You don’t have to be an adult to make an invention. Some kids are very creative and they use their creativity to invent new things. In the following passage, we will introduce some young yet great inventors.
One winter day in 1994, 10-year-old Kathryn Gregory was outside playing with snow with her younger brother. She felt her wrists (手腕) started to hurt because they were cold and wet. To solve this problem, she invented Wristies. Later, Kathry n started Wristies, a company to make and sell Wristies. Now, people also wear Wristies while practicing the guitar, or while sending text messages in cold weather.
Another one was Louis Braille, who was blind in both eyes. In 1819, Braille attended one of the world’s first schools for blind children, he learned about a silent communication method created by the French army for the blind. But it was still hard for him to write. Braille developed his own system using a series of raised dots (点) called Braille, which is shorter and easier for the touch system. Today, people with eye problems still use Braille to read and write.
In 1996, a 10-year-old boy named Richie Stachowski invented something called the Water Talkie. Richie was just a fifth-grade r when he came up with this cool device that lets people talk to each other under water. Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August 2022, driver-less taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving cars?
Self-driving cars bring us lots of good. They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of cars. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.
According to official reports, each year, more than 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world, and more are hurt. It’s reported that self-driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90 percent and save governments a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human error (错误). By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose focus like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars wouldn’t see the lines on the road easily. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system would be broken by someone, causing it to crash or change its direction.
It’s clear that there is still a long way to go to make self-driving cars a common and safe sight (景象) on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen, said China Daily.

What would you do if your best friend and you disagree with each other? Karina is my best friend. When we first met in a camp, we both felt that we’d be friends forever. So it was hard to imagine that I would disagree with her on some things. Whatever we did, we were always together. And the more we spent together, the more we found we were surprisingly like each other.
But then something happened in another summer camp. One day, Karina, Linda, Tyler and I talked happily under a tree. “Have you heard about the shopping-mall news?” asked Linda, “They want to cut down some trees to make the shopping center.”
“That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.”
“I don’t think so,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really need work.”
“But think of all the birds that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
“Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important?” Karina asked.
“Maybe two people with opposite ideas just aren’t meant to be friends,” I was thinking. I felt so mad that I even turned my head away from her, not wanting to talk anymore.
Just then, Linda jumped up and broke the silence. “Let’s see who can do the roundhouse (回旋) kick!” Tyler did first, Karina followed, and I finally joined them. Soon, we all laughed and enjoyed ourselves.
After that day, even though I wished Karina could agree with me about saving the trees, I began to realize that even best friends disagree sometimes. What’s important is that we should respect (尊重) each other.

Wash your jeans less, please!
Think about what you like to wear on the weekend. There’s a good chance that you like to put on a pair of blue jeans. At any moment, about half of the world’s population is wearing jeans.
But according to a new study, our love for jeans may be bad for the earth. Denim (牛仔布) might be putting some sea animals in danger.
Every time we wash our jeans, tiny bits of denim come loose. They flow out of our washing machines, down the drain and into the world’s rivers, lakes and oceans.
You might wonder: Isn’t denim made of cotton, a natural material? How can it become a danger to nature? Well, in the process of making jeans, cotton fibers (纤维) are treated with many types of man-made chemicals. Some improve the fibers’ durability (耐用性) and feel; others give jeans their blue color.
Scientists studied the Great Lakes in America and the Arctic Ocean in northern Canada. They found denim waste in all of the samples (样本) they had collected. It is feared that the harmful chemicals in denim have spread far and wide. Scientists aren’t yet sure how these chemicals might harm animals.
In the study, the scientists also washed jeans to see how many bits of denim on average each pair would drop per wash. The answer was alarming: about 50,000. Not all of them make their ways into the environment. Wastewater treatment plants hold back 83 to 99 percent of them. This may sound pretty good. However, one percent of 50,000 bits are still 500 per wash. Now think about the number of jeans around the world and the times each of them gets washed. As a result, a large amount of denim waste still gets dumped (被甩) into the environment.
Does this mean we shouldn’t wear jeans? Probably not. “We need to buy fewer clothes and only wash them when we truly need to do it.” says Sam Athey, one of the scientists. “You don’t need to wash your jeans after having worn them only a couple of times.”

But then something happened in another summer camp. One day, Karina, Linda, Tyler and I talked happily under a tree. “Have you heard about the shopping-mall news?” asked Linda, “They want to cut down some trees to make the shopping center.”

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company that began in 2023, has quickly become well-known around the world for its technology that is free for everyone to use. 71 In less than two years, it surprised the technology world. Its AI tools work faster and cost less than many foreign products. The founder, Liang Wenfeng, first worked in a company (公司) to make a living but later decided to learn AI with 140 young Chinese talents.
72 Unlike other AI tools, users don’t need to pay when using them. It uses a sharing method to make AI available to everyone and reduce the AI gap (鸿沟). The team thinks AI should be free to help all people. For example, their technology helps doctors find diseases early and 73 Also, they pay special attention to human new ideas and how people and AI can work together. “AI should help people do things better, not take their place,” says a DeepSeek engineer.
Another reason for their success is their excellent team. 74 Most team members finished their studies at the Chinese top universities. They were well trained and educated in China. This has encouraged many Chinese students to believe they can also be leaders in AI.
However, some experts give a warning: AI development needs worldwide rules to make it under control. If countries like China and the US only try to compete with each other instead of working together, 75 The world needs to learn from DeepSeek’s example to make AI safe and useful for all people.
A.it also helps teachers in preparing lessons.
B.It received tons of users in a short time.
C.What makes DeepSeek different?
D.AI might become dangerous.
E.China’s education can help to develop excellent AI talents.
F.They’re looking for ways to use AI to create more job opportunities in new fields.

【答案】71.B 72.C 73.A 74.E 75.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了DeepSeek的发展情况、成功原因以及专家对人工智能发展的警示。
71.根据空前“DeepSeek...has quickly become well-known around the world...”和空后“In less than two years, it surprised the technology world”可知此处缺一个既能体现其知名又能体现其发展速度之快的句子,所以B选项“在短时间内获得了大量用户”更符合语境。故选B。
72.根据空后“Unlike other AI tools, users need to pay when using them. It...make AI available to everyone...”可知此处缺一个能引出Deepseek与众不同的问句,作为段落主旨,所以C选项“什么让DeepSeek与众不同?”更符合语境。故选C。
73.根据空前“The team thinks AI should be free to help all people. For example, their technology helps doctors find diseases early and...”可知此处需要补充AI帮助不同人群的具体例子,和“帮助医生”形成并列,所以A选项“它也帮助老师备课”更符合语境。故选A。
74.根据空前的“excellent team”和空后的“Most team members finished their studies at the Chinese top universities.”可知此处需要一个衔接“优秀团队”和“中国教育培养”的句子,所以E选项“中国的教育能帮助培养优秀的AI 人才”更符合语境。故选E。
75.根据空前“If countries like China and the US only try to compete with each other instead of working together,”可知此处缺一个无管控或者不合作会导致AI有风险的句子,也回应了后面的“The world needs to...make AI safe and useful for all people.”所以D选项“AI 可能变得危险”更符合语境。故选D。
三、阅读表达(共10小题,计20分)
A. 完成图表(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
