I was born in a small town in Pakistan called Quetta in 1980. When I was a little boy of about ten years old. I developed an interest in calligraphy. Back then we only had a TV channel with limited programs, One of the programs was about learning calligraphy. I was engaged and spent several years learning different calligraphy scripts (笔迹) in the Urdu language.
After graduation I came to Dubai, UAE. Falling in love with the architecture and high-rise buildings, I wanted to shoot the amazing beauty form different angles. So I bought a camera and learned photography, joined photography groups and attended workshops. After few years, I got bored of photographing landscapes and cityscapes.
Seven years ago, while going through the photography blogs and looking through others’ works. I read the term called “light painting”. a photography technique that allows you to draw in space. I started experimenting with that and soon it hit me: why not bring back my passion for calligraphy using light painting technique? Since that day. I’ve been drawing light calligraphy. To achieve the best results. I decided to build the lights myself. The best part about my work is that they are not photoshopped. I prefer to get the results straight out of the camera. I don’t even turn over the images. To achieve that, I have to write in reverse (倒置) and that took a lot of practice to get it right.
Currently, I’m working on the idea of bringing abandoned places back to life, including buildings which have lost their charm and are hidden in darkness. Through my photography, I try to employ light calligraphy by writing a word that attaches a deep meaning to those places and telling stories behind them. In this way, I hope people will revisit these places and appreciate the real reason for their construction.
4. What can be implied from the author’s experience in Quetta?
A. He had access to plenty art resources.
B. He was fond of calligraphy channels.
C. He grasped scripts of many languages.
D. He was willing to dig into calligraphy.
5. What made the author interested in taking pictures in Dubai?
A. Visual impacts of structures. B. Remarkable urban planning.
C. Mysterious building stories. D. Odd angles of architecture.
6. How did the author enhance the effects of light calligraphy?
A. By learning from others. B. By sticking to originality.
C. By beautifying his photos. D. By drawing in open space.
7. What is the author’s role in practising his current idea?
A. A writer putting down real thoughts. B. An educator spreading sound values.
C. An artist regenerating forgotten sites. D. A historian looking for ignored areas.
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

Imagine you’re writing a poem, rhymes must be paired up before you start a new line. It turns out that AI does something similar! When Claude, a large language model (LLM), is given the first line “he saw a carrot and had to grab it”, it begins thinking about words like “rabbit” almost immediately, writing the next sentence to end at the appropriate rhyme.
Such forethought is unexpected. Scientists at Anthropic, the lab that developed Claude, built a tool and they discovered some unexpected complexity.
The tool, a “digital microscope”, lets scientists look at which parts of the AI’s neural (神经的) network light up when it’s working on different tasks. If a particular area of the LLM lights up whenever it produces words like rabbit, then that gets marked as being related to rabbits.
This has let the team solve some open questions in AI research, for example, whether a multilingual (多语言的) chatbot has awareness of concepts beyond language. When Claude is asked for the opposite of “big” in English, or the same concept in Chinese, the same feature lights up in every case, before more language-specific circuits kick in to “translate” the concept of smallness into a particular word. This suggests that AI might have a deeper understanding of the world than we thought.
Other insights, though, are less encouraging. When Claude itself is asked to reason, printing out its chain of thought to answer maths questions, the microscope suggests that the way the model says it reached a conclusion, and what it actually thought, might not always be the same. Worse still, ask a leading question — suggesting that the answer “might be 4”, and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it to agree with the question, even if the suggestion is wrong.
But being able to gain insight into the mind of an LLM provides clues as to how to stop it doing the same in the future. The goal, after all, is not to have to do brain surgery, but to know what it’s thinking.
8. What does the writer intend to show through the example in paragraph 1?
A. AI can write texts as programmed. B. AI can plan sentences in advance.
C. AI can deal with complex tasks. D. AI can simplify rhyming lines.
9. How does “digital microscope” function in the research?
A. By tracking AI’s thinking activities. B. By working on different jobs.
C. By activating AI’s “brain” potential. D. By matching language patterns.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 5 about Claude?
A. It may make stuff up. B. It may skip chains of thought.
C. It may leave clues out. D. It may give logical reasoning.
11. Which of the following titles best suits this text?
A. Why AI Still Gets It Wrong B. Chatbots’ Language Magic
C. Looking Inside AI’s Mind D. The Rise of AI Chatbots
B 9. A 10. A 11. C

根据第一段中的“Imagine you’re writing a poem, rhymes must be paired up before you start a new line. It turns out that AI does something similar! When Claude, a large language model (LLM), is given the first line “he saw a carrot and had to grab it”, it begins thinking about words like “rabbit” almost immediately, writing the next sentence to end at the appropriate rhyme.(想象一下你正在写诗,在开始新的一行之前,必须先搭配好押韵词。事实证明,人工智能也会做类似的事情!当大型语言模型(LLM)克劳德(Claude)得到第一行文字“he saw a carrot and had to grab it”(他看到一根胡萝卜,不得不抓住它)时,它几乎立刻就开始思考像“rabbit”(兔子)这样的词,并写出下一个句子,使其结尾有合适的押韵词。)”可知,作者以AI写诗提前思考押韵词为例,是为了说明AI能提前规划句子。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The tool, a “digital microscope”, lets scientists look at which parts of the AI’s neural (神经的) network light up when it’s working on different tasks. If a particular area of the LLM lights up whenever it produces words like rabbit, then that gets marked as being related to rabbits.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。如果大型语言模型(LLM)的某个特定区域在生成“rabbit”(兔子)这类词时总会被激活,那么该区域就会被标记为与“兔子”相关。)”可知,“数字显微镜”通过追踪AI的思维活动(神经网络激活情况)发挥作用。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“When Claude itself is asked to reason, printing out its chain of thought to answer maths questions, the microscope suggests that the way the model says it reached a conclusion, and what it actually thought, might not always be the same. Worse still, ask a leading question — suggesting that the answer “might be 4”, and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it to agree with the question, even if the suggestion is wrong.(当要求克劳德(Claude)进行推理,输出其思考过程来解答数学问题时,“数字显微镜”显示,该模型声称得出结论的方式与其实际思考过程可能并不总是一致的。更糟糕的是,若提出一个诱导性问题——暗示答案“可能是4”,即便这个暗示是错误的,它也会特意添加数字,最终得出与该问题暗示一致的结论。)”可知,Claude可能会编造思考过程或结果来迎合错误暗示,即“可能会编造内容”。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第三段中“The tool, a “digital microscope”, lets scientists look at which parts of the AI’s neural (神经的) network light up when it’s working on different tasks.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。)”以及最后一段中的“But being able to gain insight into the mind of an LLM provides clues as to how to stop it doing the same in the future.(但能够深入了解大型语言模型(LLM)的“思维”,为未来找到阻止它出现类似问题的方法提供了线索。)”
D
The centuries-old practice of spreading crushed limestone (石灰石) on farmland can improve crop yields (产量) by making soil less acidic. This custom is typically considered a source of greenhouse gas emissions, but new findings suggest “liming” may actually help remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.
“Liming can be a carbon source or sink. Practical tests suggest this is a pretty efficient carbon sink,” says Noah Planavsky at Yale University. This could offer new motivation to spread more limestone on the world’s farms — but liming won’t have this effect everywhere.
Currently, most crushed limestone spread on fields is counted as an emission source because its carbon is released as CO2 when it dissolves (溶解) in acidic soil. However, Tim Jesper Suhrhoff, also at Yale, argues this accounting is incomplete. Soils are very acidic due to fertiliser use and fossil-fuel pollution, and other alkaline (碱性的) minerals in soil will release carbon even without limestone. He says added acidity, not liming, is to blame for emissions.
To accurately assess liming’s emissions, researchers should compare CO2 release and uptake with and without liming. Suhrhoff, Planavsky and colleagues studied the Mississippi river basin, calculating the net carbon effect of liming between 1900 and 2015. They used geochemical models and data on soil-acidity changes from fertiliser and liming, and compared results with Mississippi alkalinity measurements. Their new approach showed liming in this region removed about 300 to 400 million tonnes of CO2 instead of generating emissions.
Planavsky says liming could be paired with spreading crushed volcanic rocks on farms to remove more CO2. Wolfram Buss at the Australian National University warns that what worked in the Mississippi may not work everywhere, as liming can be a net CO2 source in some systems.
The next step is to identify regions needing liming most. Planavsky says, “It could promote practices aiding crop yields and removing billions of tonnes of CO2, helping low-income farmers who can’t afford optimal liming.”
12. What does the underlined word “sink” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. A place to wash hands. B. A tool for farming.
C. A thing to absorb substances. D. A type of geological rock.
13. According to Tim Jesper Suhrhoff, what is the real cause of CO2 emissions in soil?
A. Natural alkaline substances.
B. Crushed limestone dissolving.
C. Fossil-fuel pollution and fertilizer use.
D. Crushed volcanic rock spreading.
14. What is the next step for liming research?
A. Stopping liming in acidic soil. B. Finding areas most in need of liming.
C. Reducing costs for all farmers. D. Expanding volcanic rock use globally.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Liming has been increasing greenhouse gases.
B. Reducing soil acidity benefits crop production.
C. Global agriculture should universally adopt liming.
D. New studies indicate liming’s potential CO2 absorption
C 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据第二段“Liming can be a carbon source or sink. Practical tests suggest this is a pretty efficient carbon sink (撒石灰既可以是碳源,也可以是碳sink。实际测试表明,它是一种效率很高的碳sink。)”及第四段“Their new approach showed liming in this region removed about 300 to 400 million tonnes of CO2 instead of generating emissions.(他们的新方法显示,该地区的撒石灰操作移除了约3亿到4亿吨二氧化碳。)”
根据第三段“Soils are very acidic due to fertiliser use and fossil-fuel pollution, and other alkaline (碱性的) minerals in soil will release carbon even without limestone. He says added acidity, not liming, is to blame for emissions.(由于化肥使用和化石燃料污染,土壤酸性很强,即使没有石灰石,土壤中的其他碱性矿物质也会释放碳。他表示,排放的罪魁祸首是额外的酸性,而非撒石灰。)”可知,Tim Jesper Suhrhoff 认为土壤中二氧化碳排放的真正原因是化肥使用和化石燃料污染(导致土壤酸性增强)。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The next step is to identify regions needing liming most. (下一步是确定最需要撒石灰的地区。)”可知,撒石灰研究的下一步是找到最需要撒石灰的区域。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第一段“This custom is typically considered a source of greenhouse gas emissions, but new findings suggest “liming” may actually help remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.(这种习惯通常被认为是温室气体排放的一个来源,但新的发现表明,“撒石灰”实际上可能有助于从大气中去除大量的二氧化碳。)”
I vividly remember the process of moving in for the first time: stuffing clothes, comfort items, and pieces of my childhood into various bags and boxes. It was a whirlwind (旋风) of excitement.____16____ What would it be like living at college? Would I get along with my roommate? How would I make friends with complete strangers?
____17____ I had always felt like I struggled more than others to find “my people”. In high school, I had a few close friends, but it always seemed like everyone else had these big, inseparable friend groups that did everything together. I wanted that, and the sense of belonging, too.
Like many, I was attracted by the first people I met in college. ____18____We lived next to each other, ate together and stayed late together. They were my early friend group, and they brought laughter, growth, and memories — both positive and negative. Those highs and lows taught me an important lesson: Not every friendship is meant to last, and that’s okay.
Your friendships don’t just impact your social life — they affect your motivation, your academics, and, among other things, your sense of self. I have found it valuable to surround myself with people who share my values to keep me grounded. ____19____ College is one of the few places in life where you’re surrounded by people from vastly different backgrounds and experiences. Keeping an open mind is just as important as finding common ground.
College can be, and probably will be, chaotic. People come and go. You’ll probably cry over friendships that didn’t work out. ____20____ That’s all part of the process. Over time, you will find your people.
A. They’re part of your story.
B. But it was also filled with uncertainty.
C. I wouldn’t trade my friendship for anything.
D. They mostly so happened to be the people on my floor.
E. You may smile at memories with people no longer close with.
F. Of all the unknowns, the last question consumed me the most.
G. Nevertheless, don’t limit yourself to just those who are like you.
B 17. F 18. D 19. G 20. E

Last weekend, I was standing at the finish line of the St. Francis Franny Flyer 5K (5公里赛) route, waiting for my nine-year-old son Kade to pass by.
Kade, though a fourth-grader, was already an experienced runner. He had been a part of a cross-country club since he was six years old. He had loved to run for as long as he could remember. He had been working hard to improve his endurance and running skills as he was determined to be a professional runner and compete in national and international races when he was older.
There were two St. Francis Franny Flyer races happening at the same time that day. The 5K race weaved through neighborhoods, from the church to Pinecone Road and back while the 10K followed the same route but extended north on Pinecone Road. Race volunteers were available on Pinecone Road to show runners the way, and there were also signs directing the two different courses.
I signed Kade up for the 5K race as a way to train him for the Junior Olympics. He had never run a 10K, not even in training, so the 10K race was never an option.
Kade was pretty fast and he set a 5K record for his age group at last year’s race, so I was surprised to see slower runners crossing the finish line before him. “This is weird. He should be ahead of them. He might just be having a bad race,” I thought to myself. But as the minutes passed, my worry intensified. My heart raced at the thought that Kade might be lost or injured.
Anxious and worried, I drove along the 5K race route in search of Kade, but he was nowhere to be found. A surge of fear and despair overwhelmed me, causing a flood of tears to pour down my face. I turned to race officials and volunteers for help, and people started looking for him

Later, a volunteer told me he had spotted Kade on the 10K course. Knowing that he was safe, I let out a sigh of relief. Despite hearing that Kade seemed to be running well, worry hang over me as I realized he had taken a wrong turn and was now running a longer and more challenging race than he had ever trained for I couldn’t help but pace back and forth at the finish line, anxiously searching for any sign of my son. With every runner approaching, my heart leaped in hope, only to sink in disappointment when it wasn’t him.
Finally, Kade appeared and crossed the finish line. Relief washed over me at the sight of his face. I hugged him tightly, overwhelmed with pride for his courage, determination, and resilience. “What happened? Why did you end up on the 10K course?” I asked my son eagerly. “A race volunteer directed me the wrong way. I didn’t realize the mistake until I saw the 10K turnaround sign, but I didn’t want to give up halfway,” explained Kade. At that moment, I knew without doubt that he was to become a professional runner.

After graduation, I came to Dubai, UAE.

6 How did the author enhance the effects of light calligraphy?

D
The centuries-old practice of spreading crushed limestone (石灰石) on farmland can improve crop yields (产量) by making soil less acidic. This custom is typically considered a source of greenhouse gas emissions but new findings suggest “liming” may actually help remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Another robot, Shanmao M20, has also proven its worth by withstanding the harsh plateau environment while ____41____ (carry) oxygen tanks during the mission.
Tibetan antelopes are extremely sensitive ____42____ human presence, which has long made traditional wildlife observation difficult. However, this robotic antelope can be remotely controlled from up to 2 kilometers away. It can quietly approach the herd, capturing valuable close-range data and high-definition images without disturbing the antelopes. This provides researchers with an unprecedented opportunity ____43____ (study) their behaviors, especially their ____44____ (mystery) migration patterns for giving birth.
Researchers from the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology are excited about the potential of this technology, ____45____ they believe will help solve long-standing mysteries surrounding Tibetan antelopes. Rangers in Hoh Xil also see great promise in using robots for risky tasks like patrolling dangerous areas and tracking poachers, which will greatly enhance the protection of this precious ecosystem.
