Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson was surprised. When he came to New York to study photography five years ago, he found a large collection of images of life in Africa in the city’s libraries and museums. Here he was thousands of miles from Ghana, surrounded by more visual history of Africa than he had ever seen back home.
That inspired him to create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring the African story home, allowing people to learn about their history and give them tools to tell new stories of the continent. It has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Dikan means “take the lead” in the Akan language.
This isn’t the only time Ninson set his sights on a seemingly impossible dream. Photography isn’t exactly valued as a career path in Ghana. Ninson says, “If you tell your parents you’re going to be a photographer, it was like, ‘What? Go be a lawyer.’” But Ninson felt photography was his calling. He was deeply influenced by the rich family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents and later, attracted by a friend’s images, developed a love of photography. It felt natural to combine the two, so he dove in. With great determination, he managed to collect more than 30,000 volumes. In December 2022, the Dikan Center opened.
Ghanaian Daniella Afful was particularly moved by Dikan’s exhibition, and said it gave her a new viewpoint on her country’s past and present. She said, “Dikan has made art and photography more significant. It has given us the hope that we may soon have a music library in Ghana. We could have a film library in Ghana — anything just to preserve our history and make history.”
4. What surprised Paul Ninson in New York?
A. Many pictures about Africa. B. Historical photography exhibits.
C. Video materials about Ghana. D. Photography training courses.
5. Why did Ninson create the Dikan Center in Ghana?
A. To spread African culture globally. B. To improve people’s living conditions.
C. To offer Africans insights into their roots. D. To develop photobook market in Ghana.
6. Why did Ninson choose to tell stories with photographs?
A. It was quite popular in Ghana. B. His parents encouraged him to do so.
C. He was influenced by his family and friend. D. He used to study photography in New York.
7. What does Daniella Afful think of Dikan’s exhibition?
A. Challenging. B. Entertaining. C. Astonishing. D. Inspiring.

In the animal world, speed is king. Fast animals have a leg up in outrunning other animals, which puts them high on the food chain. It would seem that all animals would go for speed, but then there’s the sloth (树懒). While a lion can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only five seconds, it takes a sloth all day to cover no more than 50 meters.
Sloths live entirely in trees on a diet of leaves. And for this, they are extremely rare. While most of the land world is covered in trees, there are very few vertebrates (脊椎动物) that call the tree home. The aim of a 2016 study, says Jonathan Pauli, a University of Alabama professor of forest and wildlife ecology, was to help uncover why sloths are indeed so unique. “Among vertebrates, this is the rarest of lifestyles”, says Pauli. “When you picture animals that live off plant leaves, they are almost all big-things like deer. What’s super interesting about sloths is that they can’t be big.”
For their research, Pauli and his Wisconsin team studied wild sloths at a field site. When the researchers measured the energy use of sloths, they found a wildly low burning of as little as 110 calories of energy a day. And for this, they take the cake: it is the lowest measured energetic output for any mammal
“The measurement was intended to find out what it cost sloths to live over a day,”says Pauli, who adds that a diet of little but leaves lacks nutritional value and the animal’s small size doesn’t allow for overeating-so sloths need to find ways to make the most of their diets, which means using tiny amounts of energy, dramatic control of body temperature and living at an extremely slow pace.
Their reward? A wonderfully widespread ecological system to call their own, one slow inch at a time.
8. Why is a lion mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To admire lions’ speed. B. To state sloths’ weakness.
C. To confirm lions’ lead position. D. To highlight sloths’ uniqueness.
9. What is the 2016 study mainly about?
A. The lifestyle of sloths. B. The diet of vertebrates.
C. The species of rare animals. D. The energy use of creatures.
10. What does the underlined part “take the cake” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Break down. B. Keep on. C. Stand out. D. Grow up.
11. What can be inferred about sloths from Pauli’s words?
A. Their slow pace is a balanced choice.
B. They are in face of possible extinction.
C. Their slow pace decides a tiny appetite.
D. They suffer a lot against natural enemies.
D
“You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.
Parents who make comments linking their children’s performance to personal characteristics like intelligence are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were assessed in two waves across a year to measure their math motivation and achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts rather than their intelligence or other personal characteristics. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children give a combination of both responses. While responses highlighting strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics -- in particular, related to failure -- are more likely to avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to enhance motivation.
12. Which of the following is an example of process response?
A. You are a lucky dog. B. Running is in your blood.
C. What works well for your study? D. Why are you such a math genius?
13. What can be inferred from the study results?
A. Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
C. Process responses help with children’s math achievement.
D. Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
14. What do researchers advise parents to do?
A. Restrict person responses. B. Defend their own beliefs.
C. Stress children’s performance. D. Ignore children’s math problems.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Strategy Children Adopt to Learn Math Helps
B. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters
C. Responses to Enhance Children’s Math Performance
D. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math

Make Time to Write
Since a new year has started, time lies before us like a blank page, waiting to be filled with writing. We are all busy people, and we sometimes feel that life is working against our writing ambitions and pushing them aside. Yet the most productive writers are the busiest. ____16____
Overcoming self-doubt and fear is the key to unlocking your potential. ____17____ Most of the time, the real reason why we avoid writing is that we’re afraid of failing. It’s simpler to complain about being too busy than to face our fears. To solve this problem, we can try to understand what we’re scared of, deal with it, and then focus on moving forward.
A simple way to find more time to write is to give yourself a clear goal. It needs to be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. ____18____ If you successfully meet your target, you could give yourself a small reward: buy a new notebook or pen, go for a long walk, or take a day off from writing and just do something completely different.
____19____ As Henry Ford once said, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got”! This could mean writing with a notebook and pen rather than the computer you also use for work. Try varying your approach and see if it helps.
Above all, you should prioritize writing over other things. Most successful writers have caring responsibilities, occupations outside the home, and the necessary everyday tasks they all need to complete. Yet they still manage to write. ____20____ So, if you want to make 2025 the year when you get your writing project done, look at how you use your time with a fresh eye.
A. Then how can we make sure we get our writing done in 2025?
B. So do we need to pursue writing to improve our mental health?
C. For example, writing 1,500 words in a week might be realistic.
D. Do something different if your current approach isn’t working.
E. What they have in common is that they treat writing as important.
F. Sitting in front of your computer doesn’t mean the writing will flow.
G. We all have a voice in our head that keeps telling us we can’t succeed.

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.

Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson was surprised. When he came to New York to study photography five years ago he found a large collection of images of life in Africa in the city’s libraries and museums.
D. Inspiring.
A 5. C 6. C 7. D

D 9. A 10. C 11. A

根据第一段中“Fast animals have a leg up in outrunning other animals, which puts them high on the food chain. It would seem that all animals would go for speed, but then there’s the sloth (树懒). While a lion can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only five seconds, it takes a sloth all day to cover no more than 50 meters.(速度快的动物比其他动物跑得快,这使它们处于食物链的高位。似乎所有的动物都追求速度,但树懒除外。狮子可以在5秒内从0英里跑到60英里每小时,而树懒需要一整天才能走超过50米。)”可知,似乎所有的动物都追求速度,但树懒除外,由此文章指出狮子可以在5秒内从0英里跑到60英里每小时,而树懒需要一整天才能走超过50米,此处提到了狮子的速度,与接下来讲述树懒的缓慢相对比,从而强调树懒的独特之处。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The aim of a 2016 study, says Jonathan Pauli, a University of Alabama professor of forest and wildlife ecology, was to help uncover why sloths are indeed so unique. (阿拉巴马大学森林和野生动物生态学教授Jonathan Pauli表示,2016年一项研究的目的是帮助揭示树懒确实如此独特的原因。)”以及““Among vertebrates, this is the rarest of lifestyles”, says Pauli. (“在脊椎动物中,这是最罕见的生活方式,” Pauli说。)”可知,2016年一项研究的目的是为了揭示树懒生活方式为什么如此独特。故选A。
根据划线词前面的内容“Wisconsin team studied wild sloths at a field site. When the researchers measured the energy use of sloths, they found a wildly low burning of as little as 110 calories of energy a day. (威斯康辛州的一个研究小组在野外研究了野生树懒。当研究人员测量树懒的能量消耗时,他们发现树懒每天燃烧的能量非常低,只有110卡路里。)”以及划线词后面的内容“it is the lowest measured energetic output for any mammal(这是所有哺乳动物中测量到的能量输出最低的。)”
根据倒数第二段““The measurement was intended to find out what it cost sloths to live over a day,”says Pauli, who adds that a diet of little but leaves lacks nutritional value and the animal’s small size doesn’t allow for overeating-so sloths need to find ways to make the most of their diets, which means using tiny amounts of energy, dramatic control of body temperature and living at an extremely slow pace.( “这次测量的目的是找出树懒在一天中生活所需的成本,”Pauli说道,他补充说,只吃树叶的饮食缺乏营养价值,而树懒的体型小,不允许过度进食,所以树懒需要找到方法来最大限度地利用自己的饮食,这意味着使用极少的能量、极大地控制体温和以非常缓慢的步调生活。)” 故选A。
In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中“In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.(相比之下,将孩子行为(如努力或策略的使用)与他们的表现联系起来的父母正在使用过程反应。)”
根据倒数第二段中“While responses highlighting strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics -- in particular, related to failure -- are more likely to avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.(虽然强调策略和努力的回答与任何成绩结果无关,但收到更多关于个人特征(特别是与失败有关的)回答的孩子更有可能避免更难的数学问题,表现出更高的数学焦虑水平,在数学成绩测试中得分更低。)”
根据最后一段中“Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home.(因为个人反应预示着孩子随着时间的推移会有较差的数学适应能力,研究人员建议父母在家里限制这种反应。)”
通读整篇文章,尤其是第一段中“Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.(最近,乔治亚大学进行的一项新研究发现,随着时间的推移,鼓励孩子用与他们的个人特征或天生能力相关的回答可能会削弱他们的数学动机和成就。)” 所以B项“The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters(父母与孩子谈论数学问题的方式)”可作为最恰当的题目,故选B。

A 17. G 18. C 19. D 20. E

Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.

Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!(96词)
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.(100词)
