At first, there were 16 elephants in the group. But one baby elephant was born during the trip, so the number became 3 . Later, two young male (雄性的) elephants 4 the group and went in different directions.
Many people wanted to know 5 the teenage male elephants left. Shen Qingzhong has studied wild Asian elephants for over 30 years. He is the chief engineer (首席工程师) at Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. He said, “The elephants are ‘rebelling’ (叛逆的). It’s like when young people grow up and sometimes don’t 6 their parents.”
Shen also said that after watching elephants for years, he found a rule: male elephants often leave their group to 7 mates (配偶) when they are over six years old. The two male elephants that left this time are about ten years old. They just didn’t want to stay with their 8 and wanted to go out on their own. But when they are 14 years old, they will start to go back home more 9 .
Do you know how 10 elephants are? A newborn elephant has an IQ (intelligence quotient) like a 1-year-old baby. When it grows up to be an adult, its IQ is similar to, or even 11 than a 5-year-old child.
Baby elephants grow fast, too. A baby elephant can stand up in a few minutes 12 being born. About two hours later, it can walk beside its mother. And one week after birth, it will go with its mother to bathe (洗澡) in rivers 13 lakes.
Chen Mingyong is a 14 professor (教授) at Yunnan University. He noticed that the elephant group moved 15 . He thought one possible reason was that they were waiting for the two male elephants that had left to come back.

六、阅读理解
Have you heard of a cloud forest? Is it the same as a rainforest? Actually, it’s a very special kind of forest in cloudy mountains. There, clouds brush against trees and wet their leaves. Rain falls almost every day. Hundreds of mosses grow and cover everything like a soft green coat.
Plants of cloud forests live in an unusual way. They grow on the branches of trees instead of on the ground. The air is very damp, so plants can get all the water they need from the fog and rain. They live on the high parts of trees so that they can get more light to grow stronger.
There are many kinds of special animals in cloud forests. For example, tree kangaroos live in trees like monkeys. They use their long tails to balance just as monkeys do. Frogs have suckers (吸盘) on their toes so they can climb up trees and cross leaves easily. Many other special animals are waiting for us to discover, aren’t they?
Cloud forests are important to people. They give us healthy food crops, such as wild beans, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries. Furthermore (另外), they offer new medicine to treat cancer. Unluckily, the beautiful forests are in danger now. Why? Firstly, the climate is getting warmer, but plants and animals in cloud forests like to live in a cool place. It’s difficult for them to find a proper place to live. Secondly, people cut down many trees to plant crops or feed cows. The animals are losing their homes.
Once cloud forests are gone, there must be a huge loss (损失) to humans. Save the cloud forests before it’s too late!
