In recent years, short-form videos have become popular around the world. Compared with traditional long-form videos, they are more convenient.
However, some Chinese researchers have some worries. They have recently studied how short-form videos reshape our brains and influence our genes. The new study found that watching short-form videos could increase brain activity (活跃性). This may lead to various biological and nervous system problems.
For the study, the researchers picked out 111 college students between the ages of 17 and 30 who liked to use social media. Researchers collected their brain imaging data using MRI scans (磁共振扫描) to see the nerve system effects of short-form videos, especially in terms of structural changes and functional activity in the brain.
The results were astonishing. Students who spent more time on short-form videos had different brain structures and functions from others. There is an increase in gray matter in two brain regions, which help people make decisions, deal with information and control their emotions. This change makes the brain more sensitive to the quick pleasure of watching one video after another. That’s why it’s harder for these students to stop using short-form video apps.
Moreover, the researchers found nearly 500 genes that are related to brain changes from short-form video addiction. Interestingly, most of these genes show greater activity when people are teenagers. This shows that the teenage years are a weak period—people at this age may be more likely to get addicted to short-form videos.

Famous Chinese artist Chang Shana has spent her whole life protecting and spreading the art of Dunhuang.
An exhibition at the National Art Museum of China, called “Blossoms of Dunhuang”, celebrates Chang Shana’s 60-year artistic journey. She fell in love with Dunhuang thanks to her father, Chang Shuhong, who was the pioneer of introducing Dunhuang art.
In 1943, her father, an artist who had won several medals in France, made up his mind to contribute to Dunhuang after reading about the cave art there. The family traveled for a whole month, and in autumn, they finally reached the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.
The next year, Chang Shuhong founded Dunhuang Art Institute (研究院), now known as Dunhuang Academy. He gave up a bright future in his art career to focus on the protection and study of Dunhuang’s cultural treasures. But this was not an easy task because the living conditions were extremely difficult. Yet, Chang Shana and her father stayed to continue their mission.
Under the guidance of her father, institute researchers and visiting artists, Chang Shana began creating detailed copies of the murals (壁画). “My father taught me how to sketch the paintings,” she recalls. “I learned a lot about murals and how their styles changed over time. That experience shaped my entire career.”
Later, Chang Shana went to the United States for further study. After returning to China, she turned her focus to decorative and industrial design and taught at Tsinghua University. Over the years, she has completed many important design projects inspired by Dunhuang murals, including the ceiling of the Great Hall of the People. For Chang Shana, Dunhuang is no longer just a place—it has become a vital part of her life and identity.
21. What is the main purpose of the “Blossoms of Dunhuang” exhibition?
A. To honor Chinese mural artists. B. To show Dunhuang’s natural beauty.
C. To promote tourism in Gansu Province. D. To celebrate Chang Shana’s artistic journey.
22. Why did Chang Shuhong go to Dunhuang in 1943?
A. Because he needed a quiet place to do the painting.
B. Because he wanted to protect and study its cave art.
C. Because he was asked to move there by his daughter.
D. Because he was invited to teach at Dunhuang Academy.
23. What helped shape Chang Shana’s artistic career?
A. Studying in the foreign universities. B. Copying murals under the expert guidance.
C. Designing modern buildings in Beijing. D. Teaching students at Tsinghua University.
24. How has Dunhuang influenced Chang Shana?
A. It has become part of who she is. B. It has given her a chance to live abroad.
C. It has helped her win awards in the US. D. It has made her more interested in teaching.

On November 1, 2025, the Shenzhou-21 crew successfully entered China’s Space Station. China’s Shenzhou-21 spacecraft is going to do something great: send four mice into space! This is a special mission in China’s space history, as these are the first small rodents (啮齿类) animals sent by our country’s spacecraft. Many people are excited about this news, as it marks an important step in China’s progress in space exploration and helps us learn more about living beyond Earth.
These four mice are not common. Before the mission, they went through strict tests. More than 300 mice tried to get this chance. The tests were not easy. They had to show strong health, the ability to adapt to the space and even the ability to stay calm in strange situations. For example, they needed to stand on a rotating (旋转的) stick for a long time without falling, and get used to sudden movements. Only the top four, which performed best in all tests with great patience and calmness, got the precious “space tickets” to start their special journey.
In space, the mice will live in a special small home. ▲ This home can carefully control heat and cold, keep the air clean, and even change lights to suit the mice’s daily needs. It has all the necessary things: food, clean water, and a system to take care of their waste. They will stay at the space station for 5 to 7 days, and scientists will watch their state closely day and night.
Why do scientists choose mice for this mission? Because mice’s genes (基因) are much like humans’—about 85% similar. The information scientists get from the mice will help us learn how to live safely and healthily in space for a long time. This mission is truly an important step for China’s space dreams.
26 How many mice were sent into space by our country’s spacecraft?
A. 300. B. 21. C. 14. D. 4.
27. Which of the following is one of the tests the mice had to pass?
A. Build a tiny house for a long time. B. Eat special space food for a short time.
C. Stand on a rotating stick for a long time. D. Fly a small model plane for a short time.
28. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Worthless. B. Cheap. C. Valuable. D. Similar.
29. Which sentence can be filled in the ▲ in Paragraph 3?
A. It is designed to meet their living needs. B. It is much smaller than the space station.
C. It was made by mice themselves recently. D. It has been used by astronauts recently.
30. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the special living environment of the space mice.
B. To compare our human genes with those four mice in space.
C. To introduce the Shenzhou-21 mice space mission and its value.
D. To explain how four mice were chosen for the space journey.

Recently, the government in Foshan announced that primary and junior middle school students in the city had an autumn break which lasted for three days from Nov 12 to 14.
According to the city government, the autumn break is aimed at adjusting the learning pace of the city’s primary and junior middle school students. It means reducing their heavy study pressure, keeping balance between learning and playing and guiding them to step out of the classrooms into the society and nature more often. During the autumn holiday, students are encouraged to take part in social practice activities.
A mother of a fifth-grade student, surnamed Yi, said the autumn break was very meaningful, adding that she planned to take her daughter on a trip.
Xiong Bingqi, director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said that the autumn break benefited schools, teachers, and students. “But the key is how to put it in place when students face heavy study pressure to enter higher-level schools, and they have to face fierce competitions for top exam scores, including zhongkao and gaokao,” he said. “In addition, the students might not be well taken care of at home during the holidays if their parents still have to work.” Xiong called for a paid vacation system for parents, encouraging them to spend more time with their children during the autumn break.
为了落实“双减”政策,调整学习节奏,教育部门最近出台了关于“秋假”的政策,结合上述文章,以约120词就“秋假给我们带来了什么”这一话题发表看法。

In space the mice will live in a special small home.
26. How many mice were sent into space by our country’s spacecraft?
A. 300. B. 21. C. 14. D. 4.

46. 阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇120词左右的英语短文。
