For years, I went to school by bus, so I met many “familiar” strangers. We took the same bus but didn’t know each other’s names. I used to think it was impossible for us to be true friends. How wrong I was! Smiles from the “nameless” people have changed my thoughts.
The first time on the bus, I saw different faces. We met, greeted, and cold faces turned into smiling faces. As days went on, we chatted like old friends.
But I felt it a pity that I was unable to set up the same friendship with a silent girl in front of the bus. Her old clothing suggested (暗示) that she didn’t have much money, but she always took a glass of water for the driver. But why did she sit in silence instead of talking with us? Why did she never reply to our friendly greetings? Couldn’t she smile?
Then, one evening, I got the answer. I walked to the park nearby and found the girl sitting alone under a tree, lonely and sad. I greeted her with the same warm smile that I had shown to her all these months, but this time her face turned red with a shy smile. As soon as she began her first words, I understood why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
I learned her story. Her parents worked hard somewhere. She lived with her disabled grandparents. She said, “I can’t express myself very well. Most of the time, I can’t say what I want to say. I have no friends, but you always smile at me like an angel, so I also want to smile.”
That evening, we exchanged our names, and we said goodbye like old friends. A smile is the key to opening the door of the heart; it can break the cold walls in front of us.

7. What is the main idea of the passage?

A strange way to get relaxed has become popular in cities across China. That is hugging trees. Young people feel comfortable after tree-hugging.
Hundreds of people online share their tree-hugging experiences. They think they feel less stressed (有压力的) and worried after staying with trees for just 5 to 10 minutes. It is also a way of keeping a close relationship with the natural world, especially for those who live in busy cities. By hugging a tree, some of them feel the tree is hugging them back, as if nature is offering silent, warm support.
Jenny gave up her job because of too much work stress that made her unable to sleep well. According to her, hugging trees helps her a lot. I feel so free and feel the world is so big, not just full of endless work tasks.”
In fact, hugging trees is a kind of psychological therapy (心理治疗). It first came from northern Europe. In northern Finland, there’s even a tree-hugging competition every August, where people hug old trees to win prizes. A study shows that hugging can lead people to give off hormone (激素). You must have read or heard of the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, which is from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions written by Cao Xueqin. But can you imagine two people singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Recently, the novel has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan. It is welcomed by audiences (观众) at home and abroad.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters (章) and hundreds of characters. But the opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin instead of the rise and fall of the Jia family and tried to write a heart-breaking tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director, Timmy Yip, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her.
It isn’t the first time that they have made an opera adapted (改编) from Chinese literature. The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences, spreading Chinese culture to the world. They are happy to have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where their parents were born.
12. What do we know about A Dream of Red Mansions?
A. It is long and there are many different characters.
B. It was written by David Henry Hwang.
C. It is a classic Chinese opera known all over the world.
D. It tells a love story between Jia and Lin with a happy ending.
13. In which sentence does the word “land” have the same meaning as the underlined one?
A. The land was dry and hard after the long and hot summer.
B. It isn’t clear whether the plane went down over land or sea.
C. As a plane fan, he often goes to see planes land and take off.
D. Those heroes help people in danger and protect their land in time.
14. What do the creators of the opera think of their job according to the passage?
A. Tiring and boring. B. Satisfying and meaningful.
C. Difficult and unbelievable. D. Exciting and surprising.
15. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Rise and Fall of the Jia Family
B The Opera of A Dream of Red Mansions

A ②④①③ B. ②①④③ C. ④②③① D. ①④②③
6. What can we know from the passage?

C. The writer knew the name of the girl that evening.
D. The writer can’t make friends with those nameless people on the bus now.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. We should help those silent people.
B. Smiles can deal with every difficulty we meet.
C. We should smile to the nameless people on the bus.
D. Smiles can help us get closer and understand each other better.
C
She enjoys herself in hugging trees every weekend in the park. “Hugging trees helps me relax and lets me go back to a natural state.
