The Mini Problem
Lily's disappointment was surely clear. She woke up on Christmas morning
and, along with her brother, ran down to see the gifts under the tree.
In the living room sat a nice mini bike.It was red with a white gas tank. For a
short moment,Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn't imagine anything
better than getting that bike. Then, her eyes caught sight of a baby doll sitting on the
sofa with a huge bow.
She knew. She knew that the mini bike belonged to her brother and that doll
would be her Christmas gift.It was always like this.Tommy always got cool things:
skateboards, gliders, science kits. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing.Lily
always got the boring gifts:a set of toy cooking kits,a pink tutu with silver
twinkling stars,a pair of fairy lady's feather wings. They are amazing for other girls,
but she didn't like them at all.To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again. The
doll had big eyes with super long eyelashes and straight blond hair. She even wore a
petticoat(衬裙),
Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore's Bike Shop, but
hadn't Lily too?Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he
wanted for Christmas.Although Lily had the same thought, the words were on the
tip of her tongue, finally she failed to say them, again. She was a shy girl, even in
front of her family.
Tommy's eyes grew wide at the sight of the bike.He knew it was his-no doll
for him.He ran into his parents'room and jumped excitedly on the bed
“Thank you,Mama!Thank you,Papa!”he yelled
At the same time Lily walked into the other room silently. She was
disappointed and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing.
"What's wrong,Lily?"Papa asked gently."Did you see your pretty doll?"
“I saw it,.”she said unhappily..
"What's wrong, honey? You can't imagine how long your father waited in line
to buy that doll!It was nearly 30 minutes. The shop was always full of people."
Mama said.
Silence.Lily's jaw (was fixed. Her face was pale. Her hands clenched

Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run
in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat
(while running.Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and
freezing cold winds, may kecp many people from running in the open air.
However,a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to
run.In fact,running in cold weather helps improve one's performance.Many
runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less
water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce
stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St.Mary's University in

London. For this study,he and other researchers put a group of people into a room
where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects were
asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological
measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be
really damaging unless the body can lose it.One way in which people lose heat is by
sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting
the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in
hot conditions because it's much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is
warm.As the result shows, running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher
heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move
blood to the skin surface. Therefore,it requires less energy. The most important
things for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing.Keep as
dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures.Wear warm and light clothing
to keep sweat away from your skin So don't let winter weather keep you indoors.
Siply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
27.Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
A.Because the weather conditions could be recreated for four seasons.
B.Because the researchers could teach the people there to study science.
C.Because the test subjects'biological measurements could be recorded
D.Because the team could study the biological measurements of the subjects.
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Running in cold weather doesn't need a lot of energy.
B.Running in cold weather needs heavy clothing to keep warm.
C.Running in hot weather causes hearts beat slower than in cold.
D.Running in hot weather produces more heat than other movements
29.What is the main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To study why the drop in temperature is good to.run.
B.To compare benefits of running in winter and summer.
C.To encourage people to keep running outdoors in winter.
D.To show us how to keep healthy while running in winter.

If you are on a bus or train, you've probably noticed that most people spend the
ride looking at their cell phones. No doubt, they think doing nothing but sit there
would be boring,so they prefer distracting themselves. This squares()with
past research showing people will do almost anything to avoid boredom.
政
But results from new research suggest we should rethink that choice. We are
probably underestimating (how enjoyable and interesting it is to do nothing
but pay attention to wherever our thoughts take us.
In a series of experiments, researchers brought Russian university students into
a lab and told them that they would soon go into a room without their belongings to
wait and do nothing but sit for 20 minutes. While waiting, they could think about
anything,but were not allowed to sleep,walk,or exercise;look at a smartphono;or
check a watch. Before entering the room, they were asked to prediet how much
they'd enjoy waiting and thinking, how interesting or boring it would be,and how
much it would engage them so that they would lose themselves in it and forget the
time. Then, they went in the room to wait.Afterward, they reported how waiting
actually felt-how engaging,pleasurable,interesting,or boring it was.(In some
variations of the experiment, they waited in a dark room without any stimulation(
激),Either way,,researchers found that the participants(参与者)were not good at
predicting how much they'd enjoy doing nothing but think.Even in a dark room
with no stimulation, they ended up being more engaged and interested than they'd
expected.
"People don't recognize the real value of waiting or thinking,"says researcher
Kou Murayama of the Motivation Science Lab at the University of Tubingen in
Germany and coauthor of the study."Once they engage in it,though, they appreciate
it.”Spontaneous(自发的)thinking often involves mind-.wandering,daydreaming,
thinking about the future,or recollecting memories, all of which can have upsides.
For example, daydreaming and mind-wandering have been found to improve our
mood,creativity,goal-setting,and job performance.
Though it's hard.to know if these results with students would apply to the rest
of us,Murayama did at least compare German students to Russian students and
found both groups underestimated the pleasure of waiting to a similar degree. This
-2025-2026学年度第一学期阶段练习(二)初三英语第8页(共11页)-
suggests that it's not necessarily a culturally-driven phenomenon ()though
more research would need to be done to check that.
Overall, says Murayama, the results suggest we rethink whipping out our cell
phones every time we are waiting or bored.Instead,we might benefit from having a
moment to think freely about whatever catches our fancy-and enjoy ourselves just
as much.
30.What can we learn from the experiments mentioned in the passage?
A.Participants could sleep when they stayed in the lab.
B.Participants felt more interested than they had expected.
C.Participants could enter the dark room with their watches.
D.Participants predicted they would enjoy waiting and thinking.
3l.The word“engage'”in Paragraph3 probably means“
A.upset
B.surprise
C.confuse
D.attract
32.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
A.More studies are needed to support the findings.
B.Both Germans and Russians undervalued the pleasure of waiting
C.Underestimating the pleasure of waiting may not be related to culture.
D.The study results with students would be able to apply to the rest of us.
33.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To present the results of new research.
B.To introduce a culturally-driven phenomenon.
C.To discuss the true meaning of waiting and thinking.
D.To advise us to think freely when we have nothing to do.

Playing Outdoors
I grew up in a family where both of my parents worked in the tech industry. Both
of them are programmers. Our home was always filled with computers.Naturally,I
followed in their footsteps and became very comfortable with technology from an
early age.
My room had everything a modern teen could dream ofhigh-speed Internet
-2025-2026学年度第一学期阶段练习(二)初三英语第9页(共11页)-
and a smart TV.It was easy to forget the time while exploring online worlds. My
parents didn't encourage it.But since they were often busy with their own screens,
they didn't stop me either.Over time, going outside became something I hardly did.
However, this lifestyle started to feel tiring and unhealthy.I was often restless.I
didn't feel excited about much anymore. My younger sister, who's always been the
opposite of me-wild,curious,and full of energy would often ask me to go out and
play with her.I always said no.
One weekend, encouraged by a friend,I decided to spend the day outdoors
without screens. At first, the idea seemed challenging.
But something magical happened.By the afternoon,my original fears began to
disappear.I started noticing things I never had before, like the calming sound of
leaves in the wind, the lovely colors of flowers, and the fresh smell of grass.I ran,
climbed, and explored like a carefree child. For the first time in years,I felt really
relaxed and joyful.
As days went by,my outdoor adventures continued.I noticed that my body felt
different.I began to sleep better and woke up refreshed each morning. My sister and I
started playing together more often, and our relationship grew stronger:Best of all,
spending time outside reconnected me with old friends and introduced me to new ones
who shared similar interests.
Besides physical improvements, nature helped me forget daily worries and find
happiness in simple things.Even simple activities like having a picnic, flying kites,or
watching the sunset became special moments filled with happiness
Now,months into this new habit, playing outdoors has become an important part
of my life.My parents even started joining us for weekend walks, slowly letting go of
their screens for a while.Spending time outdoors has taught me to treasure moments
of peace and quiet more deeply.
34.What do the writer's parents do?
35.Who encouraged the writer to spend the day outdoors?
