HOW TO… The Junior Planet Dec. 2024
How to bank a seed!
Scientists are working to save the world’s plants from dying out. Storing a seed correctly can make its life longer by hundreds of years. Just like a regular bank, a seed bank is a safe place to save for the future. But this special vault contains seeds, not money!
Find out how the scientists do it…
① Collection
Successful seed banking starts with collecting! Along with the seeds, scientists must gather essential information about the plants’ location and the time of year they were gathered.
→
② Drying out
The drying room is a lot less humid than a regular room. Depending on a seed’s size, it’ll stay here for between two weeks and six months, slowly drying out.
↓
③ Into the vault
It’s now time for most of the seeds to go into the vault! They’re stored in air-tight containers at -20℃ in underground rooms. If all goes to plan, they should survive for hundreds of years.
↓
←
④ Clean up & X-rays
They are either cleaned by hand or with a machine that removes dirt and damaged seeds. Then, an X-ray machine examines a sample of the seeds to check what percentage of them are damaged, empty or have bugs inside!
⑤ Testing time
After a few months, a sample will be tested to see if they’ve survived. Scientists take a careful note of the best ways to germinate each seed so that they can be grown successfully by scientists of the future.
→
⑥ The nursery
Once the sample seeds have germinated and flowered, it will be used to confirm whether the seed was. labelled correctly in step one. If it is right, the seeds can be used for important scientific projects.
I once ran a project with eight professional tree climbers. It took them 1.5 hours to climb each of these huge trees! The pine cones at the top of the trees are at least 30m up! Luckily, I got to stay on the ground, checking the cones’ quality.
Here is a pine cone I recorded. It looks perfect.

Did you know that sign language also has “dialects (方言)”? Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters (翻译) are there to help.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her mother tongue, as her parents are deaf. “I picked up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law firm in Chongqing. Her work takes her to places like courts, where she interprets for deaf people in legal cases.
Since sign language has fewer words, Hao often meets difficult legal terms (法律条款) that have no direct match. In such situations, she carefully breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the words ‘put out a fire’ are signed as ‘a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first,’’ Hao explained.
Hao feels ________ at work because accuracy is important in legal interpretations. Her anxiety also comes from the fact that sign language has “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word ‘true’,” Hao explained. Having travelled to over 30 cities in China, she has learned about the unique (独特) ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf coworkers to improve her professional skills. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.

D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) : (12分)
Having travelled to over 30 cities in China, she has learned about the unique (独特的) ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf coworkers to improve her professional skills. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.

Dear Mr. Wang,
I choose to be a Chinese paper cutting artist because this traditional art carries good wishes and is easy to attract classmates.
As the artist, I’ll create zodiac-themed paper cuttings first. Then I’ll hold a short workshop to teach basic skills, like cutting “fu”. Finally, I’ll display our works in the hall. This lets more students enjoy this traditional art.
Hope my ideas help!
Li Hua
