Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “we don’t know”. But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life lives somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact it.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life lives on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescopes (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 1000 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes allow scientists to find smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Has intelligent life from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent life may contact us in other ways, such as radio. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2525, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”
56.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.intelligent life B.astronomer C.telescope D.universe
57.Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
A.There were not any smaller planets.
B.The Milky Way didn’t exist at that time.
C.The astronomers were not interested in them.
D.There were not any powerful telescopes.
58.Why hasn’t intelligent life from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A.They are afraid of us.
B.It’s far away from us.
C.They don’t want to see us.
D.They don’t know how to use radio signals.
59.In Shostak’s opinion, which of the following statement is TRUE?
A.There is life on other planets because there are nearly 100 billion galaxies.
B.We might be able to get in touch with other life forms in 2525.
C.Intelligent life from space doesn’t have tools to send message.
D.It is too short to have intelligent life on other planets.
60.We can read the passage in ________ part of a magazine.
A.sports B.business C.science D.advertisement

In recent years, social media (社交媒体) has become increasingly popular among children. This worries parents because they don’t want their children to face possible dangers online.
As the saying goes, “Prevention (预防) is better than treatment.” Many parents think they have a role (职责) in monitoring their children’s online activities to keep them safe and out of risks.
However, there is a misunderstanding about what “prevention” really means. Many people believe that monitoring is all about stopping children from watching something bad online. But this doesn’t work well in practice. On the one hand, it’s impossible for parents to stop children from watching all bad things completely. On the other hand, if children are never put in such situations, they won’t learn how to deal with them independently. The best way is to teach children what to do when they come across something bad online.
If parents choose to monitor their children’s online activities, they should do it in a smart way. Then how? First, parents should let their children know that they’ll be watching their online activities. Second, have an open conversation and clearly explain how the monitoring will work. Third, be careful. There is a line between protecting children and over-controlling them. Parents should discuss the details (详情) with their children and listen to their opinions.
In short, instead of just blocking (屏蔽) everything, parents should teach children how to stay safe online. This way, children can learn to use the Internet safely.
61.Why do parents want to monitor their children’s online activities?
A.To protect them from online risks. B.To tell them how to speak up online.
C.To stop them from wasting time online. D.To teach them to use social media correctly.
62.What does the underlined word “misunderstanding” probably mean?
A.Unfairness. B.Disbelief. C.Mistake. D.Secret.
63.What does the writer think of parents’ full prevention?
A.It helps their children learn a lot.
B.It makes parents feel safer.
C.It keeps their children away from all risks.
D.It stops their children from learning self-protection.
64.What does the writer think parents should do about monitoring?
A.Do it strictly and secretly. B.Discuss rules openly with their children.
C.Avoid doing it if their children are careful. D.Let their children watch their online activities.
65.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The risks of social media B.Young children’s online secrets
C.Social media: good or bad for children? D.The role of parents in children’s online world

Possible version 1:
I often feel happy. Reading makes me so happy, because I can get much knowledge by reading.
I often read history books. I am very interested in history. I can learn about Chinese history and I feel proud of my country. I often give away some books to the children in poor areas. Then they can read books like me. I believe they will feel happy, too. When we grow up, we will make our country stronger. I won’t make any changes to my love of reading. I’m happy with my life now.
Possible version 2:
I often feel angry. I’m angry with myself. I hope to develop some healthy habits like getting up early or taking more exercise, but I still spend most of my time playing computer games. I’m also angry with my friend Bill. He argued with me several days ago and I don’t want to talk to him any more. But I really want to change these things. Maybe I should be strict with myself and maybe I should say sorry to Bill first. After all, I don’t want to lose my best friend.
