Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.
“Social media is foreign to many older professionals—but very important for connecting with today’s customers,” Ms Van Tubbergh said. “We have this workforce sitting in schools doing this already but they’re doing it for fun.” Ms Van Tubbergh’s company, which helps launch products to market, took then Year 10 students Braith Mansfield and Tahmana Rudolph on for two weeks’ work experience.
Ms Van Tubbergh said with a bit of guidance and help with spelling and presenting in a professional environment, the boys now do about 80% of Elm’s social media marketing work for online customers. The pair work one day a week with Elm at Gosford and the rest at Kariong High School. Their duties include stand-alone posts on social media platforms, videos, stories and website headers. They recently finished a hard copy flyer(传单)for a major retailer that will be seen by every consumer who visits the website.
“I am so impressed by the performance of the two teenagers, who have helped grow the company’s social media following by 600%,” said Ms Van Tubbergh. “Braith, 17, and Tahmana, 16—now in Year 11—came into the business with a lot of unexplored social media experience. Working at Elm has provided them with a ‘digital platform of work that is worth its weight in gold’—a valuable resource they can show other employers when starting a full-time career.”
Braith and Rudolph are among 42 NSW Central Coast students doing Year 11 and 12 as part of a School-Based Apprenticeship and Training(SBAT)program. NSW Education SBAT strategic officer Cecile Oakes said they needed more companies like Elm to take on students and give them the benefit of real world experience.
4. Why did Elm Professional Services hire Braith and Rudolph?
A. They have plenty of business smarts.
B. They hope to gain valuable work experience.
C. They hope to get paid and become financially independent.
D. They can help to grow the company’s social media following.
5. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The two teenagers’ role in Elm.
B. Elm’s social media marketing work.
C. The two teenagers’ unexpected gains in Elm.
D. Elm’s guidance and help to the two teenagers.
6. What do Ms Van Tubbergh’s words in the fourth paragraph suggest?
A. She will recommend the two teenagers to other employers.
B. The two teenagers should start a full-time career upon graduation.
C. Starting a career in social media is a win-win for the two teenagers and the company.
D. The two students have not yet explored their social media experience.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. NSW Education SBAT program has been a great success.
B. More NSW Central Coast students are likely to be taken on.
C. NSW Central Coast students have rich real world experience.
D. Braith and Rudolph will continue to work for Elm after graduation.

根据第一段“Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.( Elm Professional Services公司的老板Mia Van Tubbergh拥有丰富的商业经验,但却不懂社交媒体。因此,她转向年轻一代,并雇用了两名懂社交媒体的高中生。)”以及第二段中“Ms Van Tubbergh’s company, which helps launch products to market, took then Year 10 students Braith Mansfield and Tahmana Rudolph on for two weeks’ work experience.( Van Tubbergh女士的公司帮助将产品推向市场,让当时10年级的学生Braith Mansfield和Tahmana Rudolph参加了为期两周的工作体验。)”
根据第三段中“Their duties include stand-alone posts on social media platforms, videos, stories and website headers. They recently finished a hard copy flyer(传单)for a major retailer that will be seen by every consumer who visits the website.(他们的职责包括在社交媒体平台上发布独立的帖子、视频、故事和网站标题。他们最近为一家大型零售商制作了一份纸质传单,每个访问该网站的消费者都能看到。)”可知,这一段重点讲述的是两位少年在这家名为Elm Professional Services公司的工作角色。故选A。
根据第四段中““I am so impressed by the performance of the two teenagers, who have helped grow the company’s social media following by 600%,” said Ms Van Tubbergh.( Van Tubbergh女士说:“这两位青少年的表现给我留下了深刻的印象,他们帮助公司的社交媒体粉丝增长了600%。”)”以及“Working at Elm has provided them with a ‘digital platform of work that is worth its weight in gold’—a valuable resource they can show other employers when starting a full-time career.(在Elm工作为他们提供了一个“价值千金的工作数字平台”,这是他们在开始全职工作时可以向其他雇主展示的宝贵资源。)”
根据最后一段中“NSW Education SBAT strategic officer Cecile Oakes said they needed more companies like Elm to take on students and give them the benefit of real world experience.(新南威尔士州教育局战略官员塞西尔·奥克斯表示,他们需要更多像Elm这样的公司来招收学生,并为他们提供真实世界的经验。)”

We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
8. What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?
A. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
D. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
9. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2?
A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method
10. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
11 What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go
B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future
C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases
D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第一段最后一句“But is that easier said than done?(但这说起来容易做起来难吗?)” 第二段第一句“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)”
根据划线词前一句“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power.(成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”和划线词后的“such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. (比如通过降低进口税来降低价格,以及不收取道路税和停车费。)”可知,划线词后的举例是对incentive的进一步说明,通过降低进口税来降价以及不收取道路税和停车费,这些有助于降低购买和使用成本,有助于激励人们购买,incentive意为“激励措施”,与encouragement(起激励作用的事物)意思最接近。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。文章第二段讲到“Currently, battery life is an issue (目前,电池寿命是一个问题)”以及“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. (成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”可知,C项“在全球交通完全电动化的道路上有四个障碍”是错误的。最后一段讲到“But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future (但是科林·赫伦警告说“电动汽车”并不意味着零碳排放的未来)”可知,A项“电动汽车将创造一个零碳的未来”是错误的。第二段还讲到“The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars (固态电池将带来巨大的飞跃,它将首先出现在手机和笔记本电脑中,然后才会发展为汽车)”可知,D项“首先将固态电池应用于电动汽车将是一次“大跃进””是错误的。根据第二段“Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.(一些国家还为电动汽车提供专用车道,超越可能陷入拥堵的传统汽车。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)” 故选A。

When I was a boy, I always wore turtleneck shirts because I was so sensitive and shy. I worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. I was younger than everyone else because my good marks had allowed me to skip second grade, but this added nothing to my already low self-confidence.
When I was 14, my parents divorced (离婚). I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊) and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated and alone. One day, my aunt called. This seemed like a miracle to me. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on my birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest, and she thought I should try it, too. She told me she firmly believed I could perform on stage like the other kids since she had seen me do skits (幽默小品) for the family at Christmas.
I was a little taken aback, Me? On stage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to my entire shy personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds and agreed to enter the contest. All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in Ville d’Anjou, where the competition would take place. I was taken by an energy I had never felt before. The hours and the obstacles no longer mattered. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and impact my marks. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.

Four months later, the big night arrived. The auditorium buzzed with excitement, and my palms sweated as I waited backstage. When my name echoed through the hall, I gripped the edge of my speech notes and stepped into the spotlight. At first, my voice shook, but as I talked about overcoming shyness and finding courage in Aunt Ginette’s belief, I relaxed. The hours of practice kicked in, and I spoke steadily, pouring my heart into every word. When I finished, the audience cheered loudly. I bowed, and through the bright lights, I caught a glimpse of my father. He was sitting there, watching me intently.
When I saw my father’s face, his eyes were glowing with pride. He walked over quickly and patted my shoulder firmly. “You were amazing,” he said, his voice warm. “I should have supported you sooner instead of worrying about grades.” His words hit me deeply, erasing the distance that had lingered between us. I smiled, feeling a weight lift off my chest. Though I only won third prize, it didn’t matter. That night, I gained more than a trophy. I found confidence and reconnected with my father. The shy boy in turtlenecks was gone; I’d finally found the courage to be myself.

A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method
11. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go
B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future
C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases
