This discovery is changing our understanding of forests, showing they are far more than just many trees growing in one place. The study explains that trees are connected by a special web under the ground. This web is made of their roots and a kind of fungi (真菌), which acts like a natural internet, often called the “Wood Wide Web”. When a tree is attacked (侵害) by insects or is short of water, it doesn’t stay in silence. Instead, it sends out special messages to tell other trees about the danger through this web. Nearby trees that receive these messages will quickly start making special things to protect themselves. What’s more, the help doesn’t stop there. In the forest, there are larger, older trees, called “mother trees”, which play an important role. They are often the most connected centre in the web and will even share valuable nutrients (营养素) and water with younger trees through their roots and the fungi, giving them a better chance to grow better. This exciting discovery teaches us a very important lesson about nature. It helps us understand why it’s important to protect whole forest ecosystems, not just focusing on single trees. When we cut down too many trees, we break their communication and support (支持) webs. Then, they cannot help each other when there is a big storm, a tree sickness, or other problems like climate change. Life becomes much harder for them. The research team leader, Dr. Wang, shared his thoughts on the bigger lesson: “This teaches us a beautiful lesson about working together and community. Just like trees that support each other unconditionally (无条件地), we humans should also work together to protect our environment. Every tree matters in a forest, just as every person matters in our society.” This finding reminds us that we are part of an interconnected world, and our future depends on learning from the wisdom of nature. 23.How do trees mainly “talk” to each other according to the study? A.By sending messages through the air. B.By changing the color of their leaves. C.Through their roots and a special web under the ground. 24.What do “mother trees” do to help younger trees? A.Give them more sunlight. B.Share nutrients through their roots. C.Protect them from strong winds. 25.What does Dr. Wang mainly want to tell us? A.Cutting down trees is important for making cities bigger. B.Humans should learn from trees and work together. C.Older people are always wiser than young people. 26.Which of the following best describes the purpose (目的) of the passage? A.To explain how fungi help trees grow. B.To describe the dangers forests are facing. C.To tell us about a scientific discovery and its lesson on working together. 【答案】23.C 24.B 25.B 26.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了“森林中的树木可以‘交谈’”这一发现,以及该发现给我们的启示。 23.细节理解题。根据“The study explains that trees are connected by a special web under the ground. B The Amazing Discovery of Plant Communication A recent study from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中科院) has found a wonderful secret of the natural world: trees in a forest can actually “talk” to each other and work together to help each other stay healthy and grow. C Latimer, from Virginia, US, didn’t realize her laptop (笔记本电脑) was missing until she got home. At first, she thought the taxi driver might have found it and kept it safe. But when she called the taxi company, they said the driver hadn’t seen it. Latimer remembered using her laptop on a street in Woodbridge. She called the police in her area, but they couldn’t help—the street was outside their jurisdiction (管辖范围). Latimer didn’t stop searching. She posted messages online for help. Latimer’s neighbour, Moorad, bought a second-hand laptop a few days ago. When he heard about Latimer’s story, he checked his new laptop—and to his surprise, the serial number (序列号) matched hers. “Latimer was so happy on the phone,” Moorad said. They met soon after. Even though Moorad had paid $600 for the laptop, he gave it back to her without thinking twice. “She wanted to give me money, but I couldn’t take it—the laptop was hers,” Moorad explained. “I just did what was right.” Moorad’s kindness moved Latimer deeply. She shared the story online, writing, “I was so happy. It was the kindest thing someone has done for me in years.” Moorad’s act reminded everyone that even small kindnesses can make a big difference. 27.Which of the following did Latimer do first to find her lost laptop? Why does this happen? 31 A Birds are flying into windows and tall buildings that are all covered by glass. Many birds fly from one place to another. Most of the time, they live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands(湿地). 32   They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and want to rest on these plants. The birds do not know there is glass between them and the plants. 33 Some birds fly at night. They use the moon and stars to help guide them in the right direction. Tall buildings with lights on at night can confuse (迷惑) the birds. 34 The birds see the light, but they cannot tell that the light is coming from inside a building.
