Ever since my daughter Gabi was just a young child, she has been curious about the world around her, always ready to ask “why” and “how” questions. I thought it could be fun to talk to my daughter about female scientists. I discovered there was a scientist, Ada Lovelace. She had a love for mathematics and a belief that computers can be used to finish many tasks humans do. I told Gabi about Lovelace's contributions to the field and the impact she had on me as a scientist and mathematician.
Today, computers are such an essential part of our daily lives; we can’t imagine living without them. The idea that computers can go beyond just calculating numbers and perform any abstract operation is the phenomenon of our technology. However, not everyone knows that this idea dates back to long before the first programmable, general-purpose digital computer was introduced in the 1940s. This concept goes back to the 1800s, thanks to Loveluce, a pioneer in mathematics and computing, who was recognized as the first computer programmer.
Lovelace also held her belief that while computers had endless potential, they could not be truly intelligent. She argued that AI can’t create anything original without learning from human input. This is still true today as AI becomes increasingly common in our everyday lives. While ChatGPT and similar AI tools may seem to have a “mind” of their own, those tools are simply parroting human-generated content on the internet.
Lovelace was an incredibly intelligent woman, who contributed so much to mathematics and computer science. Her enthusiasm and determination led her to look further and search deeper. I hope Loyelace will inspire my daughter and other young girls to consider following in her footsteps.
24. What can be learned about Gabi?
A. She has great admiration for Lovelace. B. She has a dream of becoming a scientist.
C. She shows strong curiosity about the world. D. She believes computers are as smart as humans.
25. What does the author stress in paragraph 2?
A. The invention of computers. B. Lovelace’s contribution to science.
C. The development of technology. D. Lovelace’s education background.
26. What does the underlined word “parroting” in paragraph 3 mean?
A Repeating. B. Creating. C. Appreciating. D. Imagining.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To show her interest in science. B. To explain the significance of computers.
C. To provide an example for girls to follow. D. To demonstrate the disadvantage of computers.
C
As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.
There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.
A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.
Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.
The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.
The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.
28. Why does the author mention his childhood experience?
A. To show how his character changed.
B. To explain what he was like when he was young.
C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication.
D. To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.
29. What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?
A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless.
30. What do we know about the liking gap from the text?
A. It indicates what strangers really think of us.
B. It begins and ends quickly among strangers.
C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other.
D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.
31. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
A. People Like You More than You Know
B. How to Get Along Well with Strangers
C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us
D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
D
A smoke bomb from a party started a major blaze (火焰) near Los Angeles in September, just one of many recent wildfires ignited (引燃) by people. Now, an analysis of satellite data shows human-caused blazes spread much faster and kill more trees than ones ignited by lightning.
Fire has always been a part of California’s natural history. But several centuries of human settlement have created new conditions that promote its spread.Studies have shown human ignition is to blame for 84% of all wildfires in the United States, and 97% of all those that threaten homes.
Human-caused fires always seemed more extreme, says Stijn Hantson,a fire ecologist at the University of California,Irvine, who led the new research. But measurements of how fast they spread and their impacts on ecosystems (生态系统) in California had not been explored, he notes.
To examine those differences, Hantson and his colleagues analyzed satellite data for 214 wildfires in California between 2012 and 2018.Human-caused fires typically spread about 1.83 kilometers per day, more than twice as fast as lightning-ignited burns, the team reports. The faster spreading fires also burned more violently and killed “double or triple” the trees as lightning-caused ones.
However, there is no fundamental difference in the chemistry of a human-caused blaze. “A fire is a fire” Hantson says. “It’s the surrounding things that matter.” Causes of fires ranging from improperly thrown cigarettes to sparking (冒火花) power lines could ignite a blaze on any given day, he says, while lightning strikes and dry thunderstorms only happen seasonally.
The researchers tracked meteorological data and found that human-caused fires were more likely to start on days with extreme weather conditions, and were more associated with drier,less-forested landscapes. This adds to scientists’ understanding of how humans are extending the fire season, says Nathan Mietkiewicz, an ecologist with the National Ecological Observation Network.
32. The author uses some data in paragraph 2 to show that ________.
A. wildfires are mostly caused by humans
B. most wildfires threaten people’s homes
C. wildfire is a part of California’s natural history
D. wildfires break out frequently in the United States
33. What’s the purpose of Hantson’s research?
A. To prove how extreme human-caused fires are.
B. To find out the causes and solutions of wildfires.
C. To explore the speed and effects of wildfires caused by humans.
D. To examine the differences between a human-caused blaze and a nature-caused one.
34. How is the result presented in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing cause and effect.
D. By giving definitions.
35. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Human-caused fires and lightning-caused fires are basically different.
B. Lightning strikes and thunderstorms can always lead to wildfires.
C. Wildfires only happen in dry,less-forested areas.
D. Humans are to blame for the extended fire season.

___39___ Once you've had time to cool down and think things through, you may clearly explain to the other person, in a calm manner, how his actions have hurt you and how they have made you feel. A. Get angry at someone.
B. Tell the other person how you feel.

W: Hello ladies and gentlemen. Today we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone.
M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their eighties. They were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them and many older Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.
W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age?
M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today I’d like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles the elderly can play and should play in our society.

C. A role model in her family.
A 19. B 20. B
W: Talking about personal relationships. Well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

A. Repeating. B. Creating. C. Appreciating. D. Imagining.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To show her interest in science. B. To explain the significance of computers.
C. To provide an example for girls to follow. D. To demonstrate the disadvantage of computers.
C 25. B 26. A 27. C

根据文章第二段“However, not everyone knows that this idea dates back to long before the first programmable, general-purpose digital computer was introduced in the 1940s. This concept goes back to the 1800s, thanks to Loveluce, a pioneer in mathematics and computing, who was recognized as the first computer programmer.(然而,并不是每个人都知道,这个想法可以追溯到20世纪40年代第一台可编程的通用数字计算机问世之前很久。这个概念可以追溯到19世纪,多亏了Loveluce,数学和计算的先驱,她被认为是第一个计算机程序员)”可推知,此段强调了Lovelace对科学的贡献。故选B。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段的“Lovelace also held her belief that while computers had endless potential, they could not be truly intelligent. She argued that AI can’t create anything original without learning from human input 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“I hope Loyelace will inspire my daughter and other young girls to consider following in her footsteps.(我希望Lovelace能够激励我的女儿和其他年轻女孩考虑追随她的脚步)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是为了提供一个女孩们可以效仿的榜样。故选C。
30 What do we know about the liking gap from the text?
C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us
D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
C 29. B 30. D 31. A

A 33. C 34. B 35. D

How to Forgive Someone
Forgiving someone who has done something wrong and hurt you can be difficult and painful. ___36___ While this is natural, holding on to your anger causes you to become more painful. For this reason, it is necessary to choose to forgive, not for the other person, but for yourself. The following suggestions will help you forgive someone.
Release your anger. Let go of all the negative feelings you have towards the other person. Allow yourself to cry, go into nature, and talk to someone you trust, or do whatever helps you release these bad feelings. ___37___
Give it time. Forgiveness does not come easily. ___38___ It is something that can be realized little by little every day.
___39___ Once you've had time to cool down and think things through, you may clearly explain to the other person, in a calm manner, how his actions have hurt you and how they have made you feel. This is very important, or you will bottle up feelings of anger towards the other person, making true forgiveness impossible.
Focus on the future. Once you have made the decision to forgive someone, you need to forget the past and focus on the future. ___40___ It might be just what your relationship needs.
A. Get angry at someone.
B. Tell the other person how you feel.
C. Your first reaction is probably to hold on to your anger.
D. It requires self-control, determination and, above all, time.
E. Look on the bright side of the future and make a fresh start.
F. If not, the bad feelings will cause you to become more painful.
G. It's unnecessary to rebuild a relationship with anyone or let him go.
C 37. F 38. D 39. B 40. E
While this is natural, holding on to your anger causes you to become more painful.

Allow yourself to cry, go into nature, and talk to someone you trust, or do whatever helps you release these bad feelings. 上文中these bad feelings可对应F选项中the bad feelings。
Forgiveness does not come easily.
Once you've had time to cool down and think things through, you may clearly explain to the other person, in a calm manner, how his actions have hurt you and how they have made you feel.
Focus on the future. Once you have made the decision to forgive someone, you need to forget the past and focus on the future.
