The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards. For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U. S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U. S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature. Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story. In 2015,a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy(隐私)in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird. In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her. 4. What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs? A. She was regarded as the greatest writer in America. B. She is the most popular writer in American schools in history. C. She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel. D. She made great contributions to American literature. 5. Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out? A. She tried to get out of criticism B. She felt uneasy about her novel’s influence. C. She suffered a stroke and was in recovery. D. She wanted to write another novel. 6. What can we learn about Harper, Lee’s Go Set a Watchman? A. It is based on her own life story. B. It continues the story of her earlier novel. C. It won her lots of honors and awards. D. It is adapted into a famous film. 7. What can best describe Harper Lee? A. Caring but stubborn. B. Productive but bad-tempered. C. Influential but simple. D. Inspiring but struggling. D 5. B 6. B 7. 根据文章第一段“Harper Lee(1926—2016)was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird(published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. (哈珀·李(1926-2016)是一位美国小说家,以《杀死一只知更鸟》(1960年出版)而闻名,该书获得了1961年的普利策奖,已成为现代美国文学的经典之作。)”可知,哈珀·李因为《杀死一只知更鸟》这本书为美国文学做出了巨大贡献。故选D项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. ( 李想过一种简单的生活,对于这部小说给她带来的关注她感到很不舒服,小说出版后,她几乎从公众生活中消失了。)”可知,哈珀·李的小说出版后她从公众生活中消失了是因为她对小说的影响力感到不安。故选B项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. (《设立守望者》更像是初稿,以《杀死一只知更鸟》中的小女孩斯科特为主角。《设立守望者》讲述了斯科特成年后的故事。)”可知,《设立守望者》延续了《杀死一只知更鸟》的故事。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. (该书获得了1961年的普利策奖,已成为现代美国文学的经典之作。)”可知,哈珀·李是有影响力的;根据文章第三段“Lee wanted to live a simple life (李想过一种简单的生活)”可知,哈珀·李的生活是简单的。综上,哈珀·李是有影响力的但是生活是简单的。故选C项。 C Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters. This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jigue t from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting- edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters. The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear. Researchers believe it is most likely that signal birds would use the sound to sense storms and tsunamis (海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away. The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami.“I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.” 8. Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1? A. Strange. B. Risky. C. Unknown. D. Frequent. 9. What is the function of the tags? A. Reporting the birds’ situations. B. Distinguishing bird species. C. Tracking natural disasters. D. Guiding researchers to islands. 10. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To explain a concept. B. To prove an assumption. C. To present a new topic. D. To make comparisons. 11. What might be the best title for the text? A. How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters? B. How Does a Warning System Function? C. Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters? D. Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research? B 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段的“Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska.(五年前,法国海军军官Jérôme Chardon正在收听一个关于斑尾塍鹬的迁徙之旅的广播节目,这种鸟会从新西兰飞往阿拉斯加,迁徙距离达到14,000公里)”以及划线单词的后半句话“as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities.(由于经常性的风暴袭击太平洋岛屿社区)”可知,太平洋岛屿社区经常受到风暴袭击,所以鸟类迁徙经过这里时会非常的危险。 根据第二段的“These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.(这些标签将鸟类的位置发送到国际空间站,后者再将数据传回地球上的科学家,科学家们随后可以跟踪这些鸟类,观察它们如何应对自然灾害)”可知,这些标签的功能是报告鸟类的位置和情况。故选A。 根据第三段“The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.(该项目专注于鸟类听觉低频声音的能力,而这种声音人类是听不到的。 通读全段,尤其是第一段的“Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.(Chardon想知道,了解鸟类是如何迁徙的是否能够帮助沿海社区避开自然灾害)”可知,文章主要探讨的是鸟类能否通过感知自然灾害来预警人类。 C。 D Art—no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply observe and enjoy it—is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. From the back seat, we saw her slowly turn toward my father. “No,” she said. “I thought you did.” That was how a seven-hour car trip turned into a sixteen-hour one, which was mostly spent in vain. On occasions like that, we had to learn to let go of our anger because we were ____32____ in a rolling box with the same people for the rest of the ____33____. Even if I sometimes felt like opening the car door and ____34____ one of my sisters out, I kept my feelings to myself. This is why road trips were like ____35____ universities to us. B Harper Lee(1926 - 2016)was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird(published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. A. A. Caring but stubborn. B. Productive but bad-tempered. C. Influential but simple. D. Inspiring but struggling. C Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami.“I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. D Art—no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply observe and enjoy it—is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. However, the particular benefits of artistic expression go much further. Studies suggest that art therapy (疗法) can be very valuable in treating issues such as depression and anxiety disorder. It is a great way to express your emotions without words process complex feelings and find relief. You don’t necessarily have to see a therapist in order to experience some of the benefits of artistic expression. There are many simple activities you can try from the comfort of your home such as art journaling, drawing, making collections, sculpting with clay, etc. It doesn’t matter what media you choose. The only thing that matters is that you feel comfortable using it. Human beings are naturally creative, and all you need to do to complete an art therapy activity successfully is to be with yourself and your emotions. Once you free your creativity, your inner artist will quickly wake up.
