TAI PO, Hong Kong - A massive fire tore through a residential estate in Tai Po on the
afternoon of November 26, 2025, evolving into one of the deadliest blazes in the city's
recent history. The fire rapidly engulfed(吞噬) seven of the eight buildings at Wang Fu Court,
prompting authorities to raise the alarm to Level 5, its highest classification.
According to the latest announcement(通报)by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Fire Services Department on November 28, the tragedy has claimed 94 lives, including one firefighter who died in the line of duty.
Firefighters confronted immense challenges in battling the inferno. Flammable(易燃的)bamboo scaffolding and protective canvas, erected around the buildings for renovation work, acted as kindling and accelerated the fire's spread. High temperatures and partial scaffolding collapses(坍塌)further hampered (阻碍) rescue efforts. Despite these life-threatening hurdles, rescue crews worked tirelessly, with fire-fighting operations largely completed by the early hours of November 28 and search efforts for trapped individuals ongoing.
In response to the crisis, the community has mobilized (动员)swiftly. Temporary shelters(底护所) have been established to accommodate displaced residents, with volunteers and social workers providing essential supplies and psychological support. Donations(捐赠)have poured in from local and Chinese mainland enterprises to back relief efforts. Meanwhile, authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Pre-made food(预制菜)has recently sparked a heated public debate. The incident of Luo Yonghao criticizing XiBei, a renowned restaurant chain, on social media added fuel to the fire. Luo claimed most dishes at XiBei were pre-made but sold at high prices without clear disclosure(公示). XiBei denied the accusation, opened its kitchens to the public, and even provocatively rolled out a "Luo Yonghao Menu" in response.
As major domestic official media have pointed out, pre-made food, as a product of industrial food production, has its irreplaceable advantages. It meets the demand for fast meals in a fast-paced society, helps catering businesses cut costs, labor, and improve efficiency, and helps to reduce food waste through standardization(标准化).
However, problems cannot be ignored. First, food safety is a top concern. Long-term storage and complex supply chains(供应链)may pose risks like microbial contamination(微生物污染)without proper oversight(监管).
Second, the lack of transparency(透明度)violates consumers' right to know—many restaurants use pre-made food without informing customers, who pay for what they believe are freshly cooked dishes. Third, some products raise quality concerns, such as the overuse of additives(添加剂)to extend shelf life(保质期).
To ensure the healthy development of the pre-made food industry, stricter supervision(监管)is urgently needed. Authorities should improve standards, strengthen inspections of production and logistics(物流),and require businesses to disclose the use of pre-made ingredients(预制食材). Only in this way can the industry's growth be balanced with the protection of consumers' legitimate rights(合法权益).
8. What can we infer from the incident mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. XiBei immediately admitted using pre-made food after Luo Yonghao’s criticism.
B. Luo Yonghao thought XiBei’s pre-made food was sold at an unreasonable price.
C. The "Luo Yonghao Menu" was well-received by most customers.
D. Social media paid no attention to Luo Yonghao’s comment on XiBei.
9 Which of the following is NOT an advantage of pre-made food according to the text?
A. It meets people’s need for fast meals in a fast-paced society.
B. It helps catering businesses cut down on costs and labor.
C. It reduces food waste through standardized production.
D. It avoids the use of any additives to keep food fresh.
10. The underlined word "oversight" in Paragraph 3 probably means _____.
A. careful supervision
B. sudden change
C. public support
D. quick development
11. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain why pre-made food is popular among consumers.
B. To list the problems of the pre-made food industry.
C. To put forward suggestions for the healthy development of the pre-made food industry.
D. To compare the advantages and disadvantages of pre-made food.

If you’ve been encouraged by David Attenborough’s The Green Planet, why not have a go at some indoor gardening? You’ll see with your own eyes the beauty and living skills of plants, right there in your own home. One in eight UK homes do not have a garden of their own, which makes it impossible to enjoy gardening outdoors. Even if your home does have a garden, you may find it easier or more fun to start your gardening discovery indoors.
Growing cress is perfect to start. Throw cress seeds on some wet kitchen paper placed in a dish. Put it on a windowsill and keep the paper wet, and your seeds will germinate in 24 to 48 hours. A week later, your cress will be ready to be put in an egg sandwich.
Herbs are a great choice to try indoor gardening, especially since they can be used in cooking. Basil and chives are easy to grow from seeds, each taking about a week to germinate. Parsley takes longer, but it will happily live indoors in pots as long as you keep it being watered. Your family will enjoy eating meals knowing that you have grown the herbs that have been used to make them so delicious.
If you prefer to go straight to fully-grown houseplants, there are some that are ideal for beginners. Look for the spider plant, the snake plant and the peace lily. They don’t need much care but they look impressive. Succulents and cacti are also good choices—just be careful of the spikes.
Studies have shown that keeping houseplants is good for your mental health. The Week Junior reader Ben explains, “I like the structure that plants give to your days. Even if you’re having a bad day, it is nice to see something that you’ve grown—it gets you up and going, and caring for them takes your mind off things.
12. In Paragraph l, the writer advises us ________.
A. to enjoy indoor gardening B. to watch The Green Planet
C. to have a garden of our own D. to enjoy gardening outdoors
13. Why is growing cress perfect to start?
A. Because it tastes delicious. B. Because it sells very well.
C. Because it is very expensive. D. Because it grows very quickly.
14. How many kinds of herbs are talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It’s not difficult to grow plants indoors.
B. We feel kind of tired if we grow plants indoors.
C. Keeping houseplants is good for our mental health.

A group of swans flew down to a beach. There was a crow (乌鸦) jumping around. The crow watched them and looked down on them.
“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s not for you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”
One of the swans took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, did other flying tricks, and then came down and looked at the swan proudly.
Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (评论) about his flying. “No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of pride (骄傲)! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life…”

Last year, I joined a kite painting activity to experience traditional Chinese art. The most impressive part was designing patterns with red and gold paint. I drew a phoenix on the kite, and the teacher taught me how to mix colors to make it vivid.
I love kite painting because it combines creativity with cultural meaning. Every pattern, like dragons or peonies, carries good wishes. Now, more young people are interested in this art—many workshops offer experience courses, and some students even share their works online.
I hope kite painting will keep developing. Maybe we can add modern elements to it while preserving traditions, so it can be passed down to more generations and known by people around the world.
