For swimmers and music lovers, the Underwater Music Festival (UMF) is too good to miss. Unlike a common concert, UMF is underwater at Looe Key Reef in North America.
UMF takes place every year on the first Saturday after July 4. Every year, hundreds of people get together and take part in the festival, not only for fun but also for environmental protection. Bill Becker, the creator of UMF, started the underwater music festival as a way to get knowledge for coral reef (珊瑚礁) protection.
Listeners dress as sea animals, jump into the water and enjoy the underwater concerts. The music list includes many famous songs about the sea. People play the songs through waterproof speakers (防水扬声器). As a matter of fact, sound travels about 4.5 times faster through water than in the air. So the special listening makes listeners happy, comfortable and peaceful. They have a great time experiencing this wonderful event.
At the same time, people can get close to coral reefs. However, it’s very important to know that people must not touch coral reefs or leave litter underwater while swimming. Mr. Bill said, “Water pollution influences coral reefs seriously. The more people know the importance of coral reefs, the more they want to protect them. That is what we are doing.”

Scientists find out African giant pouched rats (非洲巨颊囊鼠) can help the policemen. The rats are learning to help find wildlife products. These products are from the bodies of wild animals. It’s against the law, but some people still do it because they can make a lot of money. The rats have learned to recognise the smell of the products, and can tell people where to find the products. This way could help protect wild animals.
Stopping buying and selling wild animals is hard. The sellers (销售者们) usually hide the animal parts. They may paint an elephant’s tooth black. They may hide it under something else in a box. They also try to hide the smell with strong smells like coffee.
A group called APOPO thinks that African giant pouched rats are clever. These rats are the world’s largest rats, about one meter long with tails. They learn quickly, and have a strong sense of smell. The rats can remember the smells, even after months. In the past, these rats helped find out diseases, and searched for people after earthquakes. In a recent study, 8 rats successfully finished the task. This could be a great way to help keep the animals safe.

Scientists have known for a long time that plants can hear sounds. For example, flowers make sweeter nectar (花蜜) when they hear bees buzzing. Now, scientists in Israel think plants might also “talk”.
Professor Lilach Hadany and her team at Tel Aviv University used microphones to record tomato plants in different situations. They found the plants made ultrasonic (超声波的) sounds. Then the researchers slowed down the recordings so that humans could hear them, and they heard sharp clicks. The researchers also found that plants hardly clicked when they had much water. But when the soil was dry, they clicked more. If a stem was cut off, they clicked more, too, but differently from when they needed water. It is known that plants make noise, especially when they are scared.
Researchers trained an AI system to recognise the different clicks. It could tell if a plant needed water or had cuts about 70% of the time. This suggests we might use plant sounds to know if they have problems. It could help farmers.
Do plants make sounds to talk to each other? Some research shows that plants send chemicals into the air when insects (昆虫) attack them, telling nearby plants to make chemicals that taste bad to drive away insects. The clicks might work the same way.
12. How did the researchers make humans hear the plant sounds?
A. They used new recordings.
B. They changed another microphone.
C. They made the recordings slow.
D. They watered the plants.
13. What does the underlined word “attack” mean in the last paragraph?
A. collect B. hurt C. clean D. help
14. What do scientists think plants might be able to do when they meet trouble?
A. Plants might be able to grow faster.
B. Plants might be able to change colors.
C. Plants might be able to communicate with others.
D. Plants might be able to produce more fruit.
15. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A geography textbook. B. A storybook.
C. A tour guidebook. D. A science magazine.
Ⅲ. Complete the Passage(5小题,每小题1分,共5分)

Dear Lucy,
How are you doing? I’m Li Hua. My classmates and I are going to the nursing home to spend the Double Ninth Festival with the old people there. The Double Ninth Festival is the day for the elderly in our Chinese culture.
Here are some details about this activity. To begin with, we will leave from our school at 8 o’clock this Sunday morning and return at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. At the nursing home, we plan to make dumplings with the elderly first—they love this traditional activity. Then we'll give a performance, like singing folk songs and telling stories. We’ll also chat with them to listen to their life experiences, which will make them feel warm.
I expect this activity to let the elderly feel cared for I’m looking forward to your reply.
