There are a number of ways to do this. If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?” If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me…?” or “Can I have…?” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have…?” is preferred. It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give…?” You can also use: “May/Can I borrow…?” “Could/Can you lend me…?” “May I have…?” “Could you hand/give me…?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite. 11.What can we ask if we know someone has something? A.A direct question. B.A no question. C.A yes question. D.A polite question. 32.What can Lucy say politely if she wants some coffee? A.Pass me some coffee. B.Is there any coffee? C.Give me some coffee. D.Take some coffee to me. 13.What didn’t people say when they wanted something politely in the past? A.Can I use your dictionary? B.Could you lend me your bike? C.May I try your computer now? D.Might I take your car today? 14.Which of the following is a correct polite expression according to the passage? A.Do you give me any milk, please? B.Please could you lend me your ruler? C.May I have some tea, please? D.Please could you hand me a knife? 15.What’s the main idea of the passage? A.How to express or ask politely. B.What to do when we are polite. C.How to describe our ideas. D.What to do with our language problems. How would we travel 16 maps? It would be a bit adventurous (冒险的) to set off from Oxford University to go to London Bridge if there wasn't a 17 of the London Underground at each station. In fact, a lot of the early mapmakers were adventurers and explorers, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. So what did people do before there were maps? Well, 18 was quite easy to use natural signs like mountains and rivers and followed coastlines. And it was 19 more logical (合理的) to use time, not distance, to measure (计量) journeys: the next village is 20 threehour ride, for example. In fact, in the earliest maps, people didn't draw landmarks. They drew the stars. It was very easy to see the night sky 21 use it for navigation (航行).The sky was a lot clearer before the light pollution from cities 22 we have today. When towns and cities were built, people drew road maps which gave correct distances and directions. The London Underground was opened in 1863 and it also used a road map style. But a man 23 Henry Beck realized that traveling by train wasn't the same as driving your car across London.Passengers only needed to know which stations to change at.His new design (设计) for the Underground map wasn't very 24 with the train companies at first. But the passengers loved it and in 1933, 700,000 copies were printed. These days, of course, you can ride a bike, drive a car or 25 through a forest and know where you are exactly, using a GPS.It's really difficult to get lost! 根据下句“I really like the stamp on the postcard.” 根据“I like it.” 根据下句“Cindy lives at 16 Park Street.” 故选A。 5. 根据下句的“Her house is across … station.” 根据“you can drive a car there”可知,Cindy家附近有个地下停车场。故选D。 7. 根据“Taking a car can cost lots of money.
