Many people know the names Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. However, most people don’t know the name of the man who invented the television, Philo Farnsworth.
Philo Farnsworth was born in 1906 and grew up on a potato farm. As a boy, he loved to learn about science, and he read a lot of science books. When he was only thirteen years old, he drew a picture of a machine that could send pictures as radio sends sounds. He got the idea from the way the potatoes were planted in the field. The potatoes grew in long lines, side by side. This made a shape in Philo’s mind. This shape helped Philo think of a way to send the TV picture onto a piece of glass. But he was poor, so Philo could not try to make his idea into a machine at that time.
Later, Philo worked at many different jobs. He worked with trees. He worked on broken radios. He worked on trains. He also worked as a street cleaner. At last, two rich men heard about his idea for television, and they gave him the money to make it. On September 7th, 1927, they watched Philo test the machine he built. When Philo turned on the machine, a small line could be seen on the glass. Philo said, "There you have it, electric television."
Later, a big company, RCA, said they had made the first television. Philo had to spend a lot of money on lawyers to fight them. Finally, he won. Then, World War Two started in 1939. During the war, Philo spent a lot of money helping the US army instead of building up his television company. After the war, other bigger, richer companies started making televisions. In the end, Philo had to sell his company.
36.Philo Farnsworth got the idea of TV from __________.
A. the radio B. science books
C. potato fields D. a machine
37.According to the text, how old was Philo when he finished his invention of TV?

A. e-d-a-c-b B. d-a-e-c-b C. e-a-d-c-b D. a-c-b-d-e

It’s exciting to see so much fantastic technology (技术) from TV shows and films come true. However, there are still things from these shows and movies that we don’t have yet. Will we see them become real in the future? Let’s take a look at some of these “impossibilities”.
Faster-than-light (FTL) travel
In the Star Wars films, spaceships can travel faster than the speed of light, crossing an entire galaxy in minutes. This is called faster-than-light travel.
Physicists say that this speed is impossible to reach because traveling so fast takes a lot of energy — and hitting light speed would take an almost infinite amount. But some people think we could take “shortcuts (捷径)” in space by traveling through wormholes (虫洞), which would allow us to cover great distances more quickly, but that sounds not practical.
Teleportation (瞬移)
Imagine being able to travel from Beijing to Paris in the blink of an eye. This is the idea behind teleportation — a way to move people or objects somewhere quickly with a special machine. The theory is that the machine can break you down into molecules (分子) and then send your molecules to a second machine that “rebuilds” you. You can see it in the Star Trek TV series, where characters use it to “beam (发射) down” to the ground.
Obviously this sounds dangerous. For one thing, how would the machines know how to break you down or rebuild you without hurting or even killing you? This technology, if it’s even possible, is likely to happen hundreds of thousands of years away.
Brain in uploads/downloads (意识上传下载)
When we die, our brains stop working. Our memories and experience are lost too, but what if we could save them in a computer?
In the 2014 film Transcendence, a dying scientist uploads his consciousness (意识) to a computer. He can still think and feel, even though his consciousness is inside a computer instead of a human body.
However, this is impossible because the brain is much more complex (复杂) than the network. Our brains has 86 billion neurons (神经元). Recreating these neurons in digital form and finding a way for them to communicate with each other in the way that real neurons do is beyond (超过) our knowledge.
41.According to the text, faster- than-light travel might be achieved by __________.
A. creating an infinite amount of energy
B. building a stronger rocket
C. changing how space-time works
D. traveling through wormholes
42.Why is teleportation dangerous?
A. Because it is too fast.
B. Because individual molecules can kill other molecules.
C. Because the machines might hurt or kill their users.
D. Because beaming down to planets is unsafe.
43.Compared with a computer, how does human consciousness work?
A. Neurons work Hike digital networks.
B. Neurons in the brain communicate with each other.
C. The brain is powered by electricity.
D. The brain can save more information than computer.
44.Which one of these three technologies is likely to become real in the near future according to the passage?
A. Faster than-light (FTL) travel B. Teleportation
C. Brain in uploads/downloads D. None of them
45.Where can we probably see this passage?
A. A story book B. A government report
C. A science magazine D. An opening speech
C
How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2,000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them all night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, Kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wight brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.
46.According to the passage, in which countries were kites used to make good wishes?
A. China and Japan. B. China and Thailand.
C. Japan and Indonesia. D. Thailand and Indonesia.
