Hi, I’m Daniel, a TEENS writer from the US. Here, I team up with a reader of your age to help solve your problems.
Steven: Whenever I get better grades than my friend, he treats me coldly and even quarrels (吵架) with me. Now we are more and more distant (疏远) from each other. What should I do?
Daniel: You just did your best at school, but now you are feeling bad because of it. Maybe your friend is envious (嫉妒的). Or maybe his parents compare him to you, which makes him feel upset. Or maybe it’s you. Perhaps, when you talk about your grades, you sound snobbish.
At my age, a similar situation is about money. Here’s my rule. If a friend makes less money than I do, I don’t talk about it. If someone makes more money than I do, I don’t talk about it. Money is everybody’s private information.
Guess what else is private information? Your school grades. So keep them to yourself. If someone asks you about it, just say, “I need to keep working.”
Lu Siyi: I have a friend just like yours. She always treats me coldly after she knew I got a higher score than her. One reason for my friend treating me coldly is that her parents often scold (责骂) her when she doesn’t do well. I think you can study together with your friend so that you can make progress together. It’s good for your study and your friendship.
9. Steven’s problem is about ______.
A. his better grades B. his friend’s bad cold
C. his personal relationship D. an unfriendly argument
10. What do the underlined words “you sound snobbish” mean?
A. You worry about your marks. B. You make fun of your friend.
C. Your voice is too low to hear. D. You are pleased with yourself.
11. What does Daniel want to tell Steven by talking about his situation about money?
A. Don’t share your grades with others. B. Encourage him to work hard in his study.
C. Understand what is his rule about money. D. Keep how much money you make as a secret.
12. According to Lu Siyi, what should you do if you have a friend like Steven’s?
A. Stop your friend’s parents from scolding him/ her.
B. Don’t care too much about your friend’s coldness.
C. Try your best to help your friend become the best.
D. Make efforts to let both of you keep on improving.
D
Life has a way of changing us. Life can make you doubt or question your purpose. These are thoughts that I have had in my head for many years. Poetry (诗) prepares me for my purpose. My purpose is poetry.
In my journey towards purpose, poetry is my safety net. I started writing at the age of 5. By 13, I had written quite a lot of poems. Poetry was my escape from bullying by my classmates. They bullied me because of the way I looked. This bullying gave me low self-esteem (自尊). Poetry was my way to be seen, be heard and be known.
For each important moment in my life, I write poetry. In hard times, I write poetry. I connect with poetry on a deep level: It sets me free from pain. However, writing poetry can’t support me. So I turned to teaching instead.
While living in China, my job is an English teacher. I help teach two classes. The two Chinese teachers I work with give me feedback on how to teach the students English. The teachers decide what I need to do in the classroom. With challenging situations like this, I continue writing poetry. I write down my feelings. I reflect. I accept a new me. I learn to think positively. My relationship with poetry grows over time. Poetry stays in the depths of my mind.
There is nothing stopping you. The only person standing in your way is you. You have the power. Keep going. Keep believing. Remember that your hard work is not in vain. Go for it! Your purpose is waiting for you!
13. “These” in the first paragraph refers to ______.
A. having a good shape B. going for the purpose
C. doubting yourself in life D. learning to write poetry
14. Why can the poetry be the writer’s safety net?
A. It allows her to avoid the sadness. B. It makes her famous at a young age.
C. It helps have confidence in her look. D. It educates the persons who bullied her.
15. Why does the writer decide to be a teacher?
A. She wants to change herself. B. She needs money to live on.
C. She enjoys teaching in China. D. She can share poems in her class.
16. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To make people be brave and say no if treated badly.
B. To tell people teaching is the best way to become happy.
C. To show why the writer falls in love with writing poetry.
D. To encourage readers to get confidence to go for purposes.

For thousands of years, people have been curious about the small and red planet—Mars. Around 3,000 years ago, in ancient China, people already knew about the planet and began to study how it moved in the sky. However, it was difficult to find out more about it before the 20th century.
On 23 July 2020, China’s first Mars lander, Tianwen-1, was sent into space from Wenchang, Hainan Island. The spacecraft (航天器) takes its name from an ancient poem by Qu Yuan (340-278 BCE). “Tianwen” means “Questions to Heaven (天)” and expresses China’s determination (决心) to explore the universe.
After travelling more than 470 million kilometres, Tianwen-1 reached the red planet on 10 February 2021. The craft circled around the planet for three months before landing on the surface on 15 May. There, it released (放开) a 240-kilogram rover (天体登陆车) named Zhurong. During the next 100 days, Zhurong drove 1,000 metres on the planet’s surface and continued its travel. It took photos of Mars and studied different kinds of rocks, and then it sent the information back to the Earth. The information and pictures it collected have been very helpful to scientists.
Scientists still have one main question about Mars. They have wondered whether there was life on Mars. The success of Tianwen-1 is only the beginning of China’s Mars exploration programme. Maybe one day Chinese astronauts will visit Mars.

Hi, I’m Daniel, a TEENS writer from the US. Here, I team up with a reader of your age to help solve your problems.
Steven: Whenever I get better grades than my friend, he treats me coldly and even quarrels (吵架) with me. Now we are more and more distant (疏远的) from each other.
C Try your best to help your friend become the best.
D. Make efforts to let both of you keep on improving.
【答案】9. C 10. D 11. A 12. D
【解析】

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据“I think you can study together with your friend so that you can make progress together.”可知,Lu Siyi建议两人一起学习、共同进步。故选D。

14. Why can the poetry be the writer’s safety net?
