In the last passage we’ve already talked about some dangerous plants, but we don’t want to give anyone the wrong idea. The truth is that some plants can hurt you, but most are completely harmless. In fact, there are plenty of plants that are actually very useful to humans.
That is why plants are so popular in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine has been using plants for at least 4,800 years. One of the most popular plants in Chinese medicine is ginseng (人参). Doctors of Chinese medicine believe that ginseng can help your lungs (肺), clean your blood and do many other things. Ginseng also provides energy for people. In fact, many modern energy drinks that you see in stores have ginseng.
In some parts of the U.S., there is a plant called lady fern (蹄盖蕨). This is the plant you need if you’ve been stung by a bee, or if you’ve got a small burn or a cut. Lady ferns are great for making your skin feel better. All you have to do is roll one of its leaves and make it into pieces in your hands. The juice inside the leaf will help your skin feel better.
If you’re hiking in Europe, look for a flower called tansy (艾菊). This yellow flower is a natural insects’ enemy. You just rub it on your skin, and insects will leave you alone.
Sage (鼠尾草) is one of the most useful plants in the world. Because it has so many uses, it’s also quite valuable. Human beings have been using sage for a very long time. In Europe before fridges appeared, people used sage to keep food. Over the years, people have used sage to fight all kinds of health problems. Sage has been used to treat colds, stop muscle problems and reduce swelling. In fact, sage comes from the Latin word “salvere”, which means “to be saved”.
31.How many kinds of useful plants are mentioned in the passage?
A.2 B.3 C.4 D.5
32.Which of the following about ginseng is NOT TRUE?
A.It can be found in many modern energy drinks.
B.It’s still being used in Chinese medicine.
C.It is helpful to our lungs and blood.
D.It can make people feel relaxed.
33.Lady ferns can be used to treat the following EXCEPT ________.
A.a bee sting B.a small burn C.a little cut D.a mild cold
34.What does the passage say about sage?
A.It’s the most useful plant in the world.
B.It hasn’t been used by people for long.
C.It was once used to keep food in Europe.
D.Its name comes from a German word.
35.What will the next paragraph most probably talk about?
A.How modern medicine is better than Chinese medicine that uses plants.
B.How to grow useful plants like ginseng and sage in home gardens.
C.Why some dangerous plants can still be found in forests.
D.More examples of plants that are useful to humans.

“How was your weekend?” “Did you see the game on TV last night?” “Isn’t the weather beautiful today?” These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk” — the short, friendly talk that people have with friends and partners.
Some people avoid (避免) making small talk at work. They think they shouldn’t talk about things that aren’t important for the job, or their partners will think they aren’t serious about their work. And some people just don’t enjoy talking about themselves.
But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you are friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don’t make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you’re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager (经理) at the Apex Company in the USA, says, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate (交流) with each other and with our customers (客户).”
Here are some tips (提示) for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs, and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don’t share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too. But avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at making small talk!
36.To begin the passage, how many examples of “small talk” does the writer give?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
37.What is Para. 2 mainly about?
A.Why dome people don’t make small talk.
B.Why some people don’t trust their partners.
C.How some people learn to be serious about their work.
D.How some people realize the importance of sharing their ideas.
38.Which of the following will Peter Harper probably agree with?
A.Most customers like small talk.
B.A good listener doesn’t need to ask questions.
C.If a person is good at communicating, he can be a good worker.
D.Good managers should often make small talk with their workers.
39.According to the text, which of the following is OK for small talk?
A.“How old are you?” B.“Why did your parents argue yesterday?”
C.“Who is your favorite actor?” D.“How much money did you get last month?”
40.What is the structure of the text? (P-Paragraph)

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends?
41 They are “pest friends” “guest friends” and “best friends”.
The first kind of friends is simply an acquaintance (熟人). All you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friends at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. 42 That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friends could also be called “social partners”. 43 You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories. You usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears, and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friends, the “best friends”, is the one you know the deepest. 44 You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. Sometimes they may not be perfect, but at least they will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose to hurt you.
45 We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.
A.You have to keep secrets to yourself.
B.There are three different kinds of friends.
C.They will help you with your life problems.
D.We all have our pest, guest and best friends.
E.You’re like family, and know everything about each other.
