My parents ran the Pagonis restaurant, a small eatery in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and my first real job, when I was six years old, was shining diners’ shoes. My duties increased as I grew older. By the age of ten I was clearing tables and working as the janitor(清洁工). Dad beamed when he told me that I was the best “mop guy” he’d ever had.
Working in the restaurant was a source of great pride because I was pitching in for the good of the whole family. But my father made it clear. I had to meet certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be responsible, hard-working and polite to the customers.
Except for the shoeshine job, I was never paid for any work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of telling Dad I thought he ‘should give me $10 a week. He said, “Okay, then how about you paying me for the three meals a day you eat here? And for the times you bring in your buddies for free sodas?” He figured I owed him about $40 a week. This taught me that when you negotiate, you’d better know the other side’s arguments as well as your own.
I remember coming home to Charleroi after being away in the Army about two years. I had just been promoted to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents’ restaurant. The first thing Dad said was, “It’s the janitor’s day off. How about you cleaning up tonight?”“I can’t believe this!” I thought. “I’m an officer in the United States Army!” But it didn’t matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just another member of the team. I reached for the mop.
Working for Dad had taught me that loyalty to a team comes first. It doesn’t matter whether that team is involved in a family restaurant or in the Army.
4. How was the author’s work at the restaurant?
A. It was unpaid.
B. It was beyond his power.
C. It was negotiable.
D. It was thought highly of by his father.
5. What do the underlined words “pitching in” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Doing my bit.
B. Swallowing my pride.
C. Making a sacrifice.
D. Earning a living.
6. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A. He got annoyed at his father’s words.
B. He hadn’t expected to be treated as before.
C. His father didn’t realize he was an honored captain.
D. His father fully understood his son’s pride as an officer.
7. What qualities are required to be a good team member according to the text?
A. Responsibility and generosity.
B. Politeness and kindness.
C. Diligence and faithfulness.
D. Devotion and ambition.
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

根据第一段“By the age of ten I was clearing tables and working as the janitor(清洁工). Dad beamed when he told me that I was the best “mop guy” he’d ever had.( 十岁的时候,我就开始清理桌子和当清洁工了。爸爸笑着告诉我,我是他请过的最好的“清洁工”)”可知,父亲对作者的清洁工作评价很高,很赞赏。故选D项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前“Working in the restaurant was a source of great pride(在餐厅工作是一件非常自豪的事情)”可知,作者在自家小餐馆工作是有自豪感的,因为他为了整个家庭的利益,做出了自己的一份努力。所以划线词应该表示,出了自己的一份力。故选A项。
根据第四段“I remember coming home to Charleroi after being away in the Army about two years. I had just been promoted to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents’ restaurant. The first thing Dad said was, ‘It’s the janitor’s day off. How about you cleaning up tonight?’‘I can’t believe this!’ I thought. ‘I’m an officer in the United States Army!’
根据第二段末“I had to meet certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be responsible, hard-working and polite to the customers.(我必须达到一定的标准才能成为团队的一员。我必须负责,努力工作,对顾客有礼貌)”可知,根据文中父亲的标准,作为一个团队的成员,应该是勤奋的,责任心强。be hard-working与diligence意思一致,be responsible 和 faithfulness意义一致。故选C项。
C
This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. They rise ever higher; learning doesn’t.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades.
Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as the SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.
That’s true not just of low-achieving students. In a 2023 survey, educators said that close to half of students argue for higher grades than they earn, and 8 out of 10 teachers give in. It’s hard to blame them: A third or more of students and parents disturb them when they don’t.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march off to college to find themselves in remedial (补习的) classes because they haven’t learned enough to take college-level courses. Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic skills needed in the workforce. There are also complaints from college professors that the students aren’t even good at reading books.
Grade inflation has followed students into college. Some professors hesitate to grade accurately because of student evaluations, which are often more negative for tough graders. Remember that about 70% of college instructors are adjunct (兼职) professors who have few job protections. Many Ivy League students have learned to cherry-pick easy-grading professors. Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more. We have to ask ourselves as a society: Do we want college to be a place of intellectual growth — or a performative exercise in grade fishing?
8. What are parents fooled into thinking?
A. SAT is the best measure of their children's abilities.
B. The purpose of education is to make better citizens.
C. Grade-point averages are vital for college application.
D. Children’s high grades reflect their exceptional abilities.
9. What is a consequence of grade inflation?
A. Employers favor students with higher degrees.
B. Graduates fall short of employers’ expectations.
C. Remedial classes become required courses in college.
D. Low-achieving students find it harder to enter college.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Tough graders desire job security.
B. Strict grading promotes real learning.
C. Student evaluations fuel intellectual growth.
D. Easy-grading professors start grade inflation.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. The game of scores B. Today, Grade A is for average
C. The force behind grade inflation D. Now, learning takes the front seat
D 9. B 10. B 11. B
根据第三段“Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as the SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.(平均绩点一直在上升,尽管像学术能力评估测试(SAT)这样的全国标准化考试成绩并没有提高。
根据最后一段“Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more.(然而,布朗大学的一项研究发现,接受评分标准更严格的教授课程的学生学到的东西更多)”可知,布朗大学的一项研究发现,接受评分标准更严格的教授课程的学生学到的东西更多。
根据第一段“This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. 由此可知,文章最好的标题是B项“Today, Grade A is for average(如今,A 等级只是平均分)”。故选B项。
D
Just after hatching, many birds learn to identify and follow the first moving object they encounter — a process called imprinting (印记行为), which can offer protection in the wild as it helps them stay near a parent. It doesn’t take much visual information for a bird to learn to prefer one object and follow it. Researchers wanted to know whether AI models called transformers could do a similar task with limited inputs.
Transformers are generic (通用的) learning systems that can be trained to perform a wide variety of tasks, making them useful in both AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and in computer vision applications, such as autonomous car navigation.
“To directly compare learning algorithms (算法) to brains, we need to train them on the same experiences,” says Samantha Wood at Indiana University Bloomington. She first raised chicks in a box where the only visual stimulation came from a rotating 3D object presented on a screen. After the first week, she ran each chick through hundreds of test trials that showed that same object on one screen-presented from both familiar and unfamiliar perspectives and displayed a second unfamiliar object on another screen. The chicks spent more of their time near the first object, suggesting they had imprinted on it.
The researcher then created a virtual simulation (虚拟模拟) of the set-up and used a virtual agent to move through it while looking around and recording a first-person view. That provided tens of thousands of simulated images for training and evaluating four transformer models.
The AI models had just 300 milliseconds to learn from each simulated image approximating how long biological neurons fire after being presented with an image. The researcher found that the AIs could learn to recognise a 3D object as quickly and accurately as the chicks.
The study is “a great piece of work” in comparing machine performance with biological brains, says Antone Martinho-Truswell at the University of Sydney. But he also notes, “We might be able to say that the chick ‘saw’ its imprinting object, but that will have a component of experience to it. Particularly as imprinting is to do with identifying its mother, it would be unsurprising if that visual experience were combined with a suite of other components of experience: fear yielding to comfort, for example, as the chick comes to regard the object as its imprinted ‘mother’.”
12. Why do newborn birds engage in imprinting?
A. To enhance their navigation skills.
B. To develop their social behaviour.
C. To establish a protective bond with a guardian.
D. To improve their communication with others.
13. How did Samantha Wood conduct the initial experiment with chicks?
A. She raised them with a rotating visual element.
B. She observed their behaviour in a natural habitat.
C. She showed them various moving objects on screens.
D. She exposed them to various visual simulations in the wild.
14. What did the test trials indicate about the chicks’ behavior?
A. They were afraid of the imprinted object.
B. They preferred being near the imprinted object.
C. They confused the imprinted object with others.
D. They showed no preference for the imprinted object.
15. What’s challenging about comparing AI to biological brains?
A. The rapid learning pace of AI models.
B. Recreating real-world environments for experiments.
C. The complexity and diversity of biological experiences.
D. Conducting additional experiments with various animals
C 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第一段中“Just after hatching, many birds learn to identify and follow the first moving object they encounter — a process called imprinting (印记行为), which can offer protection in the wild as it helps them stay near a parent. (刚孵化出来,许多鸟类就学会识别并跟随它们遇到的第一个移动物体——这一过程被称为印记行为,这在野外可以为它们提供保护,因为这有助于它们留在父母身边)”可知,新生鸟类进行印记行为是为了与监护人建立保护性联系。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“She first raised chicks in a box where the only visual stimulation came from a rotating 3D object presented on a screen. (她首先在一个盒子里饲养雏鸟,盒子里的唯一视觉刺激来自屏幕上呈现的一个旋转的3D物体)”可知,Samantha Wood用一个旋转的视觉元素来饲养雏鸟。故选A。
根据第三段中“The chicks spent more of their time near the first object, suggesting they had imprinted on it. (雏鸟们大部分时间都待在第一个物体附近,这表明它们已经对它产生了印记)”可知,测试试验表明雏鸟更喜欢待在印记对象附近。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But he also notes, “We might be able to say that the chick ‘saw’ its imprinting object, but that will have a component of experience to it. Particularly as imprinting is to do with identifying its mother, it would be unsurprising if that visual experience were combined with a suite of other components of experience: fear yielding to comfort, for example, as the chick comes to regard the object as its imprinted ‘mother’.”
In today’s hyper-connected world, most of us are flooded by an ocean of messages and social media feeds, from the moment we wake up to the instant we close our eyes. It’s not just a matter of convenience or novelty anymore — fixation on screens has become our habit, a necessity, and even an addiction. ___16___ Constant engagement not only consumes our time, but also steal us something far more important: peace of mind.
Silence is as critical to mental health as vitamins are to physical well-being. People are particular about what foods they put in their bodies: whether organic, vegetarian, or fat-free. ___17___ The mental junk we absorb daily can be arguably harmful than the occasional cheeseburger or donut. The never-ending flood of sensory input taxes the brain’s limited attention resources, leaving little room for deep thinking, reflecting, or creativity.
___18___ Quiet time helps the brain relax, sort through what it has taken in, and regain lost mental energy. As American artist Leonard Koren suggests in his book Wabi-Sabi, silence can be’ “an emptiness full of possibilities,” a space where creativity and clarity emerge.
Adding moments of quiet to your daily routine doesn’t require dramatic changes. ___19___ Better yet, research shows that brief exposure to nature, like a walk in the woods, lowers stress levels, reduces blood pressure, and sharpens focus. These benefits occur because green spaces and natural soundscapes provide a much-needed break from today’s busy, stressful world.
Digital life crowds out silence, making simply sitting in silence almost unthinkable — yet the very moments of stillness are what our minds really need. They let us listen to our thoughts, reflect on our experiences, and connect with ourselves in a way that is impossible in the noise of modern life. ___20___
A. But rarely do we ask ourselves: at what cost?
B. So, shouldn’t we make laws requiring quiet time every day?
C. It can be as simple as pausing 30 seconds to watch clouds.
D. Next time you reach for your phone, resist the urge and sit in silence.
E. We check our phone 58 times a day, 30%occurring during work hours.
F. But they aren’t as picky about what they are exposed to through the senses.
G. Just as our bodies need nutrition, our minds require silence to function well.
A 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. D

故填which。
故填to source。
故填an。
故填as。
Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD),动词involve与下文的名词短语之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词involving作定语。
故填is expected。
The project’s impact on carbon emissions并列作主语,应该用名词形式provision。

Sienna Powell was a 16-year-old raised by a single mother. Her mum, Lisa, worked as a bank cashier, barely keeping things together. Knowing her mother’s financial struggles, Sienna rarely asked for anything extra and even took on part-time jobs to help with expenses. She set aside what little she could in a tin can hidden in her closet, saving for something she’d always dreamed of-an amazing prom (舞会) dress.
Every day after school, Sienna would pass by a shop with a beautiful red dress in the window. It was her dream dress. After saving up enough, she walked into the shop and inquired about the cost. The dress was $2, 000-made from luxurious Italian satin. Determined, Sienna pinned pictures of the dress on her bedroom wall as motivation, reminding herself of her goal.
She often shared her dream with her best friend, Aaron, who had been abandoned by his father as well. They bonded over their shared struggles and became inseparable. As prom approached, Sienna finally had enough money saved. She ordered the dress, had her measurements taken, and eagerly awaited the big night. On the day of the event, she picked up the dress and couldn’t hold back tears of joy when she saw herself in the mirror. “It’s everything I imagined, ” she thought.
Back home, Sienna carefully prepared, excited for the night ahead. But just before she was set to leave, she received a call from Aaron. His voice was trembling (颤抖) as he said, “Sienna, I’m sorry, but I can’t go. My mum was rushed to the hospital and needs surgery. ”

Aaron and his mother, Elsie, were moved by Sienna’s generosity.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sienna’s heart sank as she listened. She glanced at her dress one last time before deciding what mattered most. “Don’t worry, Aaron. I’ll be there,” she said, setting her dress aside without a second thought. Instead of attending prom, Sienna listed the dress for sale online, starting the bid at $2, 000. By morning, the bids had skyrocketed, and she sold it for $ 4, 200, giving all the money to Aaron to help cover his mum’s surgery.
Aaron and his mother, Elsie, were moved by Sienna’s generosity. Elsie’s surgery was successful, and she recovered fully. Unable to return to her job, Elsie decided to pursue her passion for baking. Her small bakery became so popular that it expanded into multiple locations. Though Aaron and Elsie moved away and lost touch with Sienna over the years, they never forgot her kindness and generosity. After great efforts, Aaron and Elsie reconnected with Sienna. Elsie gave Sienna a check for $ 50, 000 as a small gesture of thanks and treated her as a daughter. They kept in touch afterwards.

Just after hatching, many birds learn to identify and follow the first moving object they encounter — a process called imprinting (印记行为), which can offer protection in the wild as it helps them stay near a parent. It doesn’t take much visual information for a bird to learn to prefer one object and follow it. Researchers wanted to know whether AI models called transformers could do a similar task with limited inputs.
Transformers are generic (通用的) learning systems that can be trained to perform a wide variety of tasks, making them useful in both AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and in computer vision applications, such as autonomous car navigation.
“To directly compare learning algorithms (算法) to brains we need to train them on the same experiences,” says Samantha Wood at Indiana University Bloomington.
A She raised them with a rotating visual element.
