Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha. “Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once. “It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.” “But what happened?” Mary asked, “There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.” Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be. The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying. “Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha. Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help. ”After the words. Martha left the room quickly. When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house, She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here? ” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.” ——Adapted from The Secret Garden 26. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’Neill called him “the true father of American literature”. “Mark Twain is all of our grandfather,” agreed William Faulkner, another Nobel winner. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you will find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical—a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. Most importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of the US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of its old traditions. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical (批评的) points about the culture and the society of the US at the time. That’s why he is so beloved in the US—he wasn’t afraid to express his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad, and he wrote openly about it in a newspaper article in 1900. He also believed strongly in women’s right to vote in elections (选举) and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901. “Tom was a glittering hero once more—the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” Twain wrote in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. But he could just as well have been describing himself. 30. Why are two Nobel winners mentioned at the beginning? A. To show they were as successful as Mark Twain. B. To show their close relationship with Mark Twain. C. To show how American literature developed. D. To show Mark Twain’s influence. 31. What is most special about the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? A. It describes how a young boy grows up. B. It introduces the famous Mississippi River. C. It presents a magical idea of childhood. D. It cleverly makes fun of the US culture. 32. How does the writer show Twain was fearless to voice his opinions? A. By giving a speech. B. By showing numbers. C. By giving examples. D. By using sentences from his book. 33. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? A. Mark Twain was very much like Tom. B. Mark Twain was a hero in American literature. C. Mark Twain should be more confident in himself. D. Mark Twain made a wonderful description of Tom. 【答案】30. D 31. D 32. C 33. It causes seven million deaths a year, making it the largest single environmental health risk. In cities, air pollution is particularly serious. More than 80% of people live in the areas where pollution levels are beyond WHO limits. One well-established way to reduce air pollution is to plant trees, as their leaves catch and absorb harmful particulates (微粒). But planting new trees is not always a good choice for lack of enough space. That’s why the “City Tree”, a mobile tree which removes pollutants from the air, has been becoming popular in cities around the world, including Oslo, Paris, Brussels and Hong Kong. Each City Tree is just under 4 meters tall, nearly 3 meters wide and 2.19 meters deep, acting as a chair or a bench. A screen is included for information or advertising. Berlin-based Green City Organization explains that its invention has the environmental benefit of up to 275 actual trees. But the City Tree isn’t, in fact, a tree at all—it’s a moss culture (青苔培植). “Moss cultures have a much larger leaf surface area than any other plant. That means we can catch more pollutants,” said Zheng liang Wu, co-founder of Green City Organization. The huge surfaces of moss in each tree can remove dust, NO₂ and O₃ gases from the air. It requires very little care: solar panels provide electricity, while rainwater is collected into a container and then sent into the soil. To monitor the health of the moss, the City Tree has sensors (传感器) which measure soil humidity (湿度), temperature and water quality. “We also have pollution sensors inside the trees, which help monitor the local air quality and tell us how efficient the tree is,” Wu said. Its creators say that each City Tree is able to absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter a day and contributes to removing 480 tons of CO2 a year. 34. What is the City Tree? A. It is an ordinary tree growing leavers. B. It is a mobile tree offering electricity. C. It is a mobile tree providing rainwater. D. It is a moss culture absorbing pollutants. 35. Why is the City Tree becoming popular in cities? A. It takes up less space. B. It is very easy to move. C. It requires very little care. D. It can be used for advertisement. 36. What does the City Tree depend on to work? A. Soil and rainwater. B. Solar panels and sensors. C. Temperature and humidity. D. Moss culture and management. 37. Which of the following statements is right according to the text? A. The City Tree needs a lot of care. B. Pollution sensors in the trees can help protect the environment. C. The City Tree has environmental benefits as actual trees. D. Planting new trees is a good choice to fight against air pollution in the city. 【答案】34. D 35. A 36. B 37. (C) Air pollution is one of the world’s invisible killers. 35 Why is the City Tree becoming popular in cities?
