Sayings are used every day. You may ask an unhappy friend why she’s “feeling blue”. If you’ve done only a small part of a big job, you might call it “a drop in the bucket (桶).” These sayings don’t mean exactly what the words say. But it’s easy to tell why we use them. Blue is a cool, quiet color. So it’s a good word for “sad”. A bucket holds too many drops of water to count. So just one drop is very little.
Other sayings are more difficult to understand. When you are about to go to bed, you are going to “hit the hay (干草)”. This saying does not make much sense unless you know where it came from. It was first used in the 1930s. At that time, many Americans were out of work. Some went from place to place, looking for jobs. At night they were very tired. They often made a bed of hay in a field or barn (谷仓). As soon as their heads “hit the hay”, they fell asleep.
Here is another saying. When you are sick, you might say you are “under the weather”. But why? This saying is more than 200 years old. It began in the days when many people went from place to place by boat. When storm winds rocked the boat, people often felt sick. The boat was sailing (航行) “under the weather”.
Young kids may find old sayings like these hard to understand, and old people may also have difficulty understanding new sayings. That’s why a granny might not know what you mean by saying “give me five”. She might think you’re “off your rocker (发疯)”.

Before each exam season, all you can think about for days is studying, preparing, and trying to get the best scores. Even after the exams, some new worries seem to pop into your mind. You may wonder, “Did I write that correctly? Why did I even waste time on that question?”
But did you know this stressful exam period also teaches you important life lessons? Check out what these lessons are, and keep them in mind. They matter far beyond exams and will last a lifetime.
Time management is the first lesson you can learn. Before exams, you carefully plan hours for each subject—sometimes even giving up fun activities or gatherings to study. This helps you learn not only how to use time wisely, but also how to stick to your timetable.
Resilience is also a gift exams give you. There are moments you want to give up when you prepare for your exams, but you push through and keep trying. That’s resilience: the strength to face challenges without giving up, even when things are quite difficult.
Finally, exams build self-awareness (自我意识). You have to stay calm when surprises happen—like unexpected questions or lower scores than you hoped. Exams help you know yourself better—how you study, what motivates (激励) you, and what holds you back. Awareness is the first step towards growth.
So next time exams get you down, remember: they are not just about grades. Every exam is secretly training you for bigger challenges ahead. When life throws you a “pop test”, you’ll realise you’ve already practised the skills to deal with it.

How to Face Trouble in Life
Life is like a journey, and we often meet troubles. I once had trouble learning English. I was afraid to speak in class because I thought my pronunciation was poor. I felt really shy and upset at that time. However, I decided to face it bravely. I asked my English teacher for help and she encouraged me a lot. I also kept practicing speaking English aloud every morning. Finally, I made great progress.

You can write the things that make you angry down on paper. After you write down your thoughts, read them over until they no longer make you angry and throw them away. Some people choose to burn them. 39
