Do you like to celebrate the New Year? During the New Year’s celebrations, people usually eat delicious food, wear beautiful clothes, and set off firecrackers. In different countries, people celebrate the New Year in different ways. Here are the ideas of four people from different parts of the world.
I am Nadal. In Spain, on New Year’s Eve, we eat twelve grapes when it is 12 o’clock. People believe grapes can bring good luck for the next twelve months. The faster you eat, the happier you will be.
I am Sheila. In Brazil, people in the countryside give New Year’s wishes in a special way. They pull each other’s ears on New Year’s Day. If we pull the ears harder, we will have more wishes in the future.
I am Li Lei. Chinese New Year is called “the Spring Festival”. The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China. During the Spring Festival, we usually eat dumplings in North China. We also hang Spring couplets on doors and get lucky money.
My name is Egonu. In Italy, we set off firecrackers, but there is one special tradition. We break old glasses, old bowls and old plates. We want to sweep away bad luck.
21.In Spain, people eat twelve grapes very fast on New Year’s Eve to ______.
A.have an eating game with family
B.bring happiness and good luck
C.celebrate the start of a new month
22.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Pulling ears is a common way to greet people in Brazil’s cities.

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-curricular activities where they will either learn music or dance, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. Chinese believe that the more expensive the education is, the better it is. So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for the son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children’s skills are different, maybe good in some areas, but poor in others. Most parents fail to realize that today’s children are in need of self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills—they need to be confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or a TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and interested. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but also to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
23.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Parents spend much money on their children’s education without thinking.
B.Parents don’t often send their children to the best schools.
C.Parents seldom want their children to take extra-curricular.
24.Most parents don’t realize _______.
A.how much the best education is worth
B.when children should be educated
C.what children really need in their life
25.The writer’s attitude(态度) to children’s education is that _______.
A.the cheaper the education is, the better it is
B.children today should learn difficult skills
C.practical skills are helpful to children’s growth
26.The passage is probably written to _______.
A.parents B.children C.teachers

When we were young, we always listened to others’ decisions for different reasons. This may seem to make things easier, but it also leads to missing chances.
I still remember that when I was an 8-year-old boy, I always asked my parents, friends and teachers for help. Being afraid of doing something wrong, I seldom made decisions by myself. I asked myself many times, “What should I do? Should I always depend on others?”
However, I began to change after I became a high school student. It was when I decided to join in the School Singing Competition. Even though it was so hard to give a great performance, I took the chance and practiced hard for the competition. Then the day came soon.
My heart beat fast because it was the first time that I had sung in public. When I opened my mouth, the voice was clear and sweet. Luckily, I won first prize. I was happy with myself for the first time. I realized that if I wanted to make my life full, I had to take each chance.
From then on, I was not afraid to meet difficulties. Take the following thing as an example. When it came to the courses, I used to choose those without any challenges. But I took a difficult science course this time. I know that as long as I try hard, I can still get a good grade in the exam.
“Life is about taking up the things you are not good at,” my mother told me. Now I know that things will become easier with hard work and every chance I take.
27.What does the writer think of listening to others’ decisions?
A.It can be helpful but it also brings problems.
B.It can help people make more friends in schools.
C.It can give people more time to have fun with others.
28.What’s the correct order according to the passage?
a. The writer felt happy with himself for the first time.
b. The writer chose a difficult science course.
c. Making decisions by himself was hard for the writer.
d. The writer practiced hard to give a great performance.
e. The singing competition in the writer’s high school started.
A.c-a-e-d-b B.c-d-e-a-b C.d-c-e-a-b
29.Which words can best describe the writer?
A.Brave and hard-working. B.Helpful but shy. C.Polite and funny.
30.What lesson can we learn from the writer’s change?
A.Nobody is perfect in the world.
B.It’s important to learn from others.
C.Nothing is impossible as long as we catch every chance and work hard!

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress. This feeling is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are several stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually known as the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”. However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and prefect certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.
56.The writer doesn’t think “culture shock” is difficult to overcome, does he?
57.What problems may people face when they experience “culture shock”?
58.How many stages of “culture shock” are mentioned in the article?

Our school newspaper did a survey about the biggest challenges for Grade 9 students, and here are the results. The two biggest problems are having too much stress and having too little time.
First, we need to learn to relax. When you feel stressed, it is helpful to talk to your parents or close friends about your worries. Also, doing some sports like running or playing basketball, or even listening to your favorite music can help you clear your mind and feel better. Second, manage our time wisely. We should make a practical study plan for each week, listing all the tasks we need to do.
By taking these steps, we will become better.
