It’s easy to know if the plate I’m washing is my grandfather’s — it will have no food left. He grew up practically licking his plate clean and still does it at almost 90 years of age. My younger brother is the exact opposite — there’s always food left over. The feel of warm water and the smooth feeling of dish soap on dinner plates are my quiet and safe place at the end of the day.
About a year ago, our family dishwasher broke. My dad had just left for a work trip, so I offered to do the dishes by hand to help my mom out who was always very busy.
At first, doing the dishes greatly annoyed me. I was in a rush to get them done since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student with many difficult classes. However, as silly as it might sound, the task of washing food leftovers off plates and pots soon caused a change in me. And when we did finally get the new dishwasher set up, I still continued to wash the dishes by hand after dinner, confusing my mother greatly.
I always start with the dinner plates. I have learned to turn them over and wash the bottom which, at times, will have dried-up food. Then I move to any bowls that have been used. I have learned to recognize the one slightly different bowl in our set. After the bowls, I turn my attention to the pots and pans used to cook and serve.
Washing dishes by hand, standing in the same spot every day, has been more calming and taught me more than I could have ever imagined. For about 15 minutes every day, I can slow down time and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focus on a simple task that would always result in success. Now I’m able to stop thinking about all my deadlines and enjoy the simplicity of a simple task.
29.Why did the writer start washing dishes by hand at first?
A.He just enjoyed washing dishes.
B.He wanted to help his busy mom.
C.He wanted to learn a new life skill.
D.His father told him to do it before leaving for a work trip.

C.It is a place in his house where no one can find him.
D.He feels safe from his grandfather and brother there.
31.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The way the writer washes dishes.
B.The benefits of washing dishes by hand.
C.The writer’s thoughts while washing dishes.
D.The writer’s feeling about doing housework.
32.What part of washing dishes does the writer like?
A.The chance to help his family.
B.The chance to do many things at once.
C.The importance of working with his hands.
D.The good feeling of completing an easy job.

Do you know the five main senses (感官) we have? They are touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing. They are controlled by different parts of our brains. Brains help our bodies work smoothly. Try this: close your eyes and touch your nose. It’s easy, right? That’s because our brains can receive messages about where our body parts are. We can also stand on one leg without falling down. If we lose our balance, our brains will give us orders to fix it.
Brains are also life-saving heroes. Tests show that people see spider pictures faster than flowers. Some researchers also found that people react (作出反应) to loud noises faster than to a friend’s voice. Some scientists believe that this skill might come from ancient times. Our ancestors (祖先) were often faced with predators. So they had to protect themselves from dangerous animals like spiders and tigers, or they would lose their lives.
Here is more about brains. Can you imagine seeing colors when you hear music, or tasting candy when you see the sunshine? It’s called sense mixing. Scientists think this happens when different senses intermingle (相互交织). Another fact is that temperature sometimes influences our senses. Some people can feel storms coming through knee pain (疼). So we often joke that we’re “human weather apps”. Also, our brains are able to make adjustment (调整) to some senses. If someone can’t see well, his hearing or touch might become stronger.
Though scientists have done much research on the brain, there’s still a lot to do. Have you ever wondered why some people are better at sports? What’s the secret to improving memory? Then it’s time for you to start your discovering journey.
33.What do the two examples in the first paragraph show?
A.Human brains are different. B.Brains help our bodies work well.
C.People have many living habits. D.Humans can touch their noses easily.
34.Which of the following animals is probably a “predator”?
A.A tiger. B.A giraffe. C.A butterfly. D.A rabbit.
35.According to Paragraph 3, what might happen if your senses mix?
A.You can tie your shoes without looking. B.You taste sweetness when seeing an apple.
C.You jump when someone shouts suddenly. D.You feel pain in your knees before the rain comes.
36.What is the writing purpose (目的) of the last paragraph?
A.To encourage brain studies. B.To improve people’s memory.
C.To show the importance of brains. D.To admire the scientists’ research.
D
Imagine you’re taking an exam, and then you find it difficult to answer those questions. And time’s running out. Will you waste the little chance that you get to cheat?
Certainly, it’s not correct. It’s important to follow the rules because the world would turn into a total mess without rules. However, with time passing by and society developing, some rules get in the way of people’s success. A famous person once said, “We have so many rules in life about everything. But it’s impossible to be a creator if you’re too well-behaved. You have to think outside the box.” Some rules are created to restrain (约束) people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules. In 1823, William Webb Ellis was tired of playing football in the old way, so the player took the ball in his arms and ran with it during a school football match. In this way, he started a new sport: rugby (英式橄榄球).
Since you’ve already known why someone wants to break the rules, now you need to learn how to do it.
Learn the rules first. Qi Baishi is an excellent Chinese artist, but he spent much time learning traditional drawing and painting skills before he found his own style. Know about it before you break it—that’s what you can learn from great minds.
Consider if the result is worth it. Each person has his own values. Before breaking the rules, think over whether it will go against your values. Try to make a right decision and you must be prepared for the bad results.
37.What does the writer think of rules according to the second paragraph?
A.Rules are made to help people. B.Most of the rules go against our values.
C.Some rules can stop people’s success. D.Rules should always remain the same.
38.What can we learn from Qi Baishi according to the passage?
A.We should realise the rules before we break them. B.It’s important to follow the rules.
C.We have to think outside the box. D.We should find our own ways first.
39.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.We can break the rules when we can’t face the bad results.
B.If we follow the rules all the time, we won’t come up with creative ideas.
C.Rugby was invented because William always lost the football games.
D.Rules don’t have to be in accord with (符合) our values.
40.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The World Needs Rules B.Think Outside the Box
C.Follow the Rules or Break the Rules? D.Think Twice Before Breaking the Rules
B)阅读短文,从短文后A至F六个选项中选出五个可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
Every day, we see advertisements on smartphone apps, living room TVs and large screens of the shopping malls. They are almost everywhere in our lives. 41 But how did people in the old days advertise their goods without modern media?
The purpose of advertising, after all, is to attract customers’ attention. 42 In the poem Heavenly Questions, a man selling meat in a market knocked his knife on the table to make a sound. This simple sound helped him draw customers.
Another simple way to advertise was to shout about the quality of one’s goods. In the Song Dynasty, sellers used clever rhymes to market their goods. 43 This made their advertisements fun and easy to remember.
44 Strategies of the Warring States mentions the story of a horse seller. At first, he shouted to the crowd about the good quality of his horses, but no one was interested. Later, the man came up with a good idea. He asked Bo Le, a well-known horse expert, to come to his stall. Bo Le came and acted very interested in the horses. 45
It’s clear that even without technology, people knew how to advertise wisely. The ways may have changed, but the essence of capturing attention remains the same.
A.Soon, many people came over to ask about the price.
B.In fact, this was also true long before the digital times.
C.In addition, some sellers asked famous people for help.
D.They even created songs and music, turning it into an art.
E.In ancient times, people put up some notices to achieve it.

D.He feels safe from his grandfather and brother there.
31.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The way the writer washes dishes.
B.The benefits of washing dishes by hand.
C.The writer’s thoughts while washing dishes.

32.What part of washing dishes does the writer like?

Household Robots
Household robots are now widely used in our daily lives. They look modern and fashionable.
Household robots have many functions. Firstly, they can be used to cook and clean the rooms. Secondly, they can help to take care of the elderly. Moreover, they can even make calls to deal with something dangerous.
However, there are still some problems. Sometimes, they may catch a virus and cause safety problems.
In my opinion, robots should be used to improve people’s lives. Scientists should make robots help us live better.
