Arthur Lih of Massapequa sold his first LifeVac, a device to help save people's life, to a fire department about 18 months ago, when the Jericho Fire Department purchased 21 of the devices. Now about 10 fire departments in Long Island have purchased Lih's invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when methods such as the Heimlich manoeuvre(海姆利希急救法) don't work. He has sold about 5,000 LifeVac devices in the United States and abroad since the device went on the market in August 2014.
The Freeport Fire Department is one of Lih's clients. “We bought about 25 LifeVac devices to put on trucks, as well as in chiefs' vehicles,” said Ray Maguire, the department's executive director. “It's an extra tool in the toolbox,” Maguire said. “I'd be surprised if anyone who sees it doesn't purchase it. It's that tool you may only need once, but it's the tool you really want in case you need it. It's affordable. I have it in my car. I have one at home, too.”
Dr. Lee Smith at Northwell Health said that if a choking victim can't breathe, he or she becomes a candidate for the Heimlich. If the Heimlich doesn't work, the victim would probably lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen.
A challenge for any new medical device is convincing potential users that it works and is safe. In tests, the LifeVac successfully removed an obstruction from the throat of a dead human body on the first try 49 out of 50 times, according to an August research article in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Lih's invention was inspired by a story he had heard of — a woman weeping over her young son who had choked to death on a grape.

First aid is crucial in emergency situations as it provides immediate care and assistance to individuals who have been injured or are in trouble.
The basic objective of first aid is its life-saving potential. Emergencies often unfold unexpectedly and can quickly become deadly without immediate action. First aid serves as that critical initial response, providing care vital for the survival of a victim of injury or illness. Before professional medical help arrives, first aid can maintain extremely important bodily functions and prevent the situation from worsening during this critical period.
First aid isn't just about dealing with life-threatening situations but is also crucial in managing non-life-threatening conditions that may cause serious pain or discomfort. This can involve many injuries, from small cuts to burns. A trained first aider has the skills to provide immediate care for these conditions, relieving pain and making the victim more comfortable until professional help is available or necessary.
One of the critical aspects of first aid is the prevention of further injury or illness. When a medical emergency occurs, the situation or environment might pose additional risks to the victim. A trained first aider knows how to manage these situations to protect the individual from further harm. For example, in the case of a car accident, they might need to move the injured person away from the wreckage (残骸) if there's a risk of explosion or fire.
The promptness (敏捷) and efficiency of first aid can directly influence the speed and efficacy(效力)of the recovery process. By providing immediate care, first aid can reduce the severity of an injury or illness, promoting quicker recovery. For example, when properly cleaned and dressed immediately after an injury, a wound is less likely to get infected, ensuring a quicker healing process. This also minimizes the risk of future damage like tissue damage.
1.What does the author imply in paragraph 2?( )
A.All emergencies are a great threat to people's life.
B.First aid takes the place of professional medical help.
C.First aid makes a big difference between life and death.
D.An experienced first aider can predict most emergencies.
2.What should trained first aiders do with non-life-threatening conditions?( )
A.Give the victims some painkillers.
B.Prevent the victims from moving around.
C.Send the victims to the hospital right away.
D.Offer basic care and comfort to the victims.
3.Why does the author mention a car accident in paragraph 4?( )
A.To stress the critical role of first aid.
B.To show the danger of car accidents.
C.To give the reasons for further injuries.
D.To explain people's actions in accidents.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?( )
A.Methods of promoting a quicker recovery.
B.Ways of cleaning and dressing the wound.
C.The importance of quick and effective first aid.
D.The key to reducing the risk of future damage.
