He was a Canadian doctor. He came to China to help the Chinese people and died for them. Norman Bethune was born in 1890. He became a doctor in 1916 and went to Spain in 1936 to treat the wounded soldiers during the war there. He soon realised that many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly enough. Dr Bethune developed new ways of taking care of the sick. He invented special medical tools to use outside hospitals and close to the fighting areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more quickly. His inventions saved many lives. In 1938, Dr Bethune came to China and helped treat the wounded during the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. At that time, there were few doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own. His experience of treating people in Spain was useful in China. He developed training courses for local doctors and nurses, and wrote books so that they could learn about how he treated the sick. Dr Bethune often worked very hard without resting or taking care of himself. Once, he even worked for sixty-nine hours without stopping and managed to save over a hundred lives. One day in 1939, he cut his finger during an operation, but he continued his work without treating it. In the end, he died of his wound. Dr Bethune's work for the Chinese people made him a hero in China. There are many books and films about him, and he is still remembered in both China and Canada today. 6. Where was Norman Bethune from? A. China B. Canada C. Spain D. Japan 7. When did Norman Bethune become a doctor? A. In 1890 B. In 1916 C. In 1936 D. In 1938 8. To help the doctors in his hometown hospital 9. How long did Norman Bethune once work without stopping? A. For 36 hours B. For 69 hours C. For 100 hours D. For 1939 hours 10. What caused Norman Bethune's death? A. A serious illness he got in Spain B. A car accident on his way to the frontline C. A wound on his finger that wasn't treated in time D. Too much work that made him tired out C A hero is someone who does something brave or good for other people, often without thinking about their own safety. Heroes can be scientists, doctors, teachers, or even ordinary people around us. They all have something in common: a kind heart and a strong sense of responsibility. Yuan Longping and Norman Bethune are two great heroes from different fields. Yuan Longping spent his whole life doing research on rice. He helped solve the food problem for millions of people around the world. Norman Bethune gave up his comfortable life in Canada and came to China to save the wounded. He sacrificed his own life for the Chinese people. There are also many unknown heroes around us. For example, firefighters risk their lives to put out fires and save people. Teachers spend their time and energy teaching students and helping them grow up. Volunteers help people in need without asking for anything in return. All of them are heroes worth respecting. 11. What is a hero according to the passage? A. Someone who is famous and rich B. Someone who does brave or good things for others C. Someone who has a lot of knowledge and skills D. Someone who can do scientific experiments 12. What do Yuan Longping and Norman Bethune have in common? A. They were both born in China B. They both worked as doctors in the war C. They both won the Medal of the Republic D. They both helped a lot of people 13. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an unknown hero? A. Firefighters B. Teachers C. Scientists D. Volunteers 14. What does the underlined word "sacrificed" mean in Chinese? A. 牺牲 B. 放弃 C. 选择 D. 贡献 15. What is the main idea of this passage? A. The life stories of two famous heroes B. How to become a hero in other people's eyes C. Different kinds of heroes that we should respect D. The differences between famous heroes and unknown ones D Everyone has their own hero. For some people, their heroes are family members or friends. For others, their heroes are famous people like scientists, singers, or actors. But what makes a person a hero in our hearts? First, a hero should have a strong will. When they face difficulties, they never give up easily. Yuan Longping failed more than 3,000 times in his experiments, but he kept trying until he succeeded. Second, a hero should be kind and helpful. They always think about others more than themselves. Norman Bethune worked day and night to save the wounded soldiers, even though it was very dangerous. Third, a hero should have a sense of duty. They do their best to do what they should do, no matter how hard it is. A hero doesn't have to be famous. Even ordinary people can be heroes if they do something good for others. So we can all learn from heroes and try to be a hero in our own way. 16. What does the passage mainly talk about? A.
