We've all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What's the problem? It's possible that we all don't have enough conversational ability. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's embarrassing and challenging, or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble.Experts say it's a valuable social practice that leads to big benefits.
It is easy to consider small talk as unimportant, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist (存在) if there weren't casual conversations.Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast.“Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains.“The secret to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people to a coffee shop. One group was asked to interact with its waiter, the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported obviously higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.“It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn.“But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network is important for our happiness and health.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging, a link with others.Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk.“Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.

4.What does the underlined word “casual” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Addictive. B.Public.
C.Personal. D.Informal.
解析:选D。词义猜测题。由画线词所在句“It is easy to consider small talk as unimportant, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist (存在) if there weren't casual conversations.(人们很容易认为闲聊不重要,但我们不能忘记,如果没有非正式的谈话,深层关系甚至不会存在)”可知,深层关系的存在是需要闲聊的,闲聊即“非正式的谈话”,因此画线词意为“非正式的”。故选D。
5.What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?
A.Showing good manners.
B.Making business deals.
C.Focusing on a topic.
D.Keeping in contact with other people.
解析:选D。细节理解题。根据第三段的“The secret to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.(成功闲聊的秘诀是学会如何与他人建立联系,而不仅仅是与他们交流)”可知,Carducci认为,与他人建立联系对成功的闲聊很重要。故选D。
6.What does the coffeeshop study suggest about small talk?
A.It raises people's confidence.
B.It makes people feel good.
C.It improves family relationships.
D.It matters as much as a formal talk.

7.What is the best title for the text?
A.Conversation Counts
B.Ways of Making Small Talk
C.Importance of Small Talk
D.Uncomfortable Silence

(2025·昆明高一检测)Ong uyan madongo? You probably don't know how to answer this question—unless you happen to be one of the nearly 430 people in the world who speak a language called Matukar Panau. Then you would know it means “How are you?”
Matukar Panau is one of the world's rarest languages. It is spoken in just two small coastal villages in Papua New Guinea. With so few speakers, the language is vanishing and endangered. It has so few speakers that its words soon may never be spoken or heard again.David Harrison, a language expert at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, together with his teammates, didn't want that to happen to Matukar Panau. So they set out for Papua New Guinea.Their goal: use modern technology to help the remaining speakers preserve their native tongue.
They interviewed native speakers and to their surprise, the locals replied with excitement and said, “The language is important for our identity (身份认同).” These villagers even knew the Internet existed. They also knew it was a powerful tool for learning and sharing information. So these people wanted to use the Internet to help them.
Together with the scientists, these villagers created a “talking dictionary”.This online resource provides translations between English and Matukar Panau and also includes the pronunciations, so users can listen to the correct pronunciation of each word.
That same year, electricity and the Internet reached those coastal villages. For many, a first stop on the Internet was the “talking dictionary” they had helped create. It now includes more than 4,000 words and 171 photos that help explain those words.
“The first time they saw the Internet, they could hear the voices of their elders and see them speaking their language,” Harrison said. The moment was powerful because it showed these villagers “their language is just as good as any other.”

(2025·长沙高一检测)For more than 20 years I have been traveling the world, preferring often to spend a year or two in different countries rather than to just visit as a tourist. It has become an important part of my personality as I grew older and shaped the way I saw the world and myself.
My little taste of this amazing life was when I was 19 years old.I was selected among a small group of college classmates to spend a year abroad. This was long before people could travel the world through social media like Facebook and Twitter. In order to see a place, you had to go there and experienced it.
I was raised in a middleclass family and couldn't afford to travel around the world the way I wished I could. The only way I knew about the world outside was through letters I wrote to pen pals from over a dozen countries as a kid, and from television.Growing up, I always loved the very funny British comedies that were shown on local public television every Saturday night. So when I got the chance to apply for a study abroad program, I chose London.
Living abroad can be exciting, scary and challenging.I thought it would be easier because I spoke the same language as the local people did.But I also like to relish (享受) the little differences between the British and American culture and language.I also learned that in England, they spell words differently than in the U.S.In British spelling, they put a “u” in words like favor to make it “favour” and an “s” in words like analyze to make it “analyse”.I was able to adapt quickly to this new way of writing since I was submitting papers all the time for my classes.
Academically, I got to take classes that weren't offered at my college back home. For example, I had a course in sociology and learned about the native people of Papua New Guinea.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
But there were also challenges that year too.
Sometimes the difficult times made me sad and homesick.

But there were also challenges that year too.One of my classes was called “Europe Since 1870”.In the U.S., I would have expected an introductory history class, but in England, I was supposed to have already known the history. Now was the time to analyze it.That meant I not only had to learn the history as I went along but also had to try to write a paper explaining why certain events happened as they did.Despite this, I don't regret anything about my time in London.Even through painful experiences, I learn to grow.
