You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. In a moment and almost unwillingly, you’re doing the same thing. You just can’t help it and you catch his smile. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honor of World Smile Day (the first Friday in October), it’s the time we got real answers to this matter. Is smiling contagious (感染性的) ?
Well, a study in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences journal gives the answer “yes”. As part of the research, social psychologists (心理学家) looked into why we often copy (模仿) people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the conclusions (结论) was that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. So, for example, when a friend tells us some good news happily, we may unconsciously (无意识地) show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so, we are feeling and understanding their joy.
So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person. However, not everyone can do this. During the research, the psychologists find people with some diseases can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
34.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The reason for smiling back. B.An opinion on smiling back.
C.The result of smiling back. D.An example of smiling back.

A.Because we want to talk with the person. B.Because we are feeling the person’s joy.
C.Because we want the person to understand us. D.Because we want to show we are clever.
36.What problems do people with some diseases have?
A.They can’t feel happy when others smile at them. B.They smile too much and can’t stop it.
C.They can’t copy others’ smiles. D.They never smile and they are unhappy.
37.Which could be the best title for this passage?

You may have already seen them in some restaurants around the world: robot waiters.
They are about the size of a child. They can welcome people and lead them to their tables. They can deliver (派送) food and drinks and bring dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Some have cat-like faces and even make noises when you scratch (挠) their heads. Are robot waiters the future? It is a question that the restaurant industry is trying to answer.
Many people think that robot waiters are the answer to worker shortages (短缺). Sales of robots have been growing in recent years. There are tens of thousands of them now moving through eating places worldwide.
“There is no doubt (怀疑) in my mind that this is where the world is going,” said Dennis Reynolds, head of the Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership at the University of Houston. The school’s restaurant began using a robot last year. Reynolds said that it has reduced the workload for humans and made service better.
However, others think that robot waiters still have a long way to go before they can replace humans. They cannot take orders. They cannot walk up the steps to different areas of a restaurant.
“Restaurants are pretty chaotic (混乱的) places, so it is very hard to add automation (自动化) in a way that is really helpful,” said Craig Le Clair from an advising company.
Still, the use of robots is growing. California-based Bear Robotics introduced its service robot in 2021. The company expects to sell more robots by the end of this year in America and overseas. In China, Shenzhen-based Pudu Robotics, which was founded in 2016, has deployed more than 56,000 robots worldwide.
42.What tasks can robot waiters do in restaurants according to the passage?
A.Take orders. B.Deliver food and drinks. C.Cook food. D.Mix drinks.
43.Why do many people think that robot waiters are helpful to worker shortages?
A.Because they can deal with money problems.
B.Because they can provide special customer service.
C.Because they can finish tasks well and reduce workload.
D.Because they can certainly take the place of human workers.
44.What does Dennis Reynolds think of robot waiters?
A.They will be popular in the future.
B.They provide worse service than humans.
C.They are not practical (实用的) in restaurant environments.
D.They are too expensive for most restaurants to afford.
45.What is the main idea of the passage?

C.Robot waiters will be better than humans in the future.
D.Robot waiters aren’t clever enough to be really helpful.

I (Robinson) showed him a pallet and a blanket and he fell quickly asleep. When waking up in the morning, he greeted me, down on his knees, with hands on his head. At first, we communicated primarily by body languages. Soon my new servant showed him much better at learning my language than I was learning at his. I studied him, and soon he could say his name, “Master”, “Yes” and “No”, and the names for various items. How good it was to hear a man’s voice again!
It took Friday time to grow used to the idea of hunting with a gun. I had to shoot several animals and birds before he stopped running away. For the next three years, I taught Friday how to use all my tools. Friday was quick to help with the farming and feeding. He worked hard and was obedient (服从).
One day, I took Friday to the highest point of the island where all the nearby islands could be seen. Suddenly, Friday began to jump up and down. He seemed quite excited with the sight of his own country. I began to think again about escape. Perhaps together we could leave for his country. But what then? Would Friday still be my friend, or would his people kill me and eat me? I took Friday to the other side of the island and showed him my big canoe, though it was quite old. “Could you imagine sailing to your country on it, Friday? Can it be a success?” I asked him. “Oh, yes,” he answered. “It can carry a lot of food and drink.”
But a moment later, Friday looked very upset. “Are you angry with me?” he asked. “What have I done? Why do you want to send me away?”
“But I thought you wanted to go home,” I said.
“Yes. But you must come with me. Kill me if you want, but don’t send me away from you!” He insisted that he would not leave me.

Do you feel sleepy on rainy days? If the answer is yes, you’re not a 61 . Many people feel the same way. But do you know why?
One of the r 62 is that there’s little sunshine on rainy days. Our brain will have less serotonin (血清素) and more melatonin (褪黑素) if there’s not e 63 sunlight. Serotonin helps us feel good, while melatonin makes us feel sleepy. As a result, we may want to go to s 64 .
The humidity (湿度) of a rainy day is a 65 reason. As it rains, the air becomes wetter than usual. It’s more difficult for our sweat (汗水) to dry in weather like this, so our body has to work h 66 to stay cool. This can make us feel tired.
Moreover, the s 67 of rain, a type of pink noise, will make us feel sleepy too. Like white noise, pink noise includes all the sound frequencies (频率) humans can hear, but it has fewer high frequencies t 68 white noise. This makes pink noise sound softer. Studies show that people’s brain waves (电波) will become fewer when they hear pink noise, so they’ll fall asleep more e 69 .
What can you do if you don’t like that feeling? Well, you can get as much natural light as possible and keep y 70 busy. Also, you can use a machine to make your room dry. In this way, you won’t feel sleepy any more.

35.Why do we smile back when we see someone else smile?
A.Because we want to talk with the person. B.Because we are feeling the person’s joy.
C.Because we want the person to understand us. D.Because we want to show we are clever.
36.What problems do people with some diseases have?
A.They can’t feel happy when others smile at them. B.They smile too much and can’t stop it.
C.They can’t copy others’ smiles. D.They never smile and they are unhappy.
37.Which could be the best title for this passage?
A.Why is smiling contagious? B.What’s World Smile Day?
C.Why should we smile? D.Do you know how to smile?
