In much of Asia, especially the so-called “rice bowl” cultures of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, usually food is eaten with chopsticks.
Chopsticks are usually two long, thin pieces of wood or bamboo in the same shape, size and material. 6 Sometimes chopsticks are quite artistic. Truly elegant chopsticks might be made of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also join hard woods and metal to create special designs.
As an old saying goes, “A chopstick can be broken easily, ten pairs of chopsticks hold each other tightly.” 7 However, ten pairs of chopsticks can produce strength. All the Chinese people consider them as the symbol of unity (团结) and power.
8 People probably cooked their food in large pots, using twigs to remove it. Over time, as the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces. 9 Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs which gradually turned into chopsticks.
Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius (孔子) who lived from 551 to 479 BCE, influenced the development of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and were too violent for use at the table.

Rich men in England have been fond of wearing bowler hats since Victorian times. In the 20th century, the bowler hat was famously worn by the British actor and comedian, Charlie Chaplin.
13 The working class wore flat caps because they were light, didn’t get in the way and stayed on their head while people were doing physical work. By the 19th century, 14 Oliver, the poor little boy in Charles Dickens’ famous novel, often wore a flat cap.

Greeting people is always polite. But it’s more important in some cultures than in others. In France, when you come into a store, you should always greet the people working there. 17 The same goes for coffee shops and restaurants. If you don’t do that, people will think you are not polite at all.
Some of the biggest cultural differences have to do with table manners. 18 That means eating without making any noise. But in parts of Asia, making a sound while eating shows that you are enjoying your meal.
19 For example, in North America and Europe, people use forks to bring food to their mouths. But in Thailand, people only use a fork to push food onto a spoon.

Passage 1
Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?
Lots of people do. 26 They found that one half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people find they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their homes. 27 “In Japan, they say, ‘If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers.
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. 28 They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
29 Researchers still don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night. They also do not know why brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. 30 The brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder for people to get the sleep they need in order to wake up feeling well-rested in the morning.
A.They call it “first-night influence”.
B.Sasaki said a lot of questions still remain.
C.And now researchers from Brown University think they know why.

Passage 2
There are not many nations that can say their national dish has become international.
31 Both are famous all over the world, and both have made the history of Italian food. People have been eating pizza, in one form or another, for centuries. They eat it everywhere—at home, in restaurants, or on street comers.
32 Long ago, pieces of flatbread, topped with mushrooms and herbs (香料), were a simple and tasty meal. They were mostly for those who didn’t have enough money to buy plates, or who were on the go. In the 18th century, Naples, in southern Italy, had become one of the largest cities in Europe, and it was growing fast. Lots of city people were poor and they were always rushing around to look for work. 33 Pizzas were cut to meet the customers’ needs. They were inexpensive, used easy-to-find ingredients (原料), and could be made with plenty of flavor.
It was in America that pizza found its second home. 34 Soon, pizza spread across the country with the rapid development of the city. It was increasingly considered as a fast, fun food. People might like New York-style thin pizza, or Chicago deep-dish thick pizza. Some want extra cheese on their pizzas while others only like vegetables. 35

Passage 3
As winter comes, hands and feet can easily get cold, especially among women. 36 But when people want to do something with their hands, wearing them is not convenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people. They had a better tool to keep their hands warm: hand warmers.
37 One folk story is connected with Emperor Yangdi from the Sui Dynasty. He visited Jiangsu in the winter. Because of the cold, the local officer asked workmen to make a small warmer for the emperor (皇帝) that could be held in his hands. 38 By the Song Dynasty, the tool was popular among common people. The skills for making the tool were used in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Energy—a powerful word. What is energy, anyway? In scientific terms, energy is the ability to do work. There are many different kinds of energy. But energy can change from one form to another.
You have energy too. 41 Because of your energy, you can walk, run, jump, skip, sing, do math problems, think, and do everything else. You get your energy from the food you eat and from sleeping.

And it’s very tactile (有触感的). We feel that at a time like this, tactility is really important to touch other people and get them into our homes,” Pantone colour specialist Leatrice Eiseman told CNN in a video call.
The colour of Peach Fuzz was chosen, according to Time magazine, because it shows the past yet has been updated with a modern atmosphere. 49

Passage 1
Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep per night. However, changes to the body’s sleep cycle make it difficult for teens to fall asleep early. Many cannot fall asleep until 10:30 p. m. or even later and most of them will feel sleepy if they have to get up too early.
Scientists recommend that both middle and high schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a. m. 51 Here are some other advantages of later school start times:
52
When running late in the mornings, students are likely to go without breakfast. With an empty stomach, one finds it difficult to focus (集中) in class. When they are always in a hurry, students may form unhealthy eating habits.
With extra time before going to school, students can eat a well-balanced breakfast and focus more on learning.
Fewer behavioral problems
Teens experience mood changes as a common result of this special period of life. 53 When they get enough sleep, students are calm and peaceful and their moods do not change suddenly. They’re less likely to feel worried, unhappy or get angry. For parents, children with more sleep are easier to live with.
Better performance (表现) in study
Sleep loss hurts attention, memory and brain development. Students with less sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and are likely to have lower grades. 54 They are also less likely to fall asleep in class and more able to understand what they learn.
55 It improves their chances of eating, behaving and performing better.
A.More time to sleep.
B.More time for a healthy breakfast.
C.Less sleep may cause worries, stress and unhappiness.

Passage 2
Have you ever had problems in your life and don’t know how to be happy? If so, you will find Being a Happy Teenager by an Australian writer Andrew Matthews useful. In his book, 56
The book says we should stop being angry. 57 For example, if you want to make your memory better, you can put what you’ve learned into pictures of your mind. Many teenagers think that happiness comes from good grades or praise from other people. 58
Success comes from a good attitude (态度). 59 Some schoolboys have problems such as being too tall or too short, but Matthews tells us happiness comes from thinking about things in a positive way.
If you are tall, you can get a better view (视线) at the movie. 60 This is Matthews’ most important lesson: “You choose to be happy!”
A.The book also tells us about some useful skills.

A part-time job is an option for teenagers who don’t have pocket money or who want to earn extra (额外的) money. 62 Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering newspapers, shop work and restaurant work.
Some students in Britain can work at most two hours a day on a school day but not during school hours. 63

Moreover, the post-2000s generation has a strong sense of social responsibility (责任). 73 They also try to be responsible by studying hard and behaving online.
In the UK, many of the post-2000s generation have given up the drinking habits that the past generations had, The Telegraph noted. Most of them now have healthier hobbies, such as knitting and cooking. “It’s hard to find time for a hobby if you are going out drinking,” Kate Payne, author of The Hip Girl’s Guide to Homemaking, told The Telegraph. 74 The 2023 Youth Justice Statistics Report in the UK showed that young people are less rude and noisy in public.

The second group stands behind him. Before he falls on the floor, they should catch him and not let him get hurt. Most of us felt bad with this. We were afraid that they wouldn’t catch us and we would fall on the floor. 77 We just stood there and laughed.
Finally, one student, a thin, quiet, dark-haired girl called Sarah, decided to move. She put her arms in front of her body, closed her eyes, and slowly fell backwards. 78
For a moment, I was sure she was going to fall on the floor. 79
We were all surprised, and were also encouraged. The girl was happy, too. Seeing this, Morrie felt happy and said to the girl, “When you close your eyes, you can’t see anything. You won’t feel safe. When you are falling, you may feel worried.

First, I asked the students to look for their favorite place in the school. 81 Then I had each of them describe their experiences of nature in a small garden.
In a box of about one and a half by two feet, they were free to organize—soil, stones, leaves and grass. Even as an active garden designer, I was impressed with their imagination. 82
One child created “water” that flowed into a “lake”; another child put grass in a way to represent “wind”; and yet another child tried hard to create shade... 83 That was why they took great interest when they created their small gardens. They spent a wonderful time together with nature.

112 Some of the main characteristics of a close relationship are common interests, openness and common life challenges. During college or high school years, most of the people in a group will have the same problem, so they can talk about their common problems, think together of solutions and even help each other go through them. 113
However, after graduation each person usually takes a different path and finds himself fighting his own unique battle. Problems become no longer common between the same group of people because each of them develops his own special ones. Friends can become less connected to each other when each one of them lives a different life. 114 In such a case two things can be done. You can either share your new problems with your old friends and make sure you listen to theirs or you can make more friends at your new job to share with them what’s going on in your new stage of life. 115 When you do so, stick to them, share your problems with them and you will never feel lonely.
A.What happens to the same group after graduation?
B.Loneliness can never appear in such an environment.
C.This gradually reduces closeness and promotes loneliness.
D.In fact, a person with quiet a few friends can still feel lonely.
E.Loneliness happens when you don’t have close relationships.
F.The key is to find people who are fighting the same battle as you.
Passage 4
There are some skills for students to listen to the teacher in class, which means you’re going to have to practice it. Just as you would have to practice playing basketball to be a better player, you also have to practice listening. How to listen in school? 116
One of the things you need to do is to make sure that your mind doesn’t wander (漫游). It’s easy to start thinking about other things, especially when you’re not interested in the subject. 117
Next, listen for the main ideas. If you want to catch every little piece of information, you’ll feel tired and bored. 118 Not only does this show respect to the teacher, it also helps prevent your mind from wandering. What can distract (分散) you from listening? 119 Or it could be some birds outside the classroom window, or a group of kids who are talking loudly as they pass the door to your room.
Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You’ll have to take down the notes so that you can study it after class. 120
Listening isn’t always easy, but if you follow these simple steps, you’ll be much more successful in your classes.
A.You’ll also need to look at the teacher.
B.Here are some suggestions.
C.You don’t need to take too many notes in class.
D.It might be a friend who is trying to pass you a note.
E.Taking notes also makes you pay attention to the class.

Passage 5
Everyone wants to be happy. You see people who are smiling and laughing, and you want to be like them. 121 However, there are also bad days. Here are three ways to make you happier every day.
Smile often. Research has shown that the facial expression you wear influences your state of mind. 122 . Wearing a pleasant expression for a long period of time will slowly improve your feelings and help you have a happier day.
123 . The more you complain, the more annoyed you become. If all you notice or talk about during the day are the things that annoy you, it is no surprise that you are unhappy. To truly increase your long-term happiness, don’t complain any longer. 124
Practice thankfulness. Thankfulness has been shown to be the last ticket to a happy life. The more you practice thankfulness, the more you will find things to be grateful for in your life. 125 Even something as simple as a safe place to sleep or food to eat is worth being thankful for because not everyone is fortunate enough to have those necessities.
A.Try your best to be healthy.
B.Have an entire day without complaining even once and see how you feel.
C.Stop complaining.
D.There are good days filled with sunshine and smiles.
E.If you try to smile, you are more likely to be happy.
F.This then leads you to realize how much goodness is in your life.

Truly elegant chopsticks might be made of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also join hard woods and metal to create special designs.

48 As Time magazine noted, when people hear the name of the colour, they always think of how soft peaches feel to touch, the softness of bird feathers, and the feeling of silk. “It’s a warm and cozy shade.
“We think of peach as being a nostalgic (怀旧的) colour,” said Eiseman. “More often a woman’s colour. 50 I think that speaks to the modernity of the shade.”
Peach Fuzz is Pantone’s 25th colour of the Year. The first was created in 1999 to get the design community and colour lovers around the world in a conversation around colour.

话题3 教育与青少年问题

In a box of about one and a half by two feet, they were free to organize—soil, stones, leaves and grass. Even as an active garden designer, I was impressed with their imagination. 82

Passage 3

Many people mistakenly think that loneliness can be ended by having more friends or by meeting new people. 111 So what causes loneliness and why do so many people experience it right after graduation?
