Days of heavy rain caused dangerous flooding in central Texas on Friday. The Guadalupe River overflowed, flooding neighborhoods and washing away roads and bridges. Hundreds of people had to leave their homes. Officials say this is the worst flooding the region has seen in years. Below is the breakdown of damages by county.
County
Economic Losses
Buildings Damaged
Hunt
$28 million
85 (including 12 historic structures)
Kerr
$15 million
62 (including 3 bridges, 2 historic buildings)
Comal
$5 million
34 (including 2 highways)
Blanco
$2 million
18 (including 1 historic building)
Below were key updates as of Friday night.
1. Casualties & Emergency Response
The floods have killed 24 people, and 25 campers from Camp Mystic remain missing as searches continue. Emergency crews including the Texas National Guard have rescued 237 people using helicopters supported by over 500 personnel from federal agencies (including FEMA and the U.S. Coast Guard) that are currently assisting in affected areas.
2. Challenges
Rescue teams struggled to reach isolated communities as flooded roads and downed power lines blocked access, delaying critical aid. To make matters worse, early weather warnings had underestimated the flood's severity, leaving residents little time to reach safety.
3. Government Response
Governor Greg Abbott issued an emergency disaster declaration for 15 central Texas counties, accelerating state funding for recovery efforts. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick noted communication outages likely delayed locating missing campers.
4. Recovery Outlook
The Red Cross has set up 12 shelters, helping more than 1,200 displaced families. Environmental agencies warn that flooded factories could cause pollution. Meanwhile, transportation officials say highway repairs may take weeks.
1. Which county was most severely affected in the floods?
A. Hunt. B. Kerr. C. Comal. D. Blanco.
2. How many people have been saved by emergency crews as of Friday night?
A. 49. B. 237. C. 500. D. 1200.
3. What did Governor Greg Abbott do in response to the disaster?
A. Ordered search-and-rescue operations.
B. Raised emergency funds for recovery.
C. Established shelters for affected families.
D. Declared a state of emergency disaster.

When you’re bored, do you start scanning through short videos? That might not ease your boredom. According to a recent study, switching between videos or fast-forwarding through them can bore you even more.
Boredom is an uncomfortable emotion which can develop when a situation lacks newness or meaning. But it serves a purpose. Boredom signals that there is something more pleasurable to do. This can motivate people to explore their environment and stop investing time in an activity that has little to offer.
Katy Y. Y. Tam, from the University of Toronto Scarborough in Canada, is a scientist and psychologist. In 2021, Tam developed a theory called the “Boredom Feedback Model”, stating that boredom happens when your attention shifts from one thing to another. This type of boredom can happen when people start watching one online video, then, fast-forward or skip to the next one.
Tam ran experiments with more than 1,200 people, and showed that people switched to new videos when they were bored. These people believed switching videos would make them less bored. But the result was just the opposite.
In one experiment, people watched a single video for 10 minutes. Next, scientists asked them to watch seven shorter videos, with the ability to skip to the next. On average, people skipped eight times. When skipping around, people reported feeling more bored, less satisfied, and less engaged than when they fully watched a single video.
Growing evidence shows that boredom is on the rise. Bored people often turn to their phones, but report being more bored. Psychology professor Michael Inzlicht, who worked on the study with Tam, said he had been fascinated by rising boredom in recent years. He thought it could be due to a lack of concentration. “When you’re absorbed, you don’t feel bored. When your attention is spread, you’re almost by definition not satisfied,” Inzlicht said.
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Signals of boredom. B. A positive aspect of boredom.
C. The purpose of the experiments. D. Motivations of the experiments.
5. According to the “Boredom Feedback Model”, what causes boredom?
A Mind-engaging tasks. B. Changing focus constantly.
C. Watching online videos. D. Time-consuming activities.
6. What would people generally expect when skipping videos?
A. Boredom would be killed. B. Self-satisfaction would be achieved.
C. Attention would be enhanced. D. More information would be obtained.
7. According to Michael Inzlicht, which of the following behavior would help avoid boredom?
A. Limiting the time of screen use.
B. Aimlessly adopting different activities.
C. Engaging in attention-demanding tasks.
D. Frequently shifting learning subjects in a short time.

A recent study by Australian and other researchers described what could happen if targets to limit global temperature increases are not met.
Nerilie Abram is a professor at the Australian National University’s Research School of Earth Sciences. She warned that the melting of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet could be catastrophic, Abram said, “By 2500, Fast Antarctica could contribute up to 5 meters of sea level rises on top of the sea level rise that we will already have had from Greenland and West Antarctica.” The East Antarctic Ice Sheet holds the majority of world’s glacier ice. It was thought to be less affected by worldwide temperature rises compared to the ice sheet in West Antarctica or Greenland.
The study by Abram and other researchers says that if the temperature rise is limited to 2 degrees Celsius, the East Antarctic Ice Sheet should remain stable. In other words, it should remain generally the same size. But the researchers warn that warmer temperatures could cause more melting and increase worldwide sea level by many meters. Abram said, “It gives us even more of a reason to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to not exceed that 2-degree warming level.” The Paris Climate Agreement, signed in 2015, aims to limit global warming to under 2 degrees Celsius.
Another Antarctica study published in Nature drew from research by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California. The scientists found that the edge of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet has been losing ice faster than natural processes can replace it.
Eric Wolff is a professor at the University of Cambridge in Britain. He said of the JPL study, “if we keep to the 2 degrees of global warming that the Paris agreement promises, the sea level rise due to the East Antarctic ice sheet should be modest.” But, he said, failure to limit global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, would risk “many meters of sea level rise over the next few centuries.”
8. What can be concluded from the second paragraph?
A. Worldwide temperature rises when glacier ice melts.
B. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet will melt down by 2500.
C. Greenland and West Antarctica already causes sea level rise.
D. World’s glacier ice mostly stays in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
9. What does the underlined word “catastrophic” in the second paragraph mean?
A. disastrous B. disappointing C. exciting D. delicious
10. What should we do according to Eric Wolff?
A. Limit global warming and increase greenhouse gas emissions.
B. Keep to the goal of the Paris agreement promises.
C. Risk many meters of sea level rise in the future.
D. Make the East Antarctic ice sheet modest.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet determines our future
B. Researchers: world’s largest ice sheet risks melting
C. East Antarctica will lead to 5 meters of sea level rises
D. The Paris Climate Agreement’s 2 degrees Celsius limit
D
They say you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. But when it comes to tackling a tricky task, researchers have found that getting angry can also be a powerful motivator.
The experiments suggest people who are angry perform better on a set of challenging tasks than those who are emotionally neutral.
The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, details how researchers at Texas A&M University conducted experiments involving more than 1,000 people, and analysed survey data from more than 1,400 people to explore the possible impact of anger on people in various circumstances.
In one experiment, students were shown images previously found to cause anger, desire, amusement, sadness or no particular emotion at all. Participants were subsequently asked to solve a series of anagrams (变形词).
The results reveal that for a challenging set of anagrams, those who were angry did better — although no difference was seen for easy anagrams.
The researchers say one explanation could be down to a link between anger and greater persistence (坚持), with the team finding those who were angry spent more time on the difficult set of anagrams.
In another experiment participants who were angry did better at avoiding flags in a skiing video game than those who were neutral or sad, and were on a par with (同水平) those who felt amusement or desire.
“This pattern could indicate that general physical arousal (激起) had a benefit for game scores, as this would be greater in anger, amused, and desire conditions compared to the sad and neutral conditions,” the researchers write. However, no such differences in performance was found when it came to an easier video game.
“People often prefer to use positive emotions as tools more than negative and tend to see negative emotions as undesirable,” said Lench, the first author of the study. “Our research adds to the growing evidence that a mix of positive and negative emotions promotes wellbeing, and that using negative emotions as tools can be particularly effective in some situations.”
12. What tasks did the researchers set for the students?
A. Catching flies with honey.
B. Helping analyze survey data.
C. Putting tasks into different categories.
D. Performing tasks in various emotional states.
13. Why does anger enable people to perform better on challenging tasks?
A. It brings team spirit into full play.
B. It promotes a deep insight into the tasks.
C. It increases effort toward attaining a goal.
D. It changes challenging tasks into easy ones.
14. What are paragraphs 7 and 8 mainly about?
A. Research result consistent with previous findings.
B. Potential application of the research finding.
C. A further explanation of the research method.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
15. What does Lench intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To present more proofs. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To make a comparison. D. To criticize old practices.

Ben raced out of school. Christmas holidays! When he got home, he went to check on his pony, Scout. He slipped him a candy, and Scout nuzzled(用口鼻轻擦)his shoulder. Ben started toward the house and found his older brother Jack starting the snowmobile(雪地机动车)to deliver gas to Uncle Mike. Ben jumped on the back and joined him.
They set of slowly. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. When they arrived, Jack went over with the gas can. Ben looked up the mountain and saw something moving. He got binoculars(望远镜)and saw two animals. Could it be a horse? Jack climbed back on the snowmobile and asked Ben to leave. When Ben told Jack he saw horses up in the snowy trees, Jack didn't believe it. Ben looked back up the mountain, but he couldn't see anything.
At dinner Ben told his father he saw two horses up on the mountain today. “If they are horses, they must be trapped by all this snow." said his dad. "If they're trapped, we have to do something," said Ben, his voice rising.
His dad looked at Jack. "Well, in the morning go and take a look. Take the gun and some hay(干草). If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not…"Jack looked serious, and slowly nodded. Ben knew what the gun was for, and his chest went cold.
In the morning, they set off in the cold snow. When they got to the place where Ben had seen the horses, they stopped and looked up using binoculars. No horses. They waited for a few minutes.
"I see them. They' re horses. Let's take the snowmobile up there. "Ben suddenly exclaimed. They drove the snowmobile in the deep snow and finally reached the place. "Oh no!" said Ben "They're starving!" One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired.
Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.

Dear Ryan,
I’m more than delighted to hear that you’re planning to add a fun activity in our English class. After weighing both options, I prefer the “Three-minute presentation”. The reasons are as follows.
Firstly, this activity can improve our comprehensive language skills, because we need to organize ideas, express them clearly, and even answer possible questions, which is more practical for daily communication. Secondly, it helps build confidence. Speaking in front of the class makes us braver when using English in real life. Lastly, presentations can cover various topics, from hobbies to social issues, not only sparking students’ interest but also bringing fresh knowledge to the class.
Hope you can take my suggestions into consideration.

【答案】Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.Jack sighed and picked up the gun, pointing to the poor dying horse. One horse turned and looked at him and made a soft little noise. “We should try,” pleaded Ben. He walked around the horses again, patting on the neck of the big brown one, which made a sad, small groaning sound. Ben quickly got the hay off the back of the snowmobile and spread it around in piles. The horses ate hungrily, and Ben poured water into a pail for them. With one more pat to each horse, Jack and Ben climbed on the snowmobile and drove back down the mountain as quickly as they could to report their news.
Paragraph 2: The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They went from the hardware store to the gas station, where they put notices up asking for help. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. They worked for hours but only made a small dent in the snow. “This is hopeless,” said Jack. He leaned on his shovel and wiped his dripping nose. “Let’s go home. No one is going to help.” “We can’t give up,” said Ben. But his fingers were frozen, and his nose felt numb. Suddenly, a group of snowmobilers arrived with shovels and hot chocolate. They had followed Ben and Jack’s tracks up the trail. They tried everything they could to help the horse to stand up. With the effort of everyone around, the horses finally struggled to their feet. Unity is strength.
