Recently, many people have fallen in love with the cute marmots (土拨鼠) because of the online short videos about their fighting. However, many organizations have quickly warned (警告) people that these seemingly lovely wild animals are surely high-risk carriers of the plague (瘟疫) .
Marmots are common rodents (啮齿目动物) in North-west China. Listed as a second-class protected animals in China, they always choose cool mountain grasslands, open deserts, and rocky hills as their homes. They are good at digging (挖) holes, which are usually deep and each hole has a different use. Fresh grass, juicy plants, and treats like apples or lettuce fill their diet. Living in family groups, these social animals work together and share information often to stay alive in the difficult environment.
Marmots may look harmless, but those furry animals carry plague bacteria (鼠疫杆菌), which cause a disease that killed over 100 million people like the Black Death in the 14th century. The disease can spread through small cuts or even breath drops, causing high fever, painful lumps (肺炎) under the skin, and bleeding. Without treatment (治疗), it is highly dangerous with the chances of staying alive as low as zero.
The National Health Commission advises:
● Keep safe distance (距离) when meeting wild marmots.
● Never keep them as pets, touch, or feed them.
● Report animals to wildlife experts (专家) instead of helping them directly.
● Go to hospital in time if you develop a fever or lumps after touching them.
The recent online videos of feeding and touching marmots have raised warning. While their round faces might make us want to get close, health organizations warn everyone that cuteness isn't worth risking lives. Protecting both wildlife and public health means watching animals safely from a faraway place.
9. What caused people's interest in marmots?
A. A report about marmots. B. Some funny short videos online.
C. A new study on marmots. D. Government protection laws.
10. What should you do if you find a sick marmot in the wild?

D. helps animals dig deeper holes for living
12. The writer talks about the Black Death in Paragraph 3 to ______.
A. show the disease was not serious in history B. show diseases are similar now and before C. describe how marmots move to new places D. say old medical care was not good enough

A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹)were put back into the sea near Dalian in North-east China's Liaoning Province in 2023 as part of China's efforts to protect wildlife in danger.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can have babies in Chinese waters. Like birds travelling with the seasons, they arrive around October every year in Liaodong Bay (湾),and take the long journey back to the North-west Pacific in May after raising their young. They are often called the "pandas of the sea".
Thanks to China's top-class national protection in recent years, the number of spotted seals in Chinese waters increases around 2 000, while the global (全球的)number is between 400000 and 600 000. Studies have shown that these 2 000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study on spotted seals.
To protect these rare animals and their ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. Ten years later, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560 000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources (资源)。 They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seals and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.
1. Where were the 23 spotted seals put back into?
2. What is the other name of the spotted seals?
3. With China's protection, what happens to the spotted seals in Chinese waters?
4. When were the wetlands added into the List of Wetlands of International Importance?
