What are the basic ingredients (要素) of good manners? A strong sense of fairness is one of them.
A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane (单行小路), unpaved (未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust (呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road. My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “No,” said the other driver. “But you’ve endured my dust so far. I’ll endure yours the rest of the way.”
Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He pretended (假装) to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally, he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool. Yet another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike (一视同仁). No matter who he is and what he does, everyone is worth respecting.

Walking slowly out of the classroom by himself to the dining room, taking his lunch, sitting and eating alone at a table of four seats, Peter. He spends most of his school time on his own, which leads his parents to worry about him so much.
His parents’ worries are easy to understand. It is widely accepted that being alone is a symbol of being left out and can bring a lot of trouble. Most people believe teenagers who are usually alone do have few friends and are unable to fit in with other people. At the same time, they are at greater risk of having mental (心理的) problems.
However, a new study by some researchers at Wilmington College, shows that this may not always be true. Whether it is bad for teenagers or not depends on the reasons why teenagers are alone. If it is their choice, it may play an active role in their personal growth.
According to their study, when teenagers choose to think alone, they put 100% of their attention into what is in their mind and are more likely to experience deeper thoughts and feelings than working with others. They may have a greater chance to create something new. In this way, they can better develop their creativity (创造力).
On the other hand, the ongoing noise children’s brains receive every day can put great stress on them and make it hard for them to focus (专注). Being alone lets them shut themselves off from the noisy outside world and think about what’s best for them. Slowly, they improve their ability to focus.
As a matter of fact, our culture is always biased against being alone. Maybe it is the right time for us to rethink about Peter’s situation before we say what’s happening to him.
13. Peter’s parents worry about him because ________.
A. he has few friends B. they think he may be left out
C. he’s not good at study D. he often argues with his teachers
14. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Peter spends most of his school time on his own because he doesn’t like making friends.
B. Teenagers who enjoy being alone are at greater risk of having mental problems.
C. Teenagers who choose to be alone may have better attention to do things they like.
D. Teenagers may have a greater chance to create something new when they have more friends.
15. What does the underlined word “biased” mean?
A. 反对的 B. 有偏见的 C. 乐观的 D. 无视的
16. What may be the best title of this passage?
A. New Positive Functions (积极作用) of Loneliness

【14题详解】

【15题详解】

What Do You Feel Like Watching Today?
While some people stick to only one kind of movies, I like to watch different kinds depending on how I feel that day.
When I’m down or tired, I prefer movies that can cheer me up. Comedies and cartoons have funny dialog and usually have a happy ending. The characters may not be perfect, but they try their best to solve their problems. After I watch them, my problems suddenly seem less serious and I feel much better again. Laughing for two hours is a good way to relax!
I don’t watch dramas or documentaries when I’m sad or tired. Dramas make me feel even sadder. Documentaries can be interesting. But when I’m tired I don’t want to think too much. I don’t mind action movies when I’m too tired to think. I can just shut off my brain, sit back and enjoy watching an exciting superhero who always saves the world just in time.
Once in a while, I like to watch movies that are scary. They can be fun, but I’m too scared to watch them alone. I always bring a friend who isn’t afraid of this kind of movies, and it doesn’t feel so scary anymore.

Teenagers should be allowed to develop a hobby. A hobby can give you different types of challenges. You’ll need to find different interests and decide which hobby really interests you. You can take up a hobby that can challenge your physically, such as rock climbing or surfing. However, this may be hard to do. Here are four great reasons to work it in.
Hobbies help build a teenager’s confidence. By finding an area of interest, a teenager can build his skill. This lead to positive results and builds their confidence.
A hobby helps teens have a sense of his identity. Our likes and dislikes help us know who we are as people. Hobbies help by sending a signal, “I like doing this. This makes me feel good. Therefore, this is a part of who I am.”
Hobbies keep teenagers from getting bored. Bored teenagers look for things to do and are more likely to do something bad. Helping teenagers develop a hobby is helping them stay out of trouble.

Another ingredient is empathy (同情心) It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else.
9. The driver in the car ahead stopped to ________.
A. repair the car B. have a rest C. ask the way D. let the back car go

(D)
B. A Healthy Way of Life
C. How to Focus in Study
D. How to make more friends at school
