I love my job in Paris. I work at the Eiffel Tower. Every day, I lead guests and visitors to take the elevator to viewing platforms (观景台). There, I will point out the attractions and help people find the best places for taking photos.
Millions of visitors come to Paris every year from all around the world. Most visitors stay here for three or four days. As for me, I visited Paris 35 years ago — and never left. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. But I found my job in this city.
I suffered from Asperger syndrome (阿斯伯格综合征) when I was six years old. I was shy and loved to read and memorize facts. One of the biggest problems I faced was communicating with others. I couldn’t understand what others were talking about.
I arrived in Paris when I was in my 20s. I happened to get a job here. At first, I had a problem with change in everyday life, especially when communicating with people. But I like to memorize facts, and that really helps in my job because people love to learn all of the interesting things about Paris.
I was afraid to talk with people before. Now, I’ve discovered that I talk a lot! I love coming to work. Every day when I come to work, I feel it’s time for me to provide the best service for visitors. I love to learn something new because I can’t wait to share the information with others. I don’t really know what the future holds for me, as tomorrow is not promised to anyone, but I will continue to work here.
4. What is the author’s job in Paris?
A. A cameraman. B. A teacher. C. A doctor. D. A guide.
5. What do people with Asperger syndrome have problems in?
A. Social skills. B. Writing skills. C. Reading skills. D. Management skills.
6. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A. He has a gift for talking. B. He lives a busy life every day.
C. He enjoys his job very much now. D. He is worried about the future of his job.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. I Took a Special Trip in Paris. B. I Found My Dream Job in Paris.
C. I Found My Biggest Advantages. D. I Suffered from Asperger Syndrome.
C
Most people can point to an experience in their lives where personal relationships have caused them emotional harm. However, does building better relationships with others have to involve the risk of getting hurt?
One popular theory is the hedgehog’s dilemma, also called the porcupine’s dilemma. It has its roots in the thinking of German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who proposed that, even with the best of intentions, humans harm each other when they attempt to have close and friendly relationships.
It goes like this. One cold winter night, a group of porcupines gathered to keep warm, but they hurt each other with their quills (刺), forcing them to move apart. When feeling cold, they moved closer, only to be hurt again. Repeatedly, they eventually found the ideal distance. So the theory ends with the advice: Keep your distance.
However, keeping distance is not enough. If you’ ve been hurt before, it might be that your quills are up, and you’ve fallen into defence (防御) mode. Hilary, a psychologist, points to some examples of common defence mode such as going blank and regarding the present reaction as criticism. Most of these defensive reactions originate from early experiences of hurt.
“In treatments, if people can be helped to recognize the defences by tracking back through the personal experiences, they can be encouraged to be understanding. Then they, have a chance to change and not just repeat old behaviors,” Hilary suggests. “Defences need to be respected and not knocked down in one step. Removing one brick at a time from the wall is very important.”
Unlike hedgehogs, humans don’t come with the quills built in. So, when we learn to lower our defences for safe, loving people, there’s a chance we actually can have it all.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By telling a story.
C. By raising a question. D. By expressing concerns.
9. What is the purpose of the porcupines’ story in Paragraph 3?
A. To prove the danger of quills.
B. To advise the way of socializing.
C. To explain the hedgehog’s dilemma.
D. To show how porcupines keep warm.
10. What does Hilary advise people to do when bringing down defences?
A. Address problems with patience.
B. Avoid discussing past experiences.
C. Immediately remove self-protection.
D. Accept the behaviour without changing.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. Psychology Today. B. Wildlife Focus.
C. Technology Review. D. Runner’s World.

Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?
12. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ability. B. Interest. C. Taste. D. Method.
13. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do?
A. Learn foreign languages by themselves.
B. Spend more money on home schooling.
C. Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
14. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism?
A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores.
C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning Betters Human Brain
B. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages
C. Language Opens a New World to Kids
D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success

Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities.
