The paint included materials collected from natural disasters, such as ash from wildfires and mud from floods. Mundano hoped to draw global attention to climate change, as extreme weather events have been causing destruction across Brazil. The large mural — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide — shows the gray remains of trees on a brown land that is dry and cracked, representing the deforestation (滥伐森林) and serious drought in the Amazon rainforest. The mural also shows local activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says: “Stop the destruction, keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a US-based soybean (大豆) producer. Soy farming is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon. Cargill says it will end deforestation in its supply chain in Brazil by 2025. Mundano is seeking to hold the company responsible for that promise. In recent months, human-caused wildfires have severely damaged protected places in the Amazon area. Smoke spread over a very large area and affected the air quality in some Brazilian cities. Drought has caused a terrible situation nationwide. On October 22, the depth of the Amazon's Negro River measured (测量) 12.46 meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago. But this last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date in earlier years. Earlier this year, a flood in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul killed more than 180 people, affected over 2 million people, and destroyed city communities. Mundano used mud from that flood to create the mural, ashes from Brazil's fires in the Atlantic Forest, and clay from an Amazon village where Alessandra Korap is from. “From floods to droughts, everything is connected!” Mundano said in an interview. 1.What makes the mural unique?( ) A.Its size. B.Its paint. C.Its colors. D.Its audience. 2.Why does Mundano include Alessandra Korap in his mural?( ) A.To push Cargill to honor its promise. B.To celebrate Brazil's natural beauty. C.To draw attention to global warming. D.To show the importance of soybeans. 3.What can we learn about the Negro River?( ) A.A flood here took over 180 lives. B.Its depth hit a record low on Oct.22. C.It was 6.46m deep 122 years ago. D.It has suffered greatly from drought. 4.What is implied in Mundano's actions and words in the last paragraph?( ) A.Climate disasters are closely related. B.The Amazon is home to great civilizations. C.Natural materials are perfect for painting. D.Floods and droughts are the worst disasters. B Most artwork displayed in a typical art gallery includes beautiful landscapes and people as we're drawn to beautiful things. Artwork that does not fit typical beauty standards is reserved for terrible themes, existing only to remind us of the terrible parts of life that we prefer not to think about. The University's Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) exhibited“Beyond Beauty”, an exhibition showcasing artwork that does not fit the “perfect” beauty standards of other art. Preconceived (先入为主的) views of art and beauty are what “Beyond Beauty” seeks to change by surrounding visitors with uncomfortable descriptions of the human condition. Each piece describes humans as less-than-perfect in the traditional sense, with the collection including the “ugly side” of society like interpretations of death and social ills, and has an enormous power, producing strong emotional responses. Some artists are found not to steer clear of the depressing themes of modern society and museums rarely choose. One striking work displayed in the exhibition is “Constellated in Brief and Darkly” by printmaker Rosemarie Bernardi, which shows deep insight into the realities of medical practice and stimulates conversation around the complex and painful theme of congenital (先天性的) abnormality. The development of“Beyond Beauty” started with the installation of a clown (小丑) painting. Visitors were forced to consider a colorful, unconventional painting alongside old master artworks. The MAG received comments from visitors who suggested keeping the terrible art away from their beloved traditional landscapes. Others found the painting to be engaging, which improved their museum experience. Now, Condo's “The Clown” sits in the front of the exhibition, welcoming visitors in. After this visit, they may consider “ugliness” not as something to be rejected, but something that is to be welcomed. As today's society sets impossible beauty standards, it's as important as ever to remember beauty does not exist in just one form, and public views of “ugly” do not tell the whole story. Without the inclusion of the “ugly” side, we lose the descriptions that define entire groups of people and time periods. 1.What is the feature of artworks in the exhibition?( ) A.They are completed imperfectly. B.They show negative aspects of humanity. C.They fit preconceived views of art. D.They focus on the unnoticeable social ills. 2.What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of” mean in paragraph 3?( ) A.Appreciate. B.Understand. C.Avoid. D.Criticize. 3.What can be known about the clown painting?( ) A.It is from an old master. B.It receives mixed reviews. C.It sets a new standard for art. D.It is about society's problems. 4.What does the author say about ugliness?( ) A.It takes several different forms. B.Welcoming it is simple for the public. C.It is more common than beauty. D.The general opinion on it is one-sided. 六、七选五 A new art form that was distinctly American arose during the 1890s: the comic strip (连环漫画). To heighten its comedic effects, a sleeping character was sometimes needed. 1.___ How to visually convince the audience that a character was asleep, instead of merely lying down? Visually and dynamically — crucial aspects for comics — portraying silent stillness isn't easy. To solve this challenge, artists experimented with various techniques: facial expressions, sleeping poses, and even sounds like snoring (鼾声).2.___To translate the noisy act of snoring into visual language, early attempts relied on a mix of creative representations. These often took the form of letter combinations resembling snoring, such as zzggrrhh or z-z-c-r-r-k-k-k-k, or symbolic elements like stars and musical notes.3.___ Its first documented use dates back to 1903 in Rudolph Dirks' comic Katzenjammer Kids, where a snoring captain sleeps peacefully in his hammock (吊床), letting out Zzz. 4.___ In 1918, the American Dialect Society defined “z-z-z” as the “sound of whispering or snoring”, and by the 1940s, the phrase “catch some Z's” entered popular usage, which is a clear proof of Zzz's widespread acceptance as the universal marker of sleep. 5.___ German, for example, uses chrr, and Japanese uses characters that sound like guu-guu. Chinese, meanwhile uses hu-lu. Though the regional onomatopoeia (拟声词) varies, Zzz has made its mark; it's recognized internationally as a symbol for sleep. A.It most likely originated in media fields. B.This failed to achieve the expected effect. C.Further evidence solidified its dominance. D.The final solution was to highlight the sound. E.But comic artists ran into an interesting difficulty. F.Eventually, one representation stuck: the letters Zzz. G.Many languages have their own representations besides Zzz. 参考答案 一、认可;识别;输入,录入;参赛作品;拒绝;下降,减少 二、to expand;to purchase;permanently;to enjoy;Listed;has been exhibited;criticism;recognized;representative;from 三、distinguished;which;Similarly;artists;the;to;to transform;proving;are admired;remains 四、a;Introduced;appeared;which;Making;is fired;elegant;as;to survive;creation 五、BADA BCBD 六、EDFCG ( 1 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
