B Chinese Nobel Prize-winning physicist Chen Ning Yang, one of the most influential scientists in modern physics, passed away in Beijing on October 18 due to illness at the age of 103. Born in 1922, Yang was brought up surrounded by the Tsinghua campus, where his father was a math professor. After finishing his undergraduate degree, he obtained his master’s degree from Tsinghua. He enrolled in the University of Chicago in the United States to pursue a doctorate in 1946 and was strongly influenced by Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, who had won the same Nobel Prize in 1938, and conducted in-depth research on particle physics. He later became a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Yang won the Nobel Prize in 1957 with Tsung-Dao Lee for their investigation of the so-called parity laws that led to “important discoveries regarding the elementary particles,” according to the Nobel Prize website. They were the first Chinese-born Nobel Prize winners in physics. Professor Yang was deeply devoted to his homeland, making remarkable contributions to China’s scientific and educational developments. His visit to China in 1971 led to a wave of visits by overseas scholars, earning him recognition as the pioneer in building the bridge of academic exchange between China and the United States. He later proposed the restoration and strengthening of basic scientific research to China’s central leadership. He also raised funds to establish the “Committee on Educational Exchange with China”, which has continuously sponsored nearly 100 Chinese scholars for advanced studies in the United States. These scholars later became the backbone of China’s scientific and technological development. He undertook extensive work to promote China’s scientific and technological exchange and progress, offering advice and exercising significant influence on major Chinese scientific projects and the formulation of science and education policies. After returning to Tsinghua University in 1999, he took on developing the Institute for Advanced Study as his new mission. He poured enormous effort into advancing fundamental disciplines like physics and cultivating talents at Tsinghua, making remarkable contributions that greatly impacted the reform and development of Chinese higher education. Professor Yang’s life stands as a timeless chapter in human history — one that shines not only for China but for the global community of thinkers and innovators. 4. Who played an important role in Chen Ning Yang’s winning the Nobel Prize in 1957? A. His father who was a math professor. B. Tsung-Dao Lee who was the first Chinese-born Nobel Prize winner in physics. C. Enrico Fermi who had won the same Nobel Prize. D. A professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. 5. Why was Yang’s 1971 visit significant? A. It initiated academic exchanges with the US. B. It marked his final return to teach at Tsinghua. C. It focused on political dialogue. D. It promoted cultural activities in China. 6. What does the underlined word “cultivating” in paragraph 5 mean? A. praising B. nurturing C. discovering D. inviting 7. What can the text be classified as? A. Journey insights. B. book commentary. C. A news report. D. A research paper. C People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year. To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for connections between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later. In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world. “The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,’’ Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine (藤) when they should be being harvested.’’ Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread. Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,’’ says Kotz. “Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.’’ 8. What does the study focus on? A. The influence of climate change on food prices. B. The factors in the rising living costs. C. The effects of natural disasters on food production. D. The comparison of food prices in different regions. 9. How did researchers reach their conclusions? A. By analyzing a mass of data. B. By referring to previous studies. C. By tracking some cities for years. D. By conducting a survey among farmers. 10. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz? A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature. C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The influence of trade policies. 11. What does the author want to do in the last paragraph? A To call on people to pay attention to food security. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave. C. To explain the situation of global food inflation. D. To advise farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue. D The new e-skin improves tasks requiring accuracy and force control, overcoming a big challenge in advancing technology. Unlike traditional e-skins, this new e-skin stays accurate even when it stretches. “Much like human skin has to stretch and bend as we move, so does e-skin,” explains Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School. The breakthrough lies in an innovative hybrid response pressure sensor that Lu and her partners have developed over years. Lu sees the stretchable e-skin as an important part of a robot hand that can mirror the softness and sensitivity of a human hand. This new e-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine know how much force to use to, for example, hold a cup or touch a person. In demonstrations, the new e-skin allowed the robot hand to adapt to various sensitive tasks, such as accurately measuring human pulse (脉搏) and pulse waves, securely holding objects without dropping them and even handling unexpected items like coins inside a glass or pressing on a potato chip without breaking it. Lu and her team are currently exploring potential applications, including partnering to build a robotic arm equipped with the e-skin technology. They have also applied for a basic patent for the e-skin, indicating its potential for business use. In a world where the aging population exceeds (超过) the number of caregivers, the need for efficient and gentle care solutions is necessary. Lu believes robots equipped with advanced technologies like the stretchable e-skin could play a vital role in dealing with this global challenge. Beyond medicine,human-caring robots could be used in disasters. They could search for injured and trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building. From healthcare to disaster response, the potential is significant. With further development and cooperation with robotics companies, Lu hopes to see this e-skin technology make its way to the market, marking the beginning of a new era of human-robot interaction and care. 12. What advantage does the new e-skin have over traditional e-skins? A. It keeps accurate even when stretching. B. It enables robots to move at a fast speed. C. It allows robot hands to bend into all shapes. D. It helps robot hands control with less force. 13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The wide applications of the new e-skin. B. The important development of the new e-skin. C. The major challenge of the pressure sensor. D. The strong function of the pressure sensor. 14. What can robots with the new e-skin do for the global challenge of aging population? A. Reduce healthcare costs. B. Limit global business use. C. Replace human caregivers. D. Improve medical care efficiency. 15. What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new e-skin? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear C. Positive. D. Disapproving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Playing sports helps to maintain physical fitness. Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”. 85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day. Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan? Do you want flowers?” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me?” “A job?” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him. Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded. Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better. A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I’d be delighted to have you here.” “I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter. 注意:续写词数应为150左右。 Paragraph1: Carrying the flowers, Evan rushed home to surprise his mom. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2: Then, Evan and his mom hurried to return the money to Mrs. Carter. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025—2026学年度第一学期高二年级期中考试 英语试题 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? 4. A. To call on people to pay attention to food security. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave. C. To explain the situation of global food inflation. D. To advise farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue. 【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. Carter. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Carrying the flowers, Evan rushed home to surprise his mom. “Happy birthday, Mom!” he cried, running up to her. Evan smiled and was about to give her the bouquet when he suddenly noticed the envelope. He pulled it out and found the money in it. “But I told Mrs. Carter not to pay me! I think this got here by mistake!” said Evan. Paragraph 2: Then, Evan and his mom hurried to return the money to Mrs. Carter. When they reached her shop and were about to return the money, Mrs. Carter smiled and said, “It’s my pay for Evan. He did a very good job. Keep it.
