People from Britain and Ireland first came to live in Australia in 1788.They brought different dialects
of English with them. These different kinds of English began to mix and change. The newcomers soon
began to speak with their own accents and vocabulary.More and more people came to Australia during the
Gold Rush in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some came from Britain and Ireland;others came from
non-English speaking countries.Australian English continued to grow and change.
Australian English has also been influenced by American English.During the Second World War,
there were many American soldiers staying in Australia.American television shows and music have been
popular in Australia since the 1950s.
Australians use many words that other English speakers do not use.The famous Australian greeting,
for example,is G'day!A native forest is called the bush and central Australia is called the outback. Many
words were brought to Australia from Britain and Ireland. For example, mate means"friend",and it is still
used in Britain. Some of these words have changed in meaning. Some words have come from Australian
original (languages, many of which are names for animals, plants and places, like dingo and
Kangaroo.
Australian spelling comes from British spelling. In words like organise and realise,-ise is the expected
and taught spelling method. In words like colour,favourite,-our is the normal, but nouns such as the Labor
Party and Victor Harbor are spelled with -or.Program,on the other hand,is more common than
programme.
There are also differences in the definition (of words Australians use in different parts of the
country.For example,football means"rugoyin New South Wales and Queensland,but"Australian rules
football"in everywhere else in Australia. In New South Wales,a swimsuit is called a cossie or swimmers,
while in Queensland it is called togs and bathers in Victoria.

The Braille writing system is the most well-known language system used by blind people all around
the world to read and write. It is named after Louis Braille,a young blind child who,at the age of 12,
invented it to improve the way blind people read books at the time-by following raised letters.
At age 10,Louis Braille won a scholarship to France's National Institute of Blind Youth, where he took
up piano and organ ()studies.It was at school that he first heard a guest lecture, delivered by a soldier,
who told the children about a code (his fellow soldiers used to communicate among themselves
without speaking,at night,in battle.
Braille was very interested and realized that the writing system the soldier described could actually be
adapted (to a writing/reading system useful to the blind. He set out and worked to simplify the
soldier's code.After two years of hard work,Braille landed on the now-familiar six-dot alphabet-based code,
which requires just a fingertip to read.He continued to perfect the system over time, finally working with a
friend to develop a machine that let blind people type in the regular alphabet.
Braille published his system when he was 20.Despite praise from fellow blind students and even King
Louis Philippe, the system was refused by some instructors and school board members-they feared that
blind people might take away their jobs teaching blind kids.
Braille enjoyed success as a teacher and musician, but his system didn't spread beyond the institute. It
was only after his death that the system caught attention and became the common way in which blind people
read and write around the world.

Oleg Kononenko has become the first human to achieve 1,000 days of spaceflight over a 16-year
career visiting and living on the International Space Statidn(ISS).The achievement eomes on his fifth
flight to space and during his third term as.the comimander of the ISS.He will become one of the most

Given.that both the Artemis Accords and the International Lunar Researeh Station mitative()
aim to send men and women on longer and longer missions (to space, including semi-permanent
habitation(半永久的居住)of the moon and eventually a journey to Mars, scientists need to understand
what long-term presence in outer space will do to the human body.
To that end,Kononenko, who has routinely spent many hundreds of continuous days and even years
in low-Earth orbit,will be providing data (points"days,months and years,"after his return,says

Institute for Space Health(TRISH),led by Baylor College of Medicine.
Urquieta explains that medicine in space is a growing field, and that the effects of the space
environment on eye health, bone loss, and blood flow are not well understood, nor are the impacts of
