As teenagers, most students are trying their best to get into a good high school. But a Canadian teenager named William Gadoury is not interested in this kind of thing. Instead, he has a great interest in Mayan (玛雅人的) culture. Recently, the 15-year-old boy said that he had discovered a lost Mayan city in Mexico.
William lives in Quebec, Canada. He showed great interest in Mayan culture at a young age. Many boys usually like spending their free time playing computer games, but William likes learning about Mayan culture. To his surprise, he noticed that while people from other cultures liked building their cities near the water, Mayans liked building their cities in forests, on mountains, or in other places far away from the water. Why did they make such choices? William wanted to find out the answer. After studying the locations of 117 known Mayan cities, he found out the connection between the cities and the stars: it seems the Mayans built their cities to match different constellations (星座).
William compared the known Mayan cities with 23 constellations. While studying the final constellation, he saw three stars but only two known cities. So he guessed there might be another city that people hadn’t found yet. With the help of the Canadian Space Agency and Google Maps, he finally found a place that he believes is the lost Mayan city. However, not all scientists think so. One scientist says that the so-called “lost Mayan city” is in fact an abandoned corn field that wasn’t used many years ago.

Pandas are loved by people worldwide, yet they were once suffering big challenges. Their natural living environment was destroyed, and it created breeding (繁殖) difficulties for pandas. In the wild, scientists found that female (雌性) pandas only gave birth every 28 months. This led to a slow increase in their numbers. As a result, the panda population was decreasing.
Another challenge facing pandas was reduced bamboo supplies. Pandas depend on bamboo for their diet. The average life span (寿命) of bamboo species is 60 years. However, bamboo flowers and dies. It then takes several years for the bamboo to regrow. Therefore, for only 5 to 8 years, the bamboo can serve as food for pandas. When bamboo dies, pandas must move to other areas. At the beginning, this was not very serious, but with the rise in human population, many forests were cut down to make way for villages and roads. This led to pandas losing their homes and having to move to other places. It was almost impossible for them to find new homes.
So China has taken many measures to protect them. We plan to set up 67 panda reserves by 2025 to provide them with homes. The largest panda reserve (保护区) is the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, which covers an area of 2,000 square kilometers and is home to 149 giant pandas now.

Have you ever heard of e-waste (electronic waste) , which can be produced every day? Old computers, MP4 players and mobile phones can become e-waste. How do you deal with them when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to a survey by the United Nations in 2024, people around the world produced 62 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 13.8 million tons. China was the biggest waster, producing 14 million tons. The U.S. came second, with 7.5 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e- waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban (城市的) mine. Why? The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals (有毒化学物质) can get into the earth or air, influencing the environment and people’s health.

Scientists are also trying to find ways to increase the number of pandas. With these efforts, there is hope now for the future of these magical creatures.

Apple, for example, now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

Does my goldfish know who I am?
I think this is a great question. I do spend my days 61 (study) how fish go about their lives. First of all, fish are much 62 (smart) than people think. People often talk of goldfish having three-second memories, but in fact they can learn all kinds of things, and remember 63 (they) for quite a long time.
This shouldn’t surprise us too much. Just like other animals, they can find enough to eat, and know when it is safe to be out in the open. The ability of learning and 64 (remember) things helps them do this.
Some scientists believe that fish might have special 65 (feel) that help them know their own group members. That is because fish live in 66 very different world from us. 67 seeing is important for many fish, it is not as important as other senses such as smell and touch.
So, does your fish know who you are? I believe your fish will 68 (sure) know when it is feeding time. My own fish become very excited when my hand 69 (appear) near their fishbowl, even before I drop the food in. Your fish may not remember your face, but your personal smell and the sound of your footsteps can remind it 70 you when you walk towards the fishbowl.
