A Man Behind the Camera
There is more to photography than just taking pictures. A perfect example of this is Xi Zhinong. Xi is a wildlife photographer. He is also the starter of the Wild China Film, a group that uses photos and films to help protect nature. For about 40 years, Xi has used his camera to take lots of photos of wild animals and help save them.
Xi was born in 1964 in Weishan, a small town in Yunnan Province. When he was a young boy, he had deep feelings for wild animals. In 1983, he joined a bird research team from Yunnan University and took part in filming the documentary Birds of Paradise. This was his first experience with wildlife photography and he took a liking to it. Then he borrowed a camera and threw himself into studying how to use it. He also spent days reading magazines about nature. It opened a door for him to understand nature better.
From 1992 to 1995, Xi worked in the Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve to study Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys. He went into the snow mountains six times. In 1993, on his third trip, he saw a family of the monkeys. He slowly turned on his camera. It was the first time people used a camera to record the Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys’ activities. Three years later, he made a documentary called Mysterious Yunnan Snub-Nosed Monkey. It won many awards at international film festivals.
Xi’s photos and films have touched hearts worldwide. “A good wildlife work can cut through to people’s hearts, and that is the power of photography,” Xi said. He hopes more people will take action to protect wildlife and work together to live in harmony with nature.
