While we were at the store, I saw some cool trousers with a small rabbit on the pocket. “Look, Mom! I love these!” I said excitedly. My mom smiled and said, “Yes, they’re lovely, but the price is way too high. Sorry, Arizona, we can’t afford them.” Then I found another pair of trousers with a big yellow tag (标签) that said “Slightly Damaged (轻微破损).” I pointed to them and said, “What about these?” My mom thought for a moment. “We could fix that small hole in the knee. And they’re half the price!” she said. I tried them on happily, and they fit perfectly. After we fixed the hole, nobody could even tell it had been there. The next day at school, I was in the lunch line when a girl who hardly knew me pointed at my trousers and said loudly, “Look! Arizona is slightly damaged!” Her friends started laughing and saying mean things like, “Someone better return her!” I looked down and saw the big yellow tag hanging from my pocket. I felt so upset. I wanted to cry or shout at the girl, but I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. I decided to laugh it off and act like it wasn’t a big deal. As soon as I got my food, I walked over to my friend Mareya and sat with her, pretending (假装) nothing had happened. I was nervous about the next day, but I paid no attention to the few mean words, and by the end of the week, everything was back to normal. The experience actually had a good side. It has made me learn more about other kids being laughed at and how important it is to stand by them rather than laughing along with the group. 6. Fear is often connected with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided. But that’s not true. Fear can be good for us. Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we will not realize we should run away from a tiger or step back from a high place. Researchers said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from dangerous people, places and activities. Fear makes us jump, shake and cry. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride (过山车). Kerr, a researcher, from the US, explained why to us. Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals, and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us. Besides, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps us bond with each other. “Watch people walking out of a haunted house (鬼屋), and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives.” Kerr said. That also explains why schools organize some challenging trips and physical activities to build up students’ team spirit. People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you get scared easily, don’t worry. Because being scared can help a person manage difficult situations. Kerr said that the fear from things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play can help you be more confident. Also, if you become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, you’ll be better able to work through it during the difficult situations. So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is. 11. What do many people think of fear according to the first paragraph? A. Bad. B. Helpful. C. Interesting. D. Exciting. 12. What do the underlined words “bond with” mean? A. get closer to B. fight against C. pay attention to D. communicate with 13. Why do schools organize challenging trips and physical activities? A. To help students get over their fear of danger completely. B. To make students produce chemicals that feel like happiness. C. To develop students’ team spirit by letting them have fear together. D. To let students practice running away from difficult situations. 14. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? A. B. C. D. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. Recently, researchers in New Jersey, discovered the Cooper’s Hawk (库珀鹰) can understand how to use human traffic rules to hunt, so that they hunt more easily and successfully. This was discovered by Vladimir Dinets, who is both an animal expert and a mathematician, and his research was published on May 23,2025, in Frontiers in Animal Behavior. Other studies have pointed out that birds often use human buildings and vehicles to help them hunt, but recognizing traffic lights is a first. In the winter of 2021, Dinets saw a young Cooper’s Hawk standing in a tree near the traffic lights. It flew low over with the cover of stopped cars, and disappeared into the front yard across the street. A moment later, it reappeared, catching a sparrow (麻雀). This hunt left a deep impression on Dinets. It seemed to know when the traffic light was red. Through continued observation, Dinets believes it recognized traffic lights through the buzzing sound (嗡嗡声) when the red light was on at a certain time. Also, the hawk knew that sparrows would be at a certain house because the owner put out rubbish every day. So, the hawk used the cars which lined up to get close to the sparrows without being seen, making it easier to catch them. This is more difficult than imagined. The Cooper’s Hawk can’t see its prey (猎物) from the tree. So it has to remember the surroundings and work out its way. Also, it has to know that some buzzing sounds have something to do with traffic lights. This behavior must come from careful calculations (计算), a great memory and complex thinking skills. In a word, to have this hunting skill needs a lot of intelligence. Maybe other animals can do the same, but this Cooper’s Hawk is the first wild animal they’ve discovered. These birds fly through here when migrating (迁徙) in summer and winter. This means the Cooper’s Hawk probably learned to do this in just a few days or weeks. Finally, Dinets also saw a Cooper’s Hawk hunting in the same manner the following winter (2022), and he believes it is the same hawk, now an adult. However, in the summer of the year after that, the sound signal of the streetlight was gone, the people living there moved away, and there were no longer any sparrows there. From then on, until the article was published, Dinets never saw the Cooper’s Hawk nearby again. 16. In which sentence does “cover” have the same meaning as the underlined “cover”? A. A dust cover hung over the world-famous painting. B. I read the fashion magazine from cover to cover. C. The boys used the shop as a cover to hide themselves. D. Once the forest cover is broken, rains wash away the soil 17. What did the Cooper’s Hawk use to judge the traffic lights? A. Traffic lights’ colors. B. The surroundings. C. The stopped cars. D. The buzzing sound. 18. How does the writer support the idea “This is more difficult than imagined.”? A. By offering examples. B. By giving numbers. C. By making comparisons. D. By showing facts. 19. What do we know about the Cooper’s Hawk? A. It is the first wild animal to use buildings to hunt. B. It caught its prey with the help of the house owner. C. It may learn the hunting skill in a short period. D. It appeared for the last time on May 23,2025. 20. What may be a suitable title for the text? A. A discovery about the Cooper’s Hawk. B. 6. C You may be told before not to be afraid of anything. C To develop students’ team spirit by letting them have fear together. D. To let students practice running away from difficult situations. 14. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? A. B. C. D. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. A new study about fear. B. The advantages fear brings us. C. Different ways people deal with fear. D. People’s misunderstandings about fear. D Birds don’t have very large brains, but they are super clever! A.
