Villains(反派角色) are some of the most memorable characters in films, but when we think of successful villains, they might show different features. In Star Wars, Emperor Palpatine is unable to understand others. It is not the same with Darth Vader, another bad guy in the movie-yet they are both clearly successful villains. The difference raises one question. ____1____
Firstly, a horrible personal look can help to create frightening villains. ____2____ For example, in Martin Scorsese’s films, villains with scars(疤痕) on their faces usually wear expensive suits while attacking people, which encourages audience to be afraid of their power.
Secondly, effective villains also have to test heroes in the story. ____3____ In Whiplash, the extremely strict jazz teacher never accepted any mistakes, and he often punished his students heavily. The hero, Andrew, one of his students with a strong will, was tested by having to face such a frightening villain again and again.
Here comes the last trick. ____4____ To become memorable and achieve a lasting place in filming history, a villain needs to have a purpose or motivation (动机). In Misery, the nurse Annie keeps her favorite writer, Paul, a prisoner. What’s her motivation? She wants him to rewrite his next chapter as she is unhappy with the ending of his latest work. ___5___
Next time you find yourself watching a villain onscreen, see which of these tricks have been used to make them particularly memorable!
A. They can’t just be beaten easily.
B. What makes a successful villain?
C Are villains really necessary in all films?
D. The film is well organized in terms of the storyline.
E. It’s necessary for a villain to be bad with a purpose.
F. This sense of fear can be achieved in different ways.
G. The screenwriter gave her a reason to move the story forward.
B 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. G
根据上一句“The difference raises one question. ”(这种差异引发了一个问题)可知,空处应该是一个问句,答案应该选自B或C;由第二、三、四段内容可知,这三段主要讲述了如何才能塑造一个成功的反派角色,是对选项B. What makes a successful villain?(是什么造就了一个成功的反派?)
根据上一句“Firstly, a horrible personal look can help to create frightening villains. ”(首先,一个可怕的个人外观可以帮助创造可怕的反派。)可知,给人一种可怕的感觉可以帮助塑造反派角色,选项F. This sense of fear can be achieved in different ways.(这种恐惧感可以通过不同的方式获得。)中的“This sense of fear”与其意思相符;下一句“For example, in Martin Scorsese’s films, villains with scars(疤痕) on their faces usually wear expensive suits while attacking people, which encourages audience to be afraid of their power.”(例如,在Martin Scorsese的电影中,脸上有伤疤的反派在攻击人时通常穿着昂贵的西装,这让观众对他们的力量感到恐惧。)
上一句“Secondly, effective villains also have to test heroes in the story. ”指出了“有效的反派也要考验故事中的英雄。”,选项A. They can’t just be beaten easily.(他们不可能被轻易打败)中的“They”指的就是“effective villiains”,是对上一句的引申说明;结合下文中的“The hero, Andrew, one of his students with a strong will, was tested by having to face such a frightening villain again and again.”(主人公Andrew是他的一个意志坚强的学生,他不得不一次又一次地面对这样一个可怕的恶棍。) 故选A。
根据下一句“To become memorable and achieve a lasting place in filming history, a villain needs to have a purpose or motivation (动机).”(要想让人印象深刻,并在电影史上占据一席之地,反派角色需要有目的或动机。),选项E. It’s necessary for a villain to be bad with a purpose.(反派必须是有目的的坏人。)
根据上一句“She wants him to rewrite his next chapter as she is unhappy with the ending of his latest work.”(她希望他重写下一章,因为她对他最新作品的结局不满意。),选项G. The screenwriter gave her a reason to move the story forward.(这个编剧给了她一个把故事向前推进的理由。)

A
The news of Chinese American actress Anna May Wong becoming the first Asian American to be featured on US currency—the quarter (25美分)—has been met with excitement and hope from the Asian American community.
Wong is one of five women being honored in the American Women Quarters Program, which seeks to stress the contributions of American women. As a minority(少数群体) woman, Wong fought bravely against the difficulties in life.
Wong was born to second-generation Taishanese Chinese American parents in Los Angeles, just one block north of Chinatown. She fell in love with films and acted at a young age. Wong was 14 when she played her first role as an extra in the film The Red Lantern. At age 17, Wong got her first leading role in The Toll of the Sea. However, despite her talents as an actress, Wong was often offered supporting roles of stereotypical(模式化的) Asian characters in films, such as a foreign slave girl or a “dragon lady”, a stereotype picturing Asian women as strong and dishonest.
Throughout her career, Wong always pushed for greater images(形象) of Asian American performers. Her hard work bore fruit. Wong was given the part of an important and kind Chinese American doctor in The King of Chinatown in 1939. When I was ten, my family moved to the other side of town. I was forced to leave the familiarity of St Paul’s and become “the new kid” at St Teresa’s:a one-hallway school with no gym, where the other kids in my class had been together since kindergarten. I struggled to break into the crowd and spent lunchtime playing alone.
One school day, when I headed to the kitchen table, I heard the radio, “It’s a sad day in the music world. Mr Roy Orbison has died.” Oh no, how sad, Roy Orbison has died. Wait. . . who is Roy Orbison?
I didn’t have a chance to ask I had to get to school before the bell.
It was Mr Hutchison’s class. Every day, he would ask if there was anyone we wanted to pray(祈祷) for. That day, Johnny prayed for his sick grandfather, and Emily for her grandmother who had a surgery.
This was my chance! Before I had time to fully think it through, my hand shot into the air. “I’d like to pray for Roy Orbison!”
Silence fell over the room. The other kids looked confused, but Mr Hutchison could see the eagerness in my eyes. No one else had ever been so excited to pray for anyone in his class.
“OK, Roy Orbison has been added to the prayer list.” He winked(眨眼)。
I did it! This must be another way we kids make new friends:you just pray for someone.
I had never met Roy Orbison, nor did I have his album. But because of Roy, a little girl named Christine came up to me and said, “I’m really sorry for your loss. If you’re not busy with the funeral(葬礼), maybe you can come over and play after school.”
Thanks to Roy and Christine, I was lonely no more.
5. Why did I pray for Roy Orbison?
A. Because I was a true fan of him. B. Because I felt sorry for his death
C. Because I needed a reason to be noticed D. Because I wanted to impress Mr Hutchison.
6. What happened after I prayed for Roy Orbison?
A. The whole class felt sad as I did. B. I made new friends at St Teresa’s.
C. Mr Hutchison turned a blind eye to me. D. Christine offered to enjoy Roy’s music with me.
7. What is the tone(语气)of the text??

C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C 9. B 10. A 11. B

In December 1994, a weight-loss movement was started, stating that obesity(肥胖) had become America’s second-largest cause of death, “resulting in about 300, 000 lives lost each year.” This marked the beginning of a long and influential life for the number. Experts began using the number to stress the seriousness of the problem. After ten years, the number had ballooned to nearly 400, 000 deaths caused by high weight, and it was expected to soon reach half a million. But these seemingly shocking numbers were then overturned(推翻) The number killer was Katherine Flegal.
Hoping to better understand the relationship between body size and death rate, Flegal led a study that finally showed something many scientists—and certainly the public—did not expect:the annual(每年的) deaths related to obesity added up to just more than 100, 000. More interesting still, people considered “overweight” could live longer than those who had “normal” weight. The study was met with a firestorm of doubt. “People were saying that our article was rubbish,” Flegal says. “Our findings produced controversy(争论) because someone wanted a controversy.”
“People are just more comfortable with a larger number—they prefer it to be larger,” Flegal says. And in nutrition science and medicine, that larger number is equal to the idea that thinner is better, skinnier is healthier. “You can report the same findings about obesity 100 times, and it can be called ‘unexpected’ every single time,” Flegal says. “At what point would you change your mind and say this might be the expected?”
“It’s human nature for people to find proof that supports their belief,” Caan, a breast cancer researcher says. “But we need to study where the data takes us.” Her own “unexpected findings” led to a discovery that could influence breast cancer patients:keeping muscle during treatment is far more important to survival than avoiding weight gain. “We can’t be stuck in what we thought was true,” Caan says, “because then we’re never going to move the field forward.”
9. In paragraph 1, the author lists numbers to ______.
A. call on people to lose weight B. draw experts’ attention to obesity
C. support the weight-loss movement D. introduce Flegal’s research background
10. What do we know about Flegal’s study?
A. It helped people to live a longer life. B. It lacked proof so that it caused doubt.
C. Its aim was to decide on normal weight ranges. D. Its findings were beyond people’s expectations.
11. What does “this” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. A point that changes our mind. B. A study about nutrition science.
C. The large number of deaths caused by obesity. D. The idea that thinner is better, skinnier is healthier
12. What can be inferred(推断) from Caan’s unexpected findings?
A. Breast cancer is related to body size. B. It is necessary to break limiting beliefs.
C. Losing weight matters to cancer patients. D. It is right to believe what we choose to believe.
D 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据文章最后一段““We can’t be stuck in what we thought was true,” Caan says, “because then we’re never going to move the field forward.”(我们不能拘泥于我们认为正确的东西,”Caan说,“因为那样我们就永远无法推动这个领域向前发展。”)”

Her role in that film was considered a breakthrough(突破)for Wong and other Asian American performers. “I’d like to pray for Roy Orbison!” Silence fell over the room. The other kids looked confused, but Mr Hutchison could see the eagerness in my eyes. No one else had ever been so excited to pray for anyone in his class. “OK, Roy Orbison has been added to the prayer list.” He winked(眨眼)。 I did it! This must be another way we kids make new friends:you just pray for someone. I had never met Roy Orbison, nor did I have his album. But because of Roy, a little girl named Christine came up to me and said, “I’m really sorry for your loss. If you’re not busy with the funeral(葬礼), maybe you can come over and play after school.” Thanks to Roy and Christine, I was lonely no more. 5. Why did I pray for Roy Orbison? A. C In December 1994, a weight-loss movement was started, stating that obesity(肥胖) had become America’s second-largest cause of death, “resulting in about 300, 000 lives lost each year.” This marked the beginning of a long and influential life for the number. “Our findings produced controversy(争论) because someone wanted a controversy.” “People are just more comfortable with a larger number—they prefer it to be larger,” Flegal says. And in nutrition science and medicine, that larger number is equal to the idea that thinner is better, skinnier is healthier. “You can report the same findings about obesity 100 times, and it can be called ‘unexpected’ every single time,” Flegal says. “At what point would you change your mind and say this might be the expected?” “It’s human nature for people to find proof that supports their belief,” Caan, a breast cancer researcher says. “But we need to study where the data takes us.” Her own “unexpected findings” led to a discovery that could influence breast cancer patients:keeping muscle during treatment is far more important to survival than avoiding weight gain. “We can’t be stuck in what we thought was true,” Caan says, “because then we’re never going to move the field forward.” 9. In paragraph 1, the author lists numbers to _. A. call on people to lose weight B. draw experts’ attention to obesity C. support the weight-loss movement D. introduce Flegal’s research background 10. D. The idea that thinner is better, skinnier is healthier 12. What can be inferred(推断) from Caan’s unexpected findings? A. Breast cancer is related to body size. B. It is necessary to break limiting beliefs. C. Losing weight matters to cancer patients. D. It is right to believe what we choose to believe.
