。这就会引发一种滚动运动:表面温度越高,机器人滚动的速度就越快)”可知,作者主要通过解释机器人的工作方式来介绍新的软体机器人。故选A。
根据最后一段““Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”(“软体机器人技术仍是一个相对较新的领域。”Yin说道。“寻找新的方法来以可重复且有规划的方式控制软体机器人的动作,能够推动该领域的发展。而增进我们对于可能实现之事的理解,也是一件令人兴奋的事情。”)”可知,Yin对新型软体机器人的态度是积极的。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Rescarchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.(研究人员开发出了一种新型的软机器人设计,它能够同时具备三种行为:向前滚动、像唱片一样旋转以及沿着围绕中心点的路径行进。这种无需人类或计算机控制就能运行的设备,有望用于制造能够自主探索和绘制未知环境的地图的软机器人)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍了新型软体机器人——扭曲环机器人的相关工作原理和特点等。因此推断A项“新软体机器人”为最佳标题。故选A。

Losing a small wetland might not seem like a big problem for the whole world or even a whole country. ____16____ Now, when it rains, the town gets flooded. And it’s terrible for the special animals and plants that live there.
Luckily, countries and international groups are starting to see how important wetlands are — both for local places and the whole world. Some have made “no-net-loss” rules to make sure the total number of wetlands won’t get smaller. ____17____
____18____ For example, over $10 billion (£8.2 billion) has been used on a 35-year plan to fix the Florida Everglades. This is a special group of subtropical wetlands, and it’s the biggest and most expensive ecological repair project in the world.
Many places are also making new wetlands. In Britain, beavers (水獭) are being brought back to some enclosed areas. It’s hoped this will make more wetlands in the country, and bring all the good things these homes can give. Beaver dams (坝) and the wetlands they make can cut flooding by up to 60%. ____19____ One study found that because of these cute “workers”, the number of local mammal (哺乳动物) types went up by 86%.
It doesn’t really matter if the world has lost 20% or 50% of its wetlands. ____20____ As the UN said recently, 1 billion people depend on wetlands to make a living. Saving and fixing these important homes is key to having a future where we can live well without harming the planet.
A. But it’s really bad for the nearby town.
B. They also help more wild animals live there.
C. Wetlands provide food and homes for beavers.
D. After all, wetlands seem less important than rivers.
E. That means builders must fix any wetlands they destroy.
F. Wetlands are being protected around the world at huge costs.
G. What matters is that people stop regarding wetlands as useless.
A 17. E 18. F 19. B 20. G

上文“Losing a small wetland might not seem like a big problem for the whole world or even a whole country.(失去一个小湿地对整个世界甚至整个国家来说似乎都不是什么大问题)”说明失去小湿地从宏观角度看似乎不是大问题,空处和前文为转折关系,说明从局部角度看有严重后果。 符合语境,下文“Now, when it rains, the town gets flooded. And it’s terrible for the special animals and plants that live there.(现在,一下雨,小镇就被淹了。这对生活在那里的特殊动植物来说太可怕了)”进一步说明了这种糟糕的情况。故选A。
上文“Some have made “no-net-loss” rules to make sure the total number of wetlands won’t get smaller.(一些国家制定了“无净损失”规则,以确保湿地的总数不会减少)”说明制定了保护湿地总数的规则,空处和前文为顺接关系,说明规则的具体内容。
下文“For example, over $10 billion (£8.2 billion) has been used on a 35-year plan to fix the Florida Everglades. 【19题详解】
上文“Beaver dams (坝) and the wetlands they make can cut flooding by up to 60%.(海狸筑坝和它们形成的湿地可以减少高达60%的洪水)”说明海狸筑坝和湿地能减少洪水,空处和前文为顺接关系,说明还有其他好处。 符合语境,下文“One study found that because of these cute “workers”, the number of local mammal (哺乳动物) types went up by 86%.(一项研究发现,由于这些可爱的“工人”,当地哺乳动物的种类增加了86%)”进一步说明了这种好处。故选B。
上文“It doesn’t really matter if the world has lost 20% or 50% of its wetlands.(世界失去了20%还是50%的湿地并不重要)”说明湿地损失的比例不是关键问题,空处和前文为转折关系,说明真正重要的是什么。 符合语境,下文“As the UN said recently, 1 billion people depend on wetlands to make a living. Saving and fixing these important homes is key to having a future where we can live well without harming the planet.(正如联合国最近所说,10亿人依靠湿地谋生。拯救和修复这些重要的家园是我们拥有一个在不伤害地球的情况下生活得很好的未来的关键)”进一步说明了保护湿地的重要性。故选G。

C
A. 12. B. 24. C. 32. D. 48.
D

A But it’s really bad for the nearby town.
