One of the park highlights is the Zion Canyons, which offers different hiking (远足) opportunities. Late spring or early fall is the best time to visit Zion National Park, since most facilities are open during this time. However, if you don’t mind cold weather, visit during the late fall and winter. The best time of the year to visit is when the weather is pleasant in the spring and fall. The park has four main parts: The Maze, Island in the Sky, The Needles, and Horseshoe Canyon. If you plan to visit every part, you can go on a boat tour to explore it. Arches National Park Known as a red-rock wonderland, Arches National Park is popular for its stone arches (石拱).The park has over 2,000 stone arches, with Landscape Arch the largest. In second and third year we all did General Maths, and our teacher was Mrs Lindsay—Clare Lindsay. Her arrival at our classroom was always quick, “Good morning, everyone!” “Small but energetic, she would drop her thing on the teacher’s table, and move immediately to the blackboard, continuing the material of the last lesson as though we had all just been away from the room for five minutes. Our books would be out, and we would watch her closely. I’ve thought a lot about Clare Lindsay over the years. What was her special magic? There’re two reasons and I think they’re necessary for all excellent teachers. She loved her subject, and she loved us, in a patient and objective way. She had no favorites that I can remember, and she called us all by our first names pleasantly. She had a way of teaching that I loved. “Now we could go down this path, couldn’t we? We could argue this, and then this, but that doesn’t work because of this. No Can Do (NCD)!” She would put a big cross, and write “NCD” against what she had put down. “Right! Why not go down this new path?” And she would show us that this new way worked. It was fun and her love for maths caught on. We all did well for her, the poor students as well as the skilled. I’ve never found maths difficult, and I put that skill own to her. In fourth and fifth years, we divided into the science and arts streams, and Mrs Lindsay didn’t teach us any more. But as the Leaving Certificate exams were coming, one of my friends became nervous about how much maths he didn’t know. With great courage, he went to see Mrs Lindsay, and asked if she would help him prepare for his General Maths paper. “Of course!” she said, and did just that, after school, in her own time. He passed. What a good teacher! 4. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. What Mrs Lindsay was like. B. How Mrs Lindsay started her class. C. How Mrs Lindsay treated her students. D. Generous and careful. C Teenagers’ fitness is now a major concern, to which physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: “First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier. ” Dr. Lopez points out that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level. According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should keep active to keep healthy. “Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories.” Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” said Dr. Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers. Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These are really important in order to prevent injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength. 8. Which of the following statements is NOT the reason why physical exercise is important? A. It can make the teenagers grow taller. B. It can help teenagers become healthier. C. It can help to burn up calories. D. It can increase teenagers’ strength. 9. What can we learn from the passage? A. Active people always have a high fitness level. B. Overweight people always take more exercise. C. Inactive teenagers are not seriously overweight. D. Keeping fit means changing teenagers’ lifestyle. 10. In order to prevent injuries you should do some ________ exercises. A. walking B. stretching and bending C. riding D. weight-training 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. Doing exercises B. Teenagers’ Fitness C. Different Lifestyles D. Overweight Teenagers D Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B⁺, compared to a B⁻ for those who did not. “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.” But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. 12 What do the students start worrying about before an exam? A. Whether they can pass the exam. B. What other students do during the test. C. Whether they have remembered the materials. D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper. 13. What is the solution developed by researchers? A Making the students focused on the test. B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test. C. Having the students write about their worries about the test. D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test. 14. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________. A. became less nervous before the test B did worse than those who wrote about their feelings C. were better at controlling their feelings D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings 15. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________. A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room before an exam D. it doesn’t matter where and when we write about our worries before an exam 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you often compare yourself to other people? 12. What do the students start worrying about before an exam? A. Whether they can pass the exam. B. What other students do during the test. C. Whether they have remembered the materials. D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper. 13. What is the solution developed by researchers? A. Making the students focused on the test. B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test. C. Having the students write about their worries about the test. D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test. 14. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________. A. became less nervous before the test B. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings C. were better at controlling their feelings D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings 15. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________. A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room before an exam D. it doesn’t matter where and when we write about our worries before an exam 【答案】12.
