As time passed, the first seed grew and became tall. His roots went deep into the soil. He grew taller and soon had pretty flowers. The flowers were bright, and people passing by stopped to look. They liked the plant because it was beautiful. On the other hand, the second seed did not grow because of his negative attitude. “The ground is too hard,” he thought. “What if my sprouts break? What if something bad happens?” So, he stayed in the soil, waiting for the “right time” to grow. One day, the growing plant asked the little one, “Why don’t you grow? It’s been years since the farmers planted both of us. If you need any help, please let me know. I would be happy to help you.” But the little one replied, “If I send my roots into the ground below, I don’t know what I will meet in the dark. And if I open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe.” Then, one day, a hen and her chicks wandered and looked for food. They found the waiting seed and they ate it. This story teaches us an important lesson. If we want to grow and do well, we must take risks and be brave. Can you imagine a robot that is like both of them? A group of scientists from a Chinese university has made a really smart spiral (螺旋形) soft robot arm. This arm is almost as good as the human hand when it comes to picking up different things. Some videos showing how it works have been put out. In these videos you can see the tentacle-like robot arm do amazing things. It can easily pick up fragile things like glass, eggs, and strawberries without breaking them. It can also catch a fast-moving tennis ball quickly and hit a ping-pong ball accurately. The scientists, led by Nikolaos Freris from the University of Science and Technology of China, used a method called reverse engineering (逆向工程). They copied the flexible structures that look like spirals in nature. The robot system, called SpiRobs, which was made by learning from nature, can do very skillful movements to pick things up, such as reeling in, stretching out, winding around and grabbing things. According to a study published in the magazine Device, it has a success rate of nearly 95 percent. The spiral gripper (抓手), which has a 15-degree conical angle, is moved by two or three cables. It can pick up much larger things and can carry things that are 260 times heavier than itself, the study says. Also, the team used 3D printing to make models of different sizes, from centimeters to meters. They used cheap materials like polyurethane, resin and paper. This makes it more likely that these robots can be sold in the future. In a test outside, a robot arm fixed on a drone (无人机) was able to skillfully grab and lift a water bucket. This shows that it might be useful in the low-altitude economy area in the future. 37.How does the writer start the passage? A.By giving examples.B.By asking questions.C.By comparing differences. D.By listing numbers. 38.What can we infer from the passage? A.The robot arms are not suitable for picking up heavy things. B.The robot arms will be seen in many different fields in life. C.The robot arms will replace human hands completely in the future. D.The robot arms can do many movements like spirals in nature. 39.What’s the author’s attitude towards the spiral soft robot arm? A.Doubtful. B.Uncertain. C.Disappointed. D.Supportive. 40.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The future development of the drones. B.The use of 3D printing in making robot arms. C.The introduction of a smart spiral soft robot arm. One of them wanted to grow fast and wished to touch the sky as soon as possible, while the second seed was afraid to open its buds. He thought if he grew, then a snail would eat him. Many people say that it’s the printing press (印刷机) that allows us to print copies or books. Why is the printing press so important in human history? As a result, usually only a small part of the people learned to read and owned books. In 1450, Johannes Gutenberg from Germany invented the modern printing press. The effect of his machine is sometimes compared to the invention of the Internet. Gutenberg’s printing press was easy to use with languages such as English that had alphabetic (字母的) words. After 1450, thousands of copies of a popular book or newspaper could be made quickly and cheaply. Books and newspapers with ideas and images from all over the world went into the market for the wide public. Reading has brought about amazing changes in science and technology. We’ve learned how to create wealth (财富) and even travel to far places. Computers, mobile phones, because millions of readers were created by the printing press. B.When the first modern printing press was invented. C.What the first modern printing press looked like. D.Why reading books is more and more popular around the world. D Do you have any idea how flexible (灵活的) elephant trunks and octopus tentacles (章鱼触手) are? A.Doubtful. B.Uncertain. C.Disappointed. D.Supportive. 40.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The future development of the drones. B.The use of 3D printing in making robot arms.
