JUST ASK
Hi, I’m David, a writer from the UK. Here, I team up with readers to help solve teens’ problems.
I never had the confidence to raise my hand and answer the teachers’ questions in class. I’m afraid of saying the wrong answers and then my classmates will laugh at me. What should I do?
From Carol
Date: Apr. 15th, 8:09 PM
Hi, Carol! I used to be like this at school. So I know it can be hard to build up the confidence. As for my advice, just do it! Don’t worry about what other people are thinking. Your learning and your engagement (参与) are just as important as anyone else. I think your teachers will be happy to see you joining in more than before.
Be confident and I don’t think other people will laugh at you. If they do, so what? Don’t take it seriously. If you can show that you are not bothered (打扰) by it, you will have the confidence to answer questions and get more from your learning.
From David

Sometimes when people speak, their words become a riddle and are not easily understood.
A man who made his living gathering coconuts in the countryside. He learned this lesson when he stopped to ask a young boy how long it would take him to get home. He had been working late gathering coconuts and piling them high on his wagon.
At the end of the day, his wagon was filled with coconuts. He decided to head home, for it was getting late. He wished to know how long it would take to get back to his village so that he could arrive before darkness fell.
He noticed a small boy along the roadside and stopped to ask for directions.
“Young boy,” he said, “I am late and I must get home soon. How long will it take to get to my village from here?” The boy answered, “If you go slowly, it will take only a short while for you to get home. But if you go quickly, it will take a long time and you will not get there until late in the night.”
The coconut gatherer thought about this answer but he could not understand it. He gave the boy an angry look and hit his horse with the whip. The horse began to run quickly. But soon, coconuts began to fall from the wagon. Each time the man got off to gather the fallen coconuts and put them back into his wagon.
The faster he went, the more coconuts fell from his wagon, and the more time he had to spend stopping to pick them up. But, if he had travelled slowly, none of the coconuts would have fallen, and the man would have arrived home much earlier.
And so, as the young boy warned, go slowly and it will take only a short while.

All human activities create rubbish. Rubbish can be found in the middle of the ocean, in deserts, and on top of the world’s highest mountain. It can even be found in outer space, where it’s called “space junk”.
A lot of space junk is made up of satellites (卫星) that are no longer in use. It also includes tools and other things from astronauts. Scientists have discovered more than 12,000 pieces of junk down to 10cm in size in space. But there are hundreds of thousands of pieces that are too small to be tracked.
Space junk can cause a number of problems. For one thing, an inactive satellite may hit a useful satellite and both may break into pieces, which will create even more junk. Space junk might put other spacecraft (太空飞行器) in danger as well.
One idea for solving this problem is to go to collect the rubbish. A US company is designing a satellite that can collect space junk and move it to an orbit (轨道) where it does not bring any danger.
Space scientists have also realized that this junk is made up of parts that can be reused to build new space stations or satellites. In other words, space junk might be able to be recycled. It is clear that we must take action soon. UK researcher Hugh Lewis recently said that the risk from space junk would rise 50 percent in the next 10 years.

How to be a happy student
Junior school life is considered to be the most meaningful period of students’ lives. I believe the following three ways are important for us to live a happy student life.
Firstly, good health is the most important of all, so we should exercise often to build up our strength. Secondly, we should achieve a balance between schoolwork and relaxation. Make a list of homework we need to do and then spare some time for our hobbies to relax. Thirdly, true friendship is also important. We can share our happiness or worries with our friends at any time.
I believe if we do so, we can achieve both happiness and success.
